Rainy Afternoons

What’s your favourite way to spend a rainy afternoon?

Rainy days started right with a hot bowl of oatmeal or grits. Coffee is a given. But something about cold wet weather demands something warm in your stomach before you do anything else.

By afternoon I'm in my recliner. Blanket over me with my laptop. Big bay window in the living room letting me watch the rain come down while I scroll through blogs on Hive, reading, and commenting. Maybe writing something if the brain cooperates. That's the ideal afternoon anyway.

Reality is usually different. By afternoon my body has usually given out. So it becomes study time if I can push through. Nap time if I can't. The recliner works for both very well.

The TV stays on in the background with news or history stuff on mostly. Just noise to fill the silence without demanding my attention. Wife is usually nearby doing the same thing. Looking up recipes on her phone or napping herself. We don't have to be doing something together to be together. Just existing in the same room is enough.

The dogs have it figured out better than any of us. They curl up and sleep through the whole thing. No guilt about being unproductive. No internal debate about whether they should be doing something. Just warm, dry, and unconscious until the rain stops.

I want to come back as my dog when I die. They've got it all figured out.

Rainy afternoons are for slowing down. The world outside is gray and miserable and nobody expects anything from you. Might as well lean into it.

What about you? How do you spend rainy afternoons?

For me, rainy weather is about doing something around the house. Cleaning, organizing, purging, something. I am an on-the-go person, and I need to be active throughout the waking hours. If it's a rainy day then I like to just get to the normal house stuff that is there regardless, as a way to pass the time. Granted, it's different having young kids in the house. I don't know the last time I spent an hour sitting down with anything LOL

oh, I get that. The young ones keep you on your toes and moving continuously for sure. Remember those days well. Enjoy the time my friend, they will be gone and you will slow down before you know it.

What a calm, beautiful post that's as much about love as anything else. It's so lovely your wife is home and the two of you are content in your own bubble. Vive la recliner. In this weather, it's the hammock for me. If Jamie settles for that long it's lovely, but he comes to check on me and chat and to see if I need anything in between building bikes, fixing a neighbours clutch, cleaning gutters and the like.

That is awesome he is still able to do those things. So jealous here. I get out and piddle in the yard occasionally. But with my physical challenges, I am limited to what and how long. Yes, we are pretty content being in our own bubbles, as long as we are together.

I used to take naps on weekends in the afternoon, but I haven't really had the chance to do that lately. My wife still takes hers, but I have found myself either watching TV, reading, or playing around on HIVE until she wakes up.

For rainy afternoons, all three of those things you mentioned are good to go I think.

I want to curl up under the blanket on a rainy afternoon as well. Or maybe drink a coffee with toasted bread 😁.

A blanket and coffee is primo!
