Another nest robber landed today.

Another Harrier Hawk that is, and this time round I won the fight to scare it away. It is not a juvenile like the previous one, but an adult and they all eat baby birds.
020.JPG

The white Acacia tree thorns cannot deter these birds, as they simply ignore the pricks of the thorns.

In a previous post I have shown you the successful raid of a sparrow nest by a juvenile harrier hawk and you can have a look at the post HERE

Now in the new spring season, one has to keep an eye out on the nests at our place, as the raiders are plenty.

Burrowing down to have a look if there was any life in a nest.
031.JPG

I rushed out of our gate to the neighbors sidewalk next door.
035.JPG

Hey, hey, hey, "voetsek" you bugger! I shouted at the top of my voice as I approached the tree and he looked at me. Luckily I have a voice as loud as a ships horn and the hawk was not deaf. Oh, and "voetsek" is the Afrikaans word for scram.
058.JPG

The hawk worked himself up carefully through the thorns.
066.JPG

At last, at the top of the tree with wings flapping open.
079.JPG

And then we had a lift off. Sadly, he dived sharply to the left behind another tree next to this one and the leaves of the other tree were too dense for me to get a shot of him in flight.
087.JPG

So now that hawk knows me and I heard all of the little sparrow and weaver parents cheering and clapping their hands, (wings) for me. I think that they will now start to call me the Hawk Buster, instead of the Ghost Buster :)

The one little male Cape Sparrow even brought me his idea of a flower as a medal for my bravery :)

And like I always say, such is life. We are thankful that there was no killing to witness again, as even as we are used to it in nature, it is still not a pleasant sight. So I will rather walk around screaming in the road than to see the predators killing little lives. I think that you can sense my happiness as I like to keep things peaceful, especially here at home.
Life is what it is, and we have to make the best of it. Not that we have a problem free life, as who hasn't, but now with the increased daily power cuts everyone is on edge.
So be it.

I hope that you have enjoyed the pictures and the fun.

At my home in Europe, in the Czech Republic, magpies and jays do the most damage to nests.

I saw someone else also mentioned the magpies in Canada, but we don't have magpies, or jays in South Africa. We have many raiders, such as pied crows, falcons, buzzards, hawks, kites and some others.
I have posted all of them in the past.

I'm also glad that there wasn't a massacre, I wasn't prepared to see it.
But, I just wanted to see more and more photos of this beautiful bird, it is beautiful. And your photos are very good.

We see it regularly as there are many nest raiders here.
Thank you and yes, I agree that it is a lovely bird.
Blessings!

Woah! Well done Ship horn! Hes's a beauty. I was watching one earlier but mostly a weekend of various parent and fledglings. Hoopoe (happy HAPPY dance) plus the Southern Chanting Goshawk adult and juvenile

Wow, what a beautiful big bird this is. I would enjoy watching it, but only as long as the Hawk isn't killing, because although 'such is life' ... I hate to see such.
Thanks to the Hawk Buster the little birds are save 😀

Cool photos and fun story, my friend 👍😊

Wow, now I have a few new names, as one calls me "Ships horn" and now you call me "Hawk buster". I have to learn to describe my actions with no names, as the name thing is contagious :) !LOLZ
Yes, I also hate to see such, but at times there is nothing that one can do.

Thank you and I am glad that you liked the post my friend :)

Cheers and thanks.

Hihi, you said this name yourself 🤣 !LOLZ

At the moment I just go quickly through the posts to vote, but I take time for yours and sometimes I just have to take more time to say something 😊

My own fault to give myself a name meant as a joke 😜 !LOLZ

Sorry about your time, but somehow it makes me feel good to know that you are a true friend. Not many like you around these days 🙂

Cheers and thanks.

I'll always remember the "Hawk Buster" 😉 !LOLZ

The next weeks are going to be busy too, but in November I might be able to take a week off.

Such a sweet story. There's no doubt it's a magnificent bird.. but at the same time, I couldn't bare watching one raid a little family either. Whether some may agree or not, I would have done the same. We are nature too. Thanks for sharing the spendour of your surroundings. There's some Cape Sparrows building a nest a my folk for days now.. every day, they're carrying building material to their nest. Keep well my good friend.

Thank you and after the recent slaughter, I was determined to prevent it from happening again.
We regard all life as sacred and it is harrowing to stand and watch a predator tearing a baby bird apart.
The sparrow parents that lost their babies, have now decided to build a nest right here in our front garden and the wife sent her husband out to look for a fight with a guinea fowl, so that he could bring some feathers home for the nest :) !LOLZ

Glad that your folks also have them building a nest and yes it does take a while.

Here he is on our front gate.

Hope that you will have a good new week.

How amazng is that! Too adorable. Hope you have a super awesome week my wonderful friend. Thanks for brightening up mine.

May your new week also be great!

Despite being a predator for the cute little birds, it is a fine specimen. Just because it is the circle of life doesn’t mean we can’t intervene occasionally and save a couple feathery lives.

Recently I was in western Canada and they had the most wonderful looking magpies. Turns out they are like flying raccoons to the locals and raid nests the same way as the harrier hawks.

Bravo for the pictures and the story along with your act of heroism!

Thank you Zeke and it is indeed a real good looker, but it can go and raid elsewhere as our territory is out of bounds :) LOL

The magpies are good looking and I didn't know that they are also raiders, as we don't have magpies here. We do have many other raiding birds though, and one has to constantly keep an eye out.

Glad that you liked the pics and the story and I am no hero, only trying to help :)

You did well by defending the small birds, they deserve to live till growth.

Thank you and it's just the way that I am.

As much as I am fascinated by the raptors, I could not bear watch them kill the prey. You save some little life, Hawk Buster. 🙂 I love that nickname.

We have seen it now a few times and i9t's not pleasant to see a baby bird being ripped apart.
Hahaha, just fooling around with the Hawk Buster name.
