Hello dear friends! Today, nature surprised me again and gave me a great lesson about the living beings that inhabit it.
Hola queridos amigos amantes de la naturaleza. Hoy como siempre la naturaleza me volvió a sorprender y dar una gran lección sobre los seres vivos que habitan en ella.
Today's walk was destined to hunt some lichens to photograph them and expand my gallery. It all started with this trunk you see in the picture. The sun was very strong while I was trying to adjust the light input on my camera through the shutter, when I refocused, I got a nice surprise. I looked over the trunk and found a long stalk with beautiful magenta inflorescences. Without wasting time, I photographed it from several angles.
El paseo de hoy estaba destinado a cazar algunos líquenes para fotografiarlos y ampliar mi galería. Todo empezó por este tronco que ven en la imagen. El sol estaba muy fuerte, mientras trataba de ajustar la entrada de luz en mi cámara a través del obturador, al volver a enfocar me llevé una linda sorpresa. Miré por encima del tronco y me encontre un largo pedúnculo con unas hermosas inflorescencias color magenta. Sin perder tiempo la fotografíe a través de varios ángulos.
When I got home, what a surprise I got, it turned out that this beautiful flower was a wild orchid that nature had put in my way to learn about it.
Venezuela is a country whose national flower is the orchid, the Cattleya mossiae, so I am more familiar with its shape. I have also seen in flower shops orchids of the Phalaenopsis type. That is why at first, I did not recognize that the flowers I had photographed corresponded to an orchid.
Al llegar a casa, vaya corpresa que me llevé, resultó que esa flor hermosa era una orquídea silvestre que la naturaleza había puesto en mi camino para aprender sobre ella.
Venezuela es un país que su flor nacional es la orquídea, la Cattleya mossiae, así que estoy más familiarizada con su forma. También he visto en floristerías orquídeas del tipo Phalaenopsis. Por eso que en un principio no reconocí que las flores que había fotografiado correspondían a una orquídea.
This orchid is of the Epidendrum secundum type, an epiphytic orchid. It grows on the trunk of a tree. It can grow in numerous types of habitats, preferably humid mountainous forests located near sea level as well as up to 3200 meters above sea level. It is a plant that can tolerate cold climates even a light frost. It is a species of orchid that can be found in South America (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela). However, it is also found in Mexican valleys.
Esta orquídea es del tipo Epidendrum secundum, una orquídea epífita, es decir crecen sobre el tronco de un árbol. Puede crecer en numerosos tipos de hábitat, de preferencia bosques montañosos húmedos ubicados cerca del nivel del mar así como hasta 3200 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Es una planta que puede tolerar climas fríos incluso una helada ligera. Es una especie de orquídea que se puede encontrar en Sudamérica (Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Venezuela), sin embargo también se encuentran en valles Mexicanos.
Colloquially it is known as Crucifix Orchid. It is a plant that is usually confused with the common grass. It is not until it blooms, that you can appreciate that it is an orchid. It is a plant that sometimes has several aerial stems when it blooms. In my case, there was only one stem with inflorescences at the top.
Coloquialmente es conocida como Orquídea Crucifijo. Es una planta que por lo general se confunde con el césped común. No es hasta que florece, que se puede apreciar que se trata de una orquídea. Es una planta que a veces presenta varios tallos aéreos cuando florece. En mi caso solo había un tallo con las inflorescencias en su parte superior.
Its flowers form several clusters although they come from a single stalk. The deep magenta structures are the sepals, and the petals are the light violet ones. There is one of them that stands out for presenting a yellow protuberance called the labellum, whose striking color is an invitation for pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.
Sus flores forman varios racimos aunque provienen de un único pedúnculo. Las estructuras de color magenta intenso son los sépalos y los pétalos son los de color violeta claro. Hay uno de ellos que destaca por presentar una protuberancia de color amarillo llamado labelo, cuyo color llamativo es una invitación para los polinizadores como colibríes, mariposas y abejas.
The other petals are of a very thin texture and end in jagged edges. They look so delicate that they appear to be made of very fine silk.
Los demás pétalos son de una textura muy delgada y terminan en bordes dentados. Se ven tan delicados que parecen estar hechos de una seda muy fina.
Today I didn't find any lichens, but I came away with some fabulous images of this type of orchid that is not very common like the ones I mentioned in the previous lines of my publication.
El día de hoy no encontré líquenes pero me llevé unas imágenes fabulosas de este tipo de orquídea que al parecer no es muy común como las que mencioné en las anteriores líneas de mi publicación.
