The Hive Calendar

In this post we need to pick the notable dates that will be celebrated on Hive's social media outreach accounts such as Twitter 'hiveblocks'.

Until recently we've avoided all notable holidays and days of interest, both in order to not exclude or offend anyone inadvertently and as an oversight. We've only celebrated our own key milestones, which will keep doing.

Recently, however, we broke that trend by celebrating Christmas and New Year. Acknowledging holidays and notable days that our decentralized community cares about may not lead to every day being a good fit for everyone, but instead is a good sharing and mix of our individual backgrounds and cultures.

In this post I ask you to help make the list.

How to participate?

Reply in comments with the top 3 notable days or religious holidays that you think are a good fit. Use this format:

My holidays:
1 - Name of day - Day Month
2 -
3 -

No national days (days that are specific to a country or region) please.

Our calendar so far is ...

Days of interest so far:

Hive Birthday - March 20
BTC Birthday - Jan 3
Pi Day - March 14
HODL Day - Dec 18
Bitcoin Pizza Day - May 22

Religious holidays so far:

Christmas - Dec 24
?? Add yours in comments and I will update this section

Secular notable days:

New Years Day - Jan 1
International Women's Day - March 8
Halloween - Oct 31

Selection of holidays

  • If there's a proper way to congratulate people for your holiday, please include a quote or two.
  • For religious holidays we'll keep it to a minimum, one day per faith. Please keep this in mind while recommending the religious holidays that are important to you.
  • Days of interest and secular days should be non-offensive and appropriate for all.
  • Once again, no national days or days specific to geographical areas. That means that Thanksgiving and Victory Day are not suitable for this.
  • You may recommend the 'birthday' of a Hive dapp or community as part of your holidays, but since you only have three submissions, choose wisely.
  • You need to respond here in comments, not by DMing me.
  • Yes, I know what you're thinking, you may recommend it.

One day that I'm on the ball about is Valentine's Day. It's prominent globally but it's also the day we found out about the start of the hostile takeover that led to Hive being created. For myself it'll always be the day I came home, sat down and found out the news, and then didn't get up until sometime in May when I finally took a day off. I'll leave it to those in the comments to decide.

Thanks for your contribution. Your input will be documented here and in Gitlab. Submissions close 7 days from now.

Except for Xmas, I'd rather we avoid religious days. I daresay the majority of Hive is probably either Christian or from a predominately Christian population, but looking at it from the outside in, many may find a religious celebration uncomfortable. I have many Japanese friends, for instance, who find religious celebration uncomfortable. However harmless some of us think that may be, I don't think Hive should be in the business of turning off anyone. We want to attract as many people as we can to this network, not push any away by making them feel awkward. If you include one religious day (like, say, Easter) you need to include all religious days, and that would just be overwhelming, like trying to celebrate everyones' birthday.

Xmas is kind of an exception as it has expanded beyond religion and is now celebrated in a secular way in many places (like Japan).

My pick would be for fun, perhaps geeky, celebrations. Like pi day or star wars day (may the 4th be with you), talk like a pirate day, and these kind of fun ones that anyone can get into and are not culturally or religious exclusive.

We originally ignored all religious holidays for this exact reason but looking back, we missed many opportunities that others took. I think you're right and we'll end up just with a few major holidays which are beyond one religion by now.

well, when I was young(er) at school where we have clubs or communities... there is this day where we celebrate and showcase each other "clubs" to everyone we also invite other schools etc.

art section showcasing their best, as well as the cooking club, writers club etc.

Don't know if something like that can be celebrated... or is already celebrated here on hive.

We can make something like that without too much of a problem. Something like a Community Day. Maybe this is what we can set for Valentines Day.

That would be nice... hope we can invite a lot of people to check out our communities, I really would like visitors to stop by.

Thank you for hearing me out :)

add in the Jewish Holidays 2022
Passover April 15 - 22
Rosh Hashanah Sept. 25 - 27
Yom Kippur Oct. 4 - 5
Chanukah Dec. 18 - 26

Feb 4th~My birthday :D

My holidays:

  1. Talk like a pirate day - 19th September
  2. Towel day for Douglas Adams - 25th May
  3. Ada Lovelace Day - Second Tuesday of October

My holidays:

  1. #InternationalInternetDay - 29 October
I actually prefer the November 12th date since there's a bit more distance from Halloween, but it seems there's a good amount of traction on social media for #InternationalInternetDay & I can't find a comparable one for the 12th.
  2. International Coffee Day 1 October
Some celebrate 29 September but Twitter likes the 1st. And because, @c0ff33a coffee. 😊
  3. Valentine's Day - 14 February
Yes, I get the bad association with the takeover, but I feel that makes it even more imperative that we celebrate the day. After all, if that 🤬 hadn't happened, we might not have our current amazeballs blockchain home.

And love @steevc's suggestions!

My holidays:
1 - Three Kings Day - January 06
2 - International Workers' Day - May 01
3 - World Environment Day - June 05

My holidays:
1 - Genesis of Hive - 20 March (Block #41,818,753)
2 - Midsummer's Day (Summer Solstice) - 21 June
3 - Diwali - 24 October (Hindu; "Blessings of Diwali...")

My bad, I should've specified that Hive birthday will be celebrated. Figured that's a given.

When you said "Yes, I know what you're thinking, you may recommend it," it was the Genesis of Hive that I thought you were talking about! 😂

1- Christmas - 24/25 December
2 - New Year - 1 January
3 - Easter - 17/18 April

1.valentine day -February 29

Dec 21, new year festivus for the restivus.

May 1st, labor day.

Jun 21, longest day of the year and beginning of the death of the year.

I think we should have several nyk,nyc days, too.
If the exchanges are regulated by crooks on the take, it is up to us to keep them honest.

How a about reforming Women`s day into something like Gender Equality Day? I think it would be more uniting and wise.

Was the day renamed recently?

Dunno, but Hive is like New World, isnt't? We can do whatever we want, right? So we better do our best!

We can just skip that one if it's controversial.

That would work as well, especially while we don't have a more offical proposal / legitimacy for this one... Woman's day I definitely found, well, obsolate in many ways.

Can you explain further?

This is when I started battling in Splinterlands :)
Splinterlands has made 98% of my portfolio value, so I celebrate Splinterlands.

I have two suggestions that you may want to discard at the end of the day.

  • The friendship day on July 30th; This is also the day on which I joined Hive (known as Steem back in the days).
  • What about the Star Wars day on May the 4th (be with you)?

Cheers!

Greetings, I would like to say that my probable dates are:
6/01 the birth of the spk network tokens as this day will be historic.
01/05 world workers day.
And as a religious date the catholic celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

1 World Bee Day Friday 20 May 2022 - May 20th is celebrated as 'World Bee Day' across the globe to raise awareness about the significance of bees and beekeeping. Appropriate for Hive I would have thought

2 International Day of Happiness Sunday 20 Mar

3 No Rhyme or Reason Day Thur 1 Sept

Good catch on the World Bee Day in particular.

Yeah thought the World Beed Day was an appropriate one :)
