I hate going up into the ceiling space... our roof is quite low-pitched, so it is a bit of a squeeze even for a little guy like me. I like the landing area, where there is the old space for the old gas heater... so, lots of boards to just move around in and sit on. It is what we now use for some storage... but past that, I'm a little bit scared of moving too far away... just in case I end up falling through the gyprock ceiling and falling the rest of the way to the ground.
On the plus side, it is much less claustrophobic than going under the house... and both case (ceiling and under the house...) my wife absolutely refuses to do either. I hate it, but no one else will do it until I train my daughters.
Anyway, this particular time, I was up in the rafters looking for a tiny little leak in the roof. It is a rare and small leak, but I wanted to find it and check that it wasn't that serious before calling in the professionals.
So, the tiling on our house is old.... but it works, the sarking is completely gone and ripped. and during long periods of sustained rain or wind, the water can blow back a little under the tiles. Nothing serious apparently... according to my tradie relatives.
Lots of cellulose and dust... one of them is intentional for the insulation, and the other... well, matches the cobwebs and the various bits and pieces that get left up here during the years.
So, this time... it will be my first time getting a long distance away from the landing. Along and over this ducting, is the main beam of the house. Thick enough to balance on easily whilst supporting myself on the other supporting beams. I have to keep in mind that there are much bigger and heavier people that do this regularly. And my tradie relatives have told me how to do it... and what to avoid!
I make sure not to squash the ducting... but the relatives tell me that they often just lie on it, and it will just spring right back up!
... so, sadly... the drips are occurring way over there... behind that ducting. And there are only thinner beams heading out that way... and I'm not keen on falling through the ceiling, so it will have to wait for a different way to search for the culprit.
A few weeks after this, one of the family came around and kicked back the tiles. We found a little bit of water evidence... but no obvious place where it had entered. Apparently, likely that it came from a tiny crack in the pointing, and then slid down the remains of the sarking until it came out near the air vent where we saw it inside the house. So... I will spend a morning just sealing up every last little crack up there... and in a couple of years, we are due for a repointing anyway! And possibly a retile... or a replacement roof with sheet metal?

Wow the leaks, always give problems and are difficult to cure, at home we have several, but this roof is very susceptible, it is not safe for someone to climb to do the work from the outside, we have managed to minimize them from the inside. I hope the leaks stop in your house. Have a wonderful weekend.
I'm hoping that we have managed to get the problem... thankfully, it isn't major... but it is a good idea to try and find them before they get out of hand!
