Why is it that we grow old and still feel young?

in Silver Bloggers3 years ago

This has long been a fascinating enigma for me, one of life's mysteries that I have intermittently dwelled upon over the years. I chat with the older age group about this concept because growing older and feeling young intrigues me.

But despite still feeling like that 20 year old, the mirror image of wrinkles and bronze silver hair clearly tells me that my body is growing older. I absolutely fit into the #silverbloggers community and proudly so.

I am also an example of opposites, what I call one of the dualities of life.

Is the feeling of youthfulness the reason why sick senior aged parents resists complete dependence on their families, living in aged care facilities and immobility? I know that no older person willingly agrees to leave their homes to be cared for, to be reliant on others, to hang their self-worth at the door of their one room bedrooms.

The first time I heard about this duality of getting older and still feeling youthful came from my mother, who had just turned 83. A couple of years before she passed, she explained her health problems and slowing down, to her body wearing out. It was a matter of fact. My darling mother was a wise old owl who kept all her mental faculties, humour, love and kindness till the end.

Over the years I have talked to many middle aged and senior aged people about how they feel as opposed to how they physically look. They all feel youthful. I see their eyes light up, smiles fill their faces as they happily chat away.

As we grow older may we all continue to think and act young no matter what life throws us. It is a tough one when the body gets old and sick. We need fortitude, wisdom and strength of character to accept. And for wonderful loving and kind families who are caring for bed-ridden aged parents I take my hat off to you all.

Thank you for your touching post from 4 days ago dear kind @lizelle, When Life Starts Fading. Your words have been great motivator for my post.

Regards to you all.

It seems fitting to finish this post with a bird loving flowering shrub from my garden. How the birds and bees love this flowering shrub. The beauty is a fabulous example of the magical power of mother nature, it is so perfectly beautiful to look at as well as a source of food the insects and bird visitors to my place. And may I never stop loving flowers.

I'm so glad you enjoyed that blog, but so true when one still feels young in the heart, mind and soul but look in the mirror and see that time has indeed had an affect!

Yes and I think it happens for everyone. It would be nice to age well and stay forever young in heart and soul.

Still feeling young when your older is really a wonderful thing wish all could feel that way till the end like your blessed mother, my mum is the same way and she is 86 years old and still has that great sense of humor and still goes for her walks God bless her.

I send blessings to your lovely mother @kohsamui99, she sounds like a wonderful lady.
I think the secret to a long healthy life is a happy attitude among other attributes of course. 🌻

Than you @angiemitchell she is and i will pass that on from you 😊

Your right happy attitude, good food and lots of laughs 😊

True: "no older person willingly agrees to leave their homes to be cared for, to be reliant on others, to hang their self-worth at the door of their one room bedrooms" at care facilities. We treasure our mobility, independence, self-sufficiency. How hard we worked for that from infancy to crawling to toddling and walking. Childhood is all about asserting the self and testing boundaries. Then in our old age we are back to walkers and other people setting rules and limitations "for our own good," just as it was for toddlers, whose parents constantly work to keep the little one from injury or death.... you are so right about feeling young inside our gray-haired bodies. The spirit is forever - the body, disposable. May the child inside us never grow jaded and old!

May we toast to this @carolkean and may we always live life to the fullest no matter what. Our journey is an amazing one from babyhood to senior years, we live it the best way we can guided by our conscious, values, beliefs and more importantly our intuitions. Imagine the conversations if we had lots of like minded hive friends around a table.

I think this is one of life's perpetual conundrums. Where we live, we are fortunate to be part of a community of young oldies. I don't believe there is one of us who feels older than 36. I don't choose 20 because I'd not discovered life then. That said, give me a chance to go back there, now, and, boy, the world would not know what hit it!!

I'm determined to wear that purple hat. As a matter of fact, I have. And still do! There's a photo somewhere on the blockchain, too!

How wonderful - a purple hat. I love these kinds of this is me statements. Yes, live the life that feels right and keep radiating that lovely you as you continue to be 36. How I love the zest of life as well.

I bought a special blue hat covered with all sorts of wonderful trinkets, flowers and ribbons at the Noosa Markets many years ago. I wore it until it fell to bits. I miss that hat!💜

Thank you, my friend. We all get there and @lizelle wrote drew such a poignant picture of life a few days back, it was heartbreaking and very illuminating all in the same breath.

Thank you, because, what you say is true and again, we are all getting there. I just hope to age gracefully as I ski down that mountaintop! Love you!!

❤️

Hahaha, and to also gracefully flow through everyday grabbing every opportunity to laugh, love and to sit on a bar stool whenever the opportunity arises. Love you Denise 💗🦄
