Hive Open Mic, week 53, Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin

Welcome to week 53 of Hive Open Mic, the weekly live music event that gathers more and more participants each week. This week the topic is TOYS.

At first, I thought it would be too difficult to find a suitable composition for this week. Toys ... Also, my hands are still giving a bit strange feeling, so I thought I wouldn't even shoot this week, but it's better than the previous week. I have already played and recorded other compositions in the past few days, so Hive Open Mic entry will not be missing.

Especially, as I wanted to set to this post as 100 % beneficiary account @primalamusica,( former user partitura, you can read here what has happened to him). I feel at least we can show a little bit of gratefulness and encouragement for all the support he showed us, all musicians, during previous months. So all the rewards from this post will go to primalamusica as a small sign of support. When he performs a composition, a huge smile can be seen on his face. So joyful and happy musical moments...my entry had to be something cheerful.

The composition I have chosen to play is Maple Leaf Rag, composed by Scott Joplin. His music is used so many times and in so many ways. I remember as a child I listened to his tunes from games, music toys, tv or radio. When I started to play the piano in music school, in my second year I played his other famous composition, The Entertainer, of course in an easy arrangement. I liked it so much and remember playing it at a school year closing concert.
Here come the first two parts of Maple Leaf Rag, as usually, those rags have more parts. Sorry for the bad quality of the video, I recorded it this evening, with no daylight, I know it is not the best, but the day was so busy.

This reminds me a lot of the black and white silent movies with a slightly funny twist. Awesome work bropiano! Doesn't seem to be any problem with your on screen performance to me! Love how you can just start playing before you've even fully turned around to face the piano! Yes, I played it twice 😃

Yes, definitely the silent movies comes to the mind while listening to Scott Joplin's rags. Hahah, I didn't notice that I started immediately after just turning to the piano. Ready, steady (it is while I introduce the video) play :D

Thanks for listening 🎧 😃

I'm still a bit in and out of Hive, so I only just now saw (and listened to) your post.
Thanks for the generous gesture of setting me as beneficiary of this post! All the more motivation to carry on and hopefully perhaps one day I'm able again to support the music community on Hive like I used to do.
THanks!
O, and I like your choice of this rag time: I never played the Entertainer, but this one I've played really a lot. In that time I had really nimble fingers and played this one as fast as I could. Inspiration was a recording I once heard of this piece by Marielle & Katia Labeque, a wonderful performance of breathtaking pianistic splendor. Needless to say I nver reached thát level....

With a bit of googling I found that recording on youtube:

A dazzling transcription for two piano's only playable for super human pianists, but hey, it's the reason I started to play Scott Joplin... :-)

Omg, they are crazy aliens 🤣🤣🤣 not anymore can be called humans...
@primalamusica , are you suggesting unconsciously that the 4 hands, or two piano project will be something like this? 😳😇

Well, maybe in 100, 150 years, when I've practised enough.... 🤪

We should start then to study 🎹.

Now!

🤣

This brings me back to Banjo Kazooie. As one of the protagonists is a bear who knows to play the banjo there's a lot of rags and bluegrass in the music of the game. And it sound wonderful. Looking at you playing it so well it's just great.

I still find myself in awe to watch play, my dear Gabriela. There's a lot of poise kept in such happy and enticing music. While playing this, it must be difficult to fend off the need to step and dance. That on itself is a hard thing to control. The fingers are show their usual dexterity and grace. Tempo is kept with the usual changes in rags and that type of music and I think I see some hints of rubato in your playing. Maybe I just worked a lot today and started to see things.

Great choice and I commend your initiative to give the earnings of this post to @primalamusica. He is one of those steady supporters for all musicians in this site.

You just worked too hard, so you see things 🤣😜 I hope I didn't use rubato here, would be out of character, but maybe I did it, unintentionally :D

Thank you for you always detailed rewievs of my playing @bertrayo 🙌

Ha, ha, ha. That was my impression 😝

You're welcome. Good to see you playing, @mipiano

You never cease to amaze me with every piece you play on the piano, seriously your skill is very good, I really like it hahahaha it's fun to listen to you and watch your videos! On the other hand it is really sad what happened with score :'( I think hive should do something about it so that these things stop happening, it is not fair that it starts to happen the same thing that happened in steemit some time ago with several accounts that were stolen, how could we support each other and take care of this? I will tell a friend of mine who works with ocd to see if this issue can be discussed in a discord meeting. @mipiano

His case couldn't be solved, they tried to help but it was not possible afterwards. He will maybe explain one day what happened, when the emotional impact calms down a bit.

I am glad you liked my playing, it is a cool piece heheh 🎹😎

You're soo good! 💯 Sounds beautiful!
I really wish I could learn to play with notations like that. I'm super slow when it comes to reading notes and playing simultaneously. 😅

Thank you @nithwit

Reading from the music notation is a thing of persistence. I have students that struggle with the reading and usually they rely on sound more than can see through written patterns. There are those who reads well, as first they try to read, and then match the written notes with the sound through the hearing.

If you need and want to be faster reader, then try to practice it every day a bit. But don't learn it by heart hehehe, read! :D

Wow!! Me ha gustado muchísimo, muy bonita interpretación, bravo 👏👏👏👏👏

Your playing is as excellent as ever. Yes, I think I recognize this song from a little music box that my mom used to have for jewelry, or something like that. Thank you. And wow, I admire you for dedicating the rewards of this post to our fellow musician, @primalamusica. I had no idea of his story until you mentioned it, but I did notice the new name in his entry this week. Wow. I appreciate the way you look after your musician family like this, sister.

Thank you Cabe, this is just a small detail, he used to support many of the musicians. And the piece, so cheerful, right? Playing the Scott Joplin rags is such a fun :)
