World Turbulence and Crypto: Returning to Some Old Assumptions

in Silver Bloggers4 years ago

I remember when I first joined this gig — in fact, in my very introductory post — I quite clearly stated that I expected the whole thing to "go nowhere" and become "worth nothing."

In time, of course, I was proven wrong about that — and I am definitely grateful for that!

At the same time, the wild gyrations resulting from the past few weeks' activity — culminating with the Russia/Ukraine conflict — have served me as a poignant reminder that most things (even ideas and concepts) we surround ourselves with are incredibly fragile.

I pondered, for a moment, that our own Hive token was trading around $1.64 on January 4th, and by January 24th — just three weeks later — it was $0.74. All because someone said "inflation is coming!"

Now, someone has said "the Russians are coming!" and things are suddenly all over the map again.

No, I am certainly not about to turn my back on the cryptosphere, but I am shaking myself loose from having in any way fallen into a pattern where I think about anything crypto as more than merely POTENTIAL.

There's nothing here that can be counted on.

If I have $10,000 saved up, and three weeks later it's worth $4,500, it cannot in any even remote or imaginary fashion be counted on.

No, I'm certainly not dismissing the future potential of Hive, LeoFinance and cryptocurrency in general. I am just reminding myself that this is a very cool movement to be part of... but I need to get back on the page of having zero expectations that this will "become something" in the long run, or "have any value whatsoever."

"Value" is, after all, just an abstract concept, right?

A banana has value when I am hungry, but no value when I need a blanket to keep warm. Neither "Dollars" nor "Hive" are actual things.

I can walk into a bank with my piece of paper that has the number "100" on it and say "I'd like 100 Dollars/Euros, please" but neither "Dollars" nor "Euros" nor "Hive" are actually things. They are just concepts. Agreements. If you doubt that, try handing one of those pieces of paper to a rural farmer in Peru who has never seen anything but Peruvian Sols in his entire life.

Anyway, the last few weeks have been a poignant reminder that I live in a concrete and tangible world where I have to be able to rely my ability to buy a loaf of bread or pay my property taxes with certainty and the Cryptosphere needs to be moved to a different space in my reality where it remains an awesome idea that may pave the way to a future of abundance... but it's not something that can be even remotely relied upon.

So, basically continuing to do the same thing as before, just reassigning priorities.

Lately, spending more time on putting things for sale on eBay, and marketing actual tangible things people need... or perceive they need. But still finding some time to blog, here!

Thanks for stopping by!

For me, its more about what can be done with crypto and the networks of good folks that I build around my blogging here. At the moment, I am focused on the arena because I am looking for alternatives to what we have now that isn't doing us much good.
Any system that allows currency investment opens itself to speculation and to the the swings and roundabouts of political and economic will. Whatever happens in the big wide world that affects the dollar, euro or whatever folks are using will fluctuate wildly as events unfold.

Building community, developing personal skills and sharing with others is what will get us through in the long run, not strings of numbers or code.

I very much enjoy the sense of community here, and the people I have met along the way have been interesting and awesome... which is also why I definitely plan to continue participating and plugging along!

And yes, people definitely have more value than code, in the long run!

There's nothing here that can be counted on.

I feel that's pretty much true of life. In terms of currencies, the rouble is taking a hit and we've been told in the UK to "expect hard times". Reading the reports from Russia, businesses are going bankrupt overnight and people are losing their jobs. The disruption in Ukraine must be massive, even where there is no direct conflict.

Similar things happened here through the pandemic and following the 2008 crash. The house next door to me was being developed then and was abandoned for the next ten years. Work has only just begun on it in the past few weeks.

The social contract that existed in the 1970s has long gone, along with jobs for life (a concept that always terrified me at the time) or, even, "jobs", and health is a major issue for individuals, families and communities. I don't even know where to start with climate change.

That doesn't mean that we can't be prepared and have some skills, knowledge and contacts that will help us, along with a degree of flexibility.

Well, yes... it is pretty much true of life, as a whole. I have always been someone who has sought out oases of stability, but such an idea seems more and more obsolete in the current world. Seems like we all need to be prepared to be both destitute and wealthy, multiple times, all within the same year.

I recognize it as the reality of things, but I still don't like it, even one tiny bit.

Just as you have said, anything we need have value just when we need it, the market price has not been cool anyway, therefore, one doesn't has to put all of his into one basket, because it might turn out not to be a good decision at times.
Taking everything into consideration, I still believe hive matters, but the world itself is a dynamic world, one need to strive in many dimensions.

Well, I absolutely agree that Hive matters, and that this will continue to be an interesting and valid project for many years to come. But I am also preparing myself for the possibility that one day I may arrive here and discover that it all has zero value. That doesn't take away from my desire to be here and participate, it merely removes any expectation that I can count on something being here.

You are right

Hi, @denmarkguy
An excellent reflection to invite you in this post, the uncertainty that is embracing us very strongly at the moment, but life is a constant change, the challenge is to assume it and not let it fall and currencies always grow and decrease in the stock market world It has been like this and cryptocurrencies do not escape this reality, the important thing is to do what you do because you like it and enjoy it, well this is my case as a blogger in Hive.

And I definitely will continue blogging here because I very much enjoy the community and the interaction!

Nice photography and beautiful flower

Thank you.
