Strange And Rare Orchids?

Hi Orchid Lovers. Been a while since I posted here. Wasn't for lack of interest I assure you, but rather lack of suitable materials for what I think could make a worthwhile post. And now I think I have one. I do hope you like it.

For this post I would like to feature another plant which I saw in the plant and flower market here in our city. This is also where I saw the Vandas I featured here many weeks ago. This plant is also an orchid but it's bloom is quite different from a normal orchid flower.

I got interested in this oddly shaped orchid as people are normally attracted to strange things. I looked it up in the internet and this is what I discovered.

Paphiopedilum ciliolare is a species of flowering plant in the orchid family, Orchidaceae. It is known commonly as the short haired paphiopedilum. It is endemic to the Philippines. This is a rare orchid with a total wild population of fewer than 2500 mature individuals. It is also commonly known as lady's slipper orchids or simply slipper orchids. Wikipedia

Although the statement that it is rare has been debunked and considered a myth. It is not rare anymore as they are now easily propagated by plants and ornamental growers such as this plant store or by practically anyone. The orchids are sold in varying stages of growth or maturity. Here you can buy the matured plant, which would be really expensive at $50 a pot. See photo below.

Or you can buy a seedling with the buds just beginning to grow for $25 a pot. See below.

Or just buy the seedling and wait for it to bud and bloom which will take more time but a lot cheaper at $5 a pot.

They are characterised by the slipper-shaped pouches (modified labella) or lips of the flowers hence the name. It isn't as showy as her other orchid relatives but it does have its own innate beauty that grows on you. More like moldy cheese or dry wine of which preference is an acquired taste.

Would you like to have this plant in your garden @ewkaw? Or your living room @bdmillergallery?

I definitely would.

That's it for this post. I hope you liked it. Until next time please stay safe everyone and may you have a blessed Sunday.

(All photos are mine.)

Ohhhh so that's the one! One of the terrestrial ones.
I actually do have one :) Not exactly like this, but also Paphiopedilum pinocchio var. alba. I bought it as a seedling and I am still waiting :p

The flowers are super pretty!

Please do post a photo of the one you have. How long have you had it? How big is it now? It would be interesting to see what the flower would look like.

Its not big, I got it few years ago as a very young seedling and I new I would have to wait few years.
I am not sure how big it will have to be to start blooming. It is growing leaves only, but still seems a bit too small to bloom.
I will take some photos later :)

Yes! I will await your post on that! Thanks.

Thanks a lot @ecency. This is truly and greatly appreciated.

I would love to use Ecency but the problem I encounter with this is the input screen is too small in my phone. If memory serves me right I can only see two lines of text when I type. I can't expand it as much as I try to look anywhere for it. Maybe you can help. I used to do all my posts with ESteem until after you changed to Ecency.

Did you know Ecency.com works great as well, if there was problem with mobile app? We have made few improvements on mobile app side as well, feel free to check it out again. Otherwise, try our website... 😉

Thanks for the heads up. I will be checking it out. 👍

Looks very beautiful 🥰

For me it is the kind of beauty that grows on you. The longer you look at them the more they become beautiful. Thanks for your appreciation.

I want this in my living room!!! 😍🤗😁 What a fantastic post @gems.and.cookies. I am sorry that I missed it earlier. Thanks for posting into the community again. I am glad you did, regardless of how often you do.

Lady's Slipper sounds like a cool name too. Very BEAUTIFUL Orchid. I would buy a couple of the $5.00 ones for sure. I can wait or the blooming to occur - patience! lol. I really like the variegated leaves as well. That it not something I see everyday.

Thanks for sharing!

I am so glad you liked it. Thanks for your kind and encouraging words. I do hope I can post again soon. Stay safe.

Beautiful Paphs! They're sure very unusual, but their growing habit is not as interesting as others to me, so somehow I'm still missing Paphs in my orchid collection. In Europe they seem to be considerably less expensive than where you live
