As severe weather continues to lash parts of New South Wales, emergency services are urging people in low-lying areas of Sydney to evacuate their homes.

Since 9am on Sunday, over 22,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in the suburbs of Hurstville, Kogarah and Rockdale, with more Evacuation Centres expected to open throughout the day.

With the forecast predicting more heavy rain and strong winds, authorities are urging people in at-risk areas to evacuate to higher ground as soon as possible.

The weather bureau had warned of the potential for heavy rainfall and flash flooding along the east coast region from Newcastle to Bateman's Bay in New South Wales state. Rain is expected to intensify over the next two days and could lead to landslides in the area.

"We are now facing dangers from multiple sources -- flash flooding, riverine flooding and coastal erosion," New South Wales emergency services minister Steph Cooke said in a televised media briefing.

In light of the severe weather conditions, Cooke urged people to reconsider their holiday travel plans. More than 200 millimeters of rain have fallen in many areas, with some areas seeing as much as 350 millimeters. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for possible flooding along the Nepean River.

The continuous rainfalls have resulted in the overflowing of Sydney's primary dam, as stated by the water authorities. They went on to say that the recent spillage is estimated to be on the same level as the large-scale spillage that occurred at Warragamba Dam in March 2021.

SES Commissioner Carlene York has stated that water levels in dams are spillage level, with rivers flowing at dangerously high speeds. She has warned of possible flash flooding in areas subject to rainfall. The dams are starting to spill and the rivers are flowing very rapidly and dangerously. There is a risk of flash flooding depending on where the rains are.

The Australian government has deployed 100 troops to help with sandbagging and two helicopters to aid with any rescues, Defense Minister Richard Marles said on Sky News.
