We've got this Gigantic Nest we see each week when we drive past to the local town. It's on top of a powerline pole near the swamp lake.
It's been empty since we moved in last fall (or at least every time we drive by). Now this weekend, there was something in it. Whether it was the resident or not, I couldn't tell. By the time I got home, got camera and went back, it was gone. I hung around for half an hour waiting to see if it would come back, but nope.
Any ideas what made this nest and may live here? It's got to be like 3 feet across. I'm thinking (hoping!) an Osprey perhaps, or maybe a Stork, Heron or other? I can't wait to get some photos of whatever it is.

I agree with Mike. Looks like an osprey nest and on the Eastern Seaboard, they build lots of platforms like this for them to nest.
Most of the ones I see are on the Eastern Shore of Virginia right now... almost time for those babies!
Here's hoping! It's about 20 minute drive away, so I can generally only get over that way on the weekends. Guess I'll be making another trip next Saturday if the weather permits!
They are pretty common sight here along the water, where the other house is. They have a mass one right at the ferry that goes over to Cape May, New Jersey. They also had one at the ferry in Orient Point New York that went over to Connecticut. I'm thinking the constant in and out of boats stirred up they're feeding trough. They're Fun Bunch to watch especially after the young start hatching.
Osprey nest.. they winter in central and south america..
Oh, that would be great. Fingers crossed.
