Collared aracari

in Feathered Friends4 years ago (edited)

If you love birds you should really go to Ecuador. In Ecuador live over 1.600 species of birds. That's more different species that live in Europe. ALso the the variety is amazing! During our holiday roundtrip we've seen hummingbirds, albatrosses, condors, parrots and many more.

These photo's were taken in the Mindo Nambillo reserve west of Ecuadors capital Quito.

We spent a few days in a Haciënda in the cloudforest were we've seen a lot of different birds. Most of them I had only seen in the zoo.

One of the birds that impressed me were the Collared Aracaris. These tucans have a remarkable large beak and a nice combination of colours.
The birds were lured by bananas so I could take some nice shots of them.

A very interesting and unusual bird for me. Judging by the beak, does it eat fruit?

They surely are interesting. As I mentioned in the blog that were lured with ripe bananas but they do eat other things according to Wikipedia:

This species is primarily an arboreal fruit-eater, but will also take insects, lizards, eggs, and other small prey.
