π¦ The Eurasian three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus)
π Picoides picus (lat.) woodpecker, -oides similar
π tridactylus tridaktylos (Greek) three-toed
As you can guess from the name, this woodpecker has only three toes on his paws. This distinguishes it from other species of woodpeckers. And not only. Instead of a red cap, he has a yellow cap on his head (for males).
Quite a rare species in the forest. I meet them only in the middle of autumn, sometimes as part of a mixed flock of birds, along with other birds. Sometimes found in winter. But with the advent of spring, he disappears somewhere, apparently flies far into the taiga forests.
