This year, the farm that had been growing shiso for my syrup over the past five years had a tough time to grow shiso. So I didn’t produce any syrup for sale. Instead, I hurriedly grew some shiso in my garden at the beginning of summer with the seeds I got from my gardening friend and bottled the small batches I could make into mini bottles to share with family and friends.
I decided to treat this as an experimental year. I tried two things: bottling in mini sizes, which I wanted to do for years and adding the fragrance of Damascus rose. Both experiments turned out to be really fun and worthwhile.
As always, I first cooked the shiso leaves. Once the liquid cooled slightly, I infused it with dried Damascus rose petals (sold as tea) to let the aroma steep into the syrup.
Since I only made around twenty bottles this time, I printed the labels at a local copy shop on sticker paper. Even with this simple method, the bottles look quite professional. I still remember the early days—printing labels at the copy shop and gluing them on with a glue stick! You can build a business even from such an amature-ish beginnings. It makes me feel nostalgic 😉
Now that the syrup is ready, I’m planning to give these mini bottles to family and friends when we see each other for Christmas and New Year. Just thinking about that makes me feel happy ☺️
今年はこの5年生産をお願いしていた農家で紫蘇が不作で、製品として販売する紫蘇シロップは作らず、夏のはじめに庭で慌てて育て始めた紫蘇を使って家族と友人にお裾分けする分をミニボトルに詰めました。販売する分が作れなかったのは残念ですが、今年は実験の年と割り切って、ミニボトルに詰めてみる、ダマスカスローズの香りを加えてみるという二つの実験をできたのはよかったです。
いつものようにまずは煮出して、そのあと少し温度が下がってから、お茶用に売られているドライのダマスカスローズを浸して香りを移しました。
20本ほどの少量だったので、ラベルは市内のコピーショップで裏面がシールになっている紙に印刷しました。これでも結構本格的な見た目になります。生産当初は、コピーショップで印刷したものをスティック糊で貼っていたのですから。スタートはそんなでもビジネスになるんだなと学んだ5年。なんだか懐かしいです 😉
さてさて、出来上がったシロップはクリスマスや年末年始に会う家族や友人にお裾分けしていこうと思います。そんなことを考えるのもなんだか幸せですね！
