Playing with memories
Sitting comfortably in my armchair, listening to Richard Clayderman's piano rendition of Ballad for Adelina and sipping my cup of coffee, I began the process of introspection necessary to delve into the late 1950s and early 1960s. Those wonderful years of my childhood, when buying toys was not the best option.
My siblings and I, like other neighbourhood children, had no choice but to make our own toys. Not only did we make colourful kites dressed in plastic paper from dry cleaners, but the list of what we made is long.
Making our own spinning tops was not something new, unlike the tirachapas (cap pullers), resorteras (slingshots, Chinese slingshots or fondas). We built boats out of zinc cans, other boats out of wood to which we attached paddles, and with a rubber band (a rolled-up red elastic band) we made them sail in the water barrel or in the bathtub. We also made paper boats (when we didn't know it was origami).
This was Venezuela
We made gurrufíos (zumbador or run run), a disc with two concentric holes through which we threaded a wick (string) and spun them. At first, we made some gurrufíos with buttons (the biggest ones we could find), and later we made them with soda bottle caps. I clearly remember making one with the removable lid (easy to open) from a butter tin, perhaps seven centimetres in diameter. We usually painted them in colours that disappeared or mixed when we spun them (magic).
Pinwheel
With the gurrufíos, I remember that the girls did something similar, the rehiletes (windmills), a toy consisting of a wooden stick with a windmill blade made of paper or cardboard stuck on top, painted in a multitude of bright colours.

We built wooden carts with discarded metal roller bearings and used them on concrete streets or on the main street, which was generally not as busy as it is now. We also ran after bicycle wheels or the hoops from baby playpens, which we propelled with a thick wire bent into a kind of fork.

Immersed in my childhood memories, when I was about eight or nine years old, images come to mind of our single-seater aeroplanes made of wood or paper. Likewise, I suddenly remembered that we used to make a kind of cart with a spool of thread, which in those days was made of wood. The reel was pierced by a rubber band (yellow tie), held at one end, and at the other end, a small piece of sail. At the end of the rubber band, we placed a lollipop stick or longer wooden sticks. We spun it around many times, placed it on the floor, and it started to move.

We made our own telephones with string or twine. We put a small plastic cup on both ends of the string, inserted the string through a small hole in the bottom of the cup and tied it. That's it, we could now communicate over a distance of about three or four metres, heh, heh, heh. We also used a string to make our own cable cars, from which we hung a rectangular sardine tin. We often used these cable cars to exchange sweets.

Dad spent his free time building the house, so we had washed sand and dust or yellow sand in the yard. My brothers and I were real builders. We made our lorries out of oval sardine tins, and other machines such as cranes, tower cranes or T-cranes, compactors, bulldozers and traillas. We built a city on the sand where the machines did their work.

Other simpler games, but no less important, were puzzles. There was one we did with two nails, which we had to separate with a certain movement. We made hooks out of wire which, like the nails, had to be separated with certain movements. As I write, I remember that with a plastic or wooden ruler, which had three holes, we would thread a string through it, which hung at both ends. A washer or ring was placed on one of those loops, and the idea was to pass it to the other side without untying the string. Here is a small drawing that will give you an idea.
Play Kiss
Now, there are games that entertained us a lot, but that were bought, such as chess, Chinese checkers, Chinese sticks, Scrabble, Monopoly, spinning tops, and marbles. We played hangman, old woman, tic-tac-toe, stop... I think that kids today don't know and have no idea about many of the games I've mentioned. Those toys remain in my memories, beautiful moments from our childhood.

Jugando con los recuerdos
Sentado cómodamente en la poltrona, escuchando una Balada para Adelina, interpretada en el piano por Richard Clayderman y con mi taza de café, inicié el proceso de introspección necesario para adentrarme a finales de la década de 1950 e inicio de los 60. Aquellos años maravillosos de mi infancia, donde comprar juguetes, pues no era la mejor opción.
Mis hermanos y yo, al igual que otros niños vecinos, no nos quedó de otra que fabricar nuestros propios instrumentos lúdicos. No solo hacíamos los papagayos en vistosos colores vestidos con papel plástico procedente de las tintorerías, la lista de lo que hacíamos es larga.
Hacer nuestras propias perinolas no era algo novedoso, como lo fueron los tirachapas (tira tapas), las resorteras (elásticas, chinas o fondas). Construimos embarcaciones con lata de zinc, otras embarcaciones en madera a las cuales les poníamos chapaletas y con una elástica (liga roja enrollada) los hacíamos navegar en el pipote con agua o en la bañera. También hacíamos los barquitos de papel (cuando eso no sabíamos que era origami).
Así era Venezuela
Los gurrufíos (zumbador o run run), ese disco al que le atravesábamos por dos orificios concéntricos, un pabilo (cuerda) y lo hacíamos girar. Algunos gurrufíos al principio los hacíamos con botones (los más grandes que conseguíamos), posteriormente los hacíamos con chapas de refresco y recuerdo claramente que llegué a hacer uno con la tapa desprendible (abre fácil) de la lata de mantequilla, quizá unos siete centímetros de diámetro. Por lo general, los pintábamos de colores que desaparecían o se mezclaban cuando los hacíamos girar (magia).
Rehilete
Con los gurrufíos, recuerdo que las chicas hacían algo parecido, los rehiletes (molinillo), un juguete compuesto por una varita de madera a la que se le clava, en la parte superior, una figura de aspas de molinillo construida con papel o cartulina, se pintaban con multitud de colores llamativos.
Las de no sotros no eran tan elaboiradas como estas y ni usábamos casco Radio Otilca
Las carruchas de madera con ruedas de rolineras metálicas desechadas, las construíamos y usábamos en alguna calle de cemento o en la calle principal que por lo general no eran transitadas como ahora. Igual, corríamos detrás de unos rines de bicicleta o ese aro de los corrales de bebé, los cuales impulsábamos con un alambre grueso al que se le hacía una especie de horqueta.
Mundo Deportivo
Sumergido en mis recuerdos de infancia, con unos ocho o nueve años, vienen las imágenes de nuestros aviones monoplazas construidos en madera o de papel. Asimismo, como flash, recordé que, con un carrete de hilo, que en aquellos tiempos era de madera, hacíamos una especie de carrito. El carrete era atravesado por una liga (tirante amarillo), se sujetaba por un extremo, por el otro, un pequeño trozo de vela y en ese extremo sobresaliente de la liga, poníamos un palito de chupeta o unos más largos de madera. Le dábamos muchas vueltas y lo poníamos sobre el piso y echaba a andar.
Brainli Lat.
Con pabilo o cordel, hacíamos nuestros propios teléfonos. A ambos extremos del cordel poníamos un vasito plástico, introducíamos el cordel por un pequeño orificio en el fondo del vasito y lo anudábamos. Listo, ya nos comunicábamos a la distancia, unos tres o cuatro metros, je, je, je. Con el cordel también hicimos nuestros propios teleféricos en donde colgábamos una lata de sardina rectangular. Muchas veces usamos esos teleféricos para intercambiar golosinas.
Alcozar
Papá, en su tiempo libre iba construyendo la casa, así que en el patio teníamos arena lavada y polvillo o arena amarilla. Mis hermanos y yo éramos verdaderos constructores. Hicimos con latas ovaladas de sardinas, nuestros camiones de carga, y otras máquinas como grúas, grúas torre o T, compactadoras, bulldóceres, traillas. Sobre la arena hacíamos la ciudad donde las máquinas hacían su trabajo.

Otros juegos más sencillos, no por ello menos importantes, fueron los rompecabezas. Había uno que lo hacíamos con dos clavos, los cuales debíamos separar con cierto movimiento. Con alambre hicimos unos ganchos que, al igual que los clavos, deben separarse con ciertos movimientos. Mientras escribo, recordé que con una regla plástica o de madera, la cual tenía tres orificios, se hacía pasar un cordel, el cual colgaba a ambos extremos, en una de esas ondas se ponía una arandelita o anillo y la idea era pasarlo al otro lado sin desamarrar la cuerda. Les muestro un pequeño dibujo que les dará una idea.
Juegos Besa
Ahora, hay juegos que nos entretuvieron mucho, pero que fueron comprados, como el ajedrez, las damas chinas, palitos chinos, Scrabble, monopolio, trompo y metras. Jugamos al ahorcado, a la vieja, al punto y ralla, al stop… Creo que los chicos de ahora no conocen ni tienen idea de muchos de los juegos que he mencionado. Esos juguetes permanecen en mis recuerdos, hermosos momentos de nuestra niñez.
