Banded Woodpecker | Chrysophlegma miniaceum | https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/252686568 |
Hi guys, on my way home from my wife's village, I found an interesting species, namely the Banded woodpecker (Chrysophlegma miniaceum). This species is one of the beautiful and stunning woodpeckers from the Picidae family. This bird has a distinctive reddish brown body with fine black lines that adorn the chest to the stomach, giving an elegant and attractive impression. The male bird's head is decorated with a bright red crown, while the female has a softer color without a crown.
Banded woodpecker can be found in lowland and hill forests. Its geographical distribution includes Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Java. This bird usually lives in large trees that provide insects as its main food and shelter.
As an insectivorous bird, the banded woodpecker is a bird species that plays an important role in maintaining the forest ecosystem. Its strong beak is used to peck tree bark, looking for insect larvae hidden in the wood. In addition, this bird is often seen in pairs or small groups, making a distinctive "wik-wik-wik" sound when communicating.
Interesting isn't this woodpecker species, have you ever seen a banded woodpecker while exploring the forest? Share your experience in the comments column!
