It's completely different for us than it was for our parents.
Every generation looks back at their childhood and realizes how much the world has changed. But as parents today, when we look back at how we were raised versus how we are raising our own children, the contrast is stark. Life has transitioned from an era of beautiful simplicity to one of high stakes, meticulous planning, and deep emotional involvement.
When we were kids, our parents didn't have to stress over the endless variables we face today. Life was straightforward, predictable, and remarkably uncomplicated. I distinctly remember the milestone of going away to college. Back then, wearing a full pant was a rite of passage - a dream we eagerly anticipated because it was a luxury reserved strictly for college-bound adults. When the time came, all my father had to worry about was getting me two pairs of full pants and shirts. That was it. He took me to the college hostel, paid a nominal fee that literally amounted to just a few hundred rupees, handed me over, and left. There was no overthinking, no endless checklists, and no anxiety about whether I would "fit in" or have the right aesthetic. Life was simple, and we just figured it out as we went.
Fast Forward to Today: contrast that with our reality as parents today - recently, we reached a major milestone in our family: preparing our son for his journey to IIM Kozhikode (IIMK). The sheer scale of preparation today is on a completely different level. Instead of just dropping him off with a trunk and a couple of shirts, we embarked on a multi-day family shopping mission.
In a competitive, professional environment like a top-tier B-school, presentation matters. Instead of leaving him to struggle alone in a new city deciding what to wear, we wanted to ensure his transition was as smooth and seamless as possible. As a family, we turned it into a collaborative project. We spent days debating what would look good on him, choosing the right fits, and ensuring he felt confident. We ended up selecting a couple of sharp business suits - an absolute necessity for an MBA student, alongside a curated collection of formal and casual wear.
Sure, he will buy plenty of things on his own as he grows into his independent life, but providing that solid, polished foundation was our way of saying, "We've got your back."

Beautifully expressed! Childhood was simpler, with fewer worries and more freedom. Today we plan everything for our children, but sometimes that simplicity is what we miss the most.
I don't have kids, but it is definitely a lot harder. The things they have to navigate and deal with would have left our heads spinning as kids. Sadly many parents choose to be their kids friend instead of being a role model and having boundaries.

I went to boarding school when I was 10 hundreds of miles and a plane ride away from my parents. It was brilliant though and I grew up fast lol! The boy is growing up too and looking dapper in those threads!
