Something lost is restored

in Silver Bloggers2 years ago

It was around ten years ago that I first started to notice that my hearing was decreasing,

which was quickly followed by tinnitus (Ringing in the ears). The tinnitus was in my left ear primarily, as was the hearing loss.

As a medical professional, I quickly discovered that these symptoms specifically could be caused by an acoustic neuroma which is a tumor near the inner ear.

I discussed this with my primary care physician, and we decided to do an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

Fortunately, the MRI was negative for the tumor. I had come to accept my symptoms as simply getting older.

I had frequently thought about hearing aid devices, but I just did not find anything that worked well with using my stethoscope.

I also was not thrilled about having the hearing aid and the issues with nightly cleaning and charging or frequent battery changes. Not to mention just having the hearing aid and people seeing that I am getting older. (A bit of vanity on my part).

Well, things changed about six months ago when I experienced my very first vertigo event.

This happened while I was at work. I could not walk without holding onto something. I started looking quite pale as one of my patients expressed concern for me. This vertigo was quickly followed by vomiting. My nurse was concerned that I was having a cardiac event. Fortunately, I was working that day with my primary care physician, and he initiated care for me.

After this event, I had no further episodes until around two months ago, when they started happening more frequently than I liked. I started on traditional medications, and they helped, but I went to see a friend of mine who is an Otolaryngologist (ENT), and he diagnosed me with Meniere's disease.

I was put on yet another medication to take daily, and so far, it seems to help.

I also saw an audiologist who tested and confirmed my left ear was at about 20% hearing.

I spent more time researching new technology that would fit into my life more efficiently, and I discovered the Phonak Lyric.

This is a game changer. I was fitted for the device, and immediately, I heard sounds in my left ear. As a bonus, it has masked my tinnitus as well.

I am excited about this new device. I just got it, so I will write a follow-up in a month to report how it works.

Oh dear friend. This is truly a bonus to what's to come. Age may be the cause of these medical challenges, but proper medication and God factor will definitely restore these loss features to their normalcy.
Thank God for the hearing device.
Have a great day.

Thanks, Lisa.
Yeah, the vertigo is not very much fun.
I had pretty much become accustomed to hearing loss and tinnitus. This new device is making a significant difference.

!CTP

You're welcome, John! Very good that you're getting handled earlier than not.
My Dad waited way too long and now even with the hearing aids he struggles.
Especially when he is in a group. It's not as much the volume but the lack of clarity.
His are Phonak too. I had to plug in his charger last night so I saw the name on them.
He has an app on his phone to adjust them.

Oh wow that must have been quite a scary moment. I can emphasize because I had one occasion where I had vertigo before my ear started to hurt. The hurting started about an hour before I could see my doctor. I remember how scary it was..

If this happens more often, like in your case, I would have been very uncomfortable to leave the house. I'm glad you seem to have found something that's helping you with this and seems to help with the tinnitus too. Take care! I hope it will be better from here!

!CTP

Thanks for the comment, @thisismylife
I appreciate your concern.
So far, things seem to have improved.

Glad you found a solution. I never heard of Phonax Lyric before but I will keep it in mind in case I need it. Thanks for sharing.

I did quite a bit of research, Bob, as I needed something that would not interfere with my stethoscope. So far, the Lyric is working well.
