This spring, I started selling young plants at Samstagsmarkt, a local market in our city. My initial intention is to restart a food educational project for kids that my partner and I started 4 years ago. I brought dwarf veg plants such as dwarf tomato/paprika/eggplant plants so that kids can grow them on a balcony or even on a windowsill.
Unlike what I imagined, plants were bought by adults for themselves. Probably it's partially because it was just after the lockdown. Most of the visitors to the market was adults. And the far beyond best seller was Shiso (Japanese summer herb), not the dwarf vegetables. Shiso syrup was well received too. Ja that's business. Full of unexpected things and it's fun 😁
After I finished selling dwarf veg plants, somehow I shifted to the direction "make extra" of mine. I read in a book "business is to share joy, then money follows". I realized that's true based on my own experience.
What I can improve next year is to plan planting cycle more. This year I could roughly got to know what and how much I plant every week or two weeks. Definitely I planted too many tomatoes too early 😅
Last but not least, another good thing was I had plenty of chance to speak in German. It was fun to try to talk my favorite plants. I'm thankful to the curious and kind visitors.
I'll bring cold hardy vegetables next month and take a break. I already started thinking about what to bring next year. It will start from selling seeds.
この春、5月からマーケットで野菜の苗を売り始めました。もともとの目的は、昔お父ちゃんと進めていた食育プロジェクトを復活させるべく、子どもがバルコニーや窓際でも育てられる野菜苗を売ることでしたが・・・・・・プロジェクトって全然予想外の方向に進みますよね😅
子どもが買ってくれるかなと持って行った野菜ですが、5月はまだロックダウン明けで、マーケットに子どもがいなかったこともあってか、大人のお客さんがほとんどでした。さらにベストセラーは紫蘇とうちで採れた紫蘇で作った紫蘇シロップ。
そんな反応に流されてか、いつからか自分のために作る苗を少し余分に作って持って行くようになりました。松浦弥太郎さんの『世界を「仕事場」にするための40の基本』という本に、「仕事は感動を分かち合うこと」という一説があって、これをまさに実感した次第です。
5月から隔週でマーケットに立って、どんなお客さんがいるのか、どんな植物がどのくらい買われるのかがわかり、来年はもう少し計画的に育苗していい売り手になれそうです。
あと、これは当初から少し期待していたことですが、ドイツ語を実際に使ういい機会になりました。自分が好きな植物・園芸という分野のことを話せたのがとても楽しかったです。好奇心旺盛でフレンドリーなお客さんたちに感謝しています。
来月はブロッコリーなど秋栽培のできる野菜の苗を持って行って、そのあとは少しお休みして、クリスマス前にはおにぎりメーカーや箸置きを売って、年明けにまた植物メインで種を持って戻ってこようと思います。
How did your origami Schultüten sell?
It was interesting. People preferred DIY version than those I made by myself ;) It was the same for our former product Mobile Garden.
I think we Germans love diy - even if sometimes the idea of it more than really doing stuff. So perhaps small projects appeal more to people.
That’s right! I was surprised to see there are apartments without kitchen when I was looking for my first one in Germany (in Japan most of the apartments or 100% have kitchen). Ja I’m in DIY nation 😁 I like it!
植物をマーケットに出して売るっていうのはいいですね。雨に濡れても大丈夫。私も30代の頃手作り市やアートマーケットに出店して、当時はデジタルで絵を描いていたからポストカードとか、印画紙プリントとか売っていたのですが通り雨で商品がダメになることがしばしばありました。今は、屋内での展覧会での販売中心になりました。
自分で庭で植える分を少し余分に作って売れるのもいいところです。ただ、雨はOKでも、若い苗は風には弱いことがわかり、風の強い日は屋内で売りたいです :)
