"How great to have power!" - My resourceful mother is not powerless when storms kill the electricity

in Silver Bloggers3 years ago

Gardening, cooking, canning: I gave up trying years ago,

but Mom is going strong even when faced with a power outage in the midst of canning tomatoes. So I am purloining her stories and photos to share here, to celebrate Mom the Pioneer.

"Such a lot going on here,"

she posted on social media.

"Bad storm Tuesday broke tree off and light pole. "

I had tomatoes in jars to can and no power. So I got twigs and a few dry boards in barn and made a fire in Weber grill and got them done.

"Today REC was here over 2 hours and got new pole in and wires back,

How great to have power again,

Then the tree crew came and cleaned up the branches in no time with a big claw machine. I have pictures on Kindle but won't let me put them on here. Will try tomorrow. Lots of corn went flat too.

No power = NO RUNNING WATER for rural well owners.

Mom, you left out the part where you salvaged water from the dehumidifier for the kettle where you boil the jars to can tomatoes. #Resourceful #Enterprising #Undaunted

Up next: APPLES - she will be peeling, slicing, freezing (or dehydrating) hundreds of 'em, and I need to get myself up there soon to help out. (Photo taken last year by my sister

Here she is in 2016 in another photo taken by the same sister:

And in 2015 (Dad is sitting on one of her quilts) with my sister Lori--and Mom looking hale and hearty:

Mom is 84 now but you'd never know it.

She seems barely a day older than me.

Never in my life have I attempted to can tomatoes or anything else. What a schlub!

Glad to see that your mother is so resourceful. When life gives you lemons, make lemmonade.

"Crisis" also means "opportunity," in Japanese... and to our Depression era grandparents and parents. Thanks for reading and commenting. :)

She does not look 84 and I love her attitude - nothing can stop her!!
And that she's on social media - just LOVE!!

LOL -

I love how you formatted this!!

(Sooo tempted to steal it.) :)

Mom and sister Lori are on social media, but Dad and two other sisters fiercely guard their privacy, so I almost never name them or say much about them.

Mom's forays into social media are fraught with techno glitches and typos. She doesn't use punctuation or capital letters, half the time. A perk of old age? She just doesn't care! And as long as we can read and comprehend her message, so be it.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Wow @carolkean, your Mom certainly is on the ball, just wonderful!
Silver-Blond Lizzie 👌

Thanks Lizzie!
I'm trying to find the post that tells us how to acquire a handle such as @owasco's clever and apt "Silver Dish." I was thinking "Hi-Ho Silver" or if that's taken, @silberstein (probably taken), in which case, silverstone.... thanks!

I believe @tarazkp already has hi ho silver, not sure.

thanks for the compliment!

All you have to do is comment here, as you have done.

I don't get silberstein.

Silberstein is German for Silver Stone.... Silver Stone, maybe?
Thanks!

All cool..😁

Now I know why you don't grow many veggies - your mother grows them for you.

I love your mother.

Next time she needs water, remind her that the water heater is full of it. Some prepper told me that...
