RE: Weekend engagement week 22 topic: An eye on your hobby

Me...I'll be pushing the order button tomorrow. I am going to take some time over the winter to semi sort of travel back in time...almost 40 years ago. 1980 or close to that time frame was my introduction to computers, real computers, in the form of a Radio Shack TRS-80 Color Computer. It was basically a really think fat keyboard with about 2 in square half inch thick game/program cartridges. It came with a table top style book with some basic instructions on how to do some simple programming. The disk drive was a regular off the self nothing special cassette recorder player.

So in the morning I will be pushing the button on a Raspberry-Pi keyboard kit. It has been a long time since I did any tinkering with computer stuff, mostly just buying and using and not doing any real learning lately other than how to use a spreadsheet. I have seen a lot of post by people doing things with the Raspberry-Pi's and some of it looked interesting, and this may help me learn a little bit of programming and maybe wean me off of using Microsoft. I really do not want to go the windows 10 route, even though I have with my laptop, but it has not been connected to the internet since it's initial set-up.

If nothing else it will help relieve the winter it's to damn cold outside blues, and maybe prevent blue toe syndrome.

Sort:

The new Pi400 is a game-changer in personal mini computers. The idea to put everything inside the keyboard is a great one and adding extra processor speed and memory makes the little toy into something quite powerful. I entered this world a few years ago with my first Arduino when I decided to attend a two-hour course, then I got a Pi3B and a kit that I used to play around with some electronic experiments using sensors and relays. I think is a great mini-computer to play around with, as you can learn about a bunch of different things, be it coding, or hacking some projects, but even if you just want an extra computer it's worth the purchase. I am thinking of getting one to create a Bitcoin node and experiment with it.

I'm not much into computers but I'm into not being cluelesseither so I'll have to do some research and find out what this is all about. Sounds interesting.

And if I run into problems there are a lot of people on Hive that are playing around with the Raspberry-Pi, so un like my first computer I should be able to find help a little bit easier.

That is for sure!

Wow! That will be really great, at least you will put me through. 🙄

Ooooh a tech person - you have my respect! For me it' functional only and the LAST thing I enjoy in my downtime. LOL. Always a chore to manage updates and "stuff".

It's an incredible skill to be good with machines and gadgets though.... Good on you!

Not really a tech guy, but I am going to try to pretend to be one for a hobby. LoL I've been wanting to build a computer for a while now, but that is expensive to do, so a cheap one to learn some programming on with out having to worry about my big machine.

Pretending is good... fake it till you make it and all that. But actually PLAYING is a serious step towards creating an inventing.

Enjoy the tinkering and make sure you have good light and a good chair. 😊

This seems like a good use of time and certainly something that will keep the old noggin ticking over.

My first computer was an Amiga 500, and nope I couldn't afford the 500Kb RAM upgrade. Lol. I didn't do much with it to be honest as computers weren't that interesting to me then, or really now for that matter.

I've not heard of a Raspberry Pi to be honest, but twiddling around with computers is sure likely to get you through those cold winter days.

I hope you have time to keep us up to date with how you're going.

Legit hobby. Thanks for joining in.

I bought my first computer, an Epson Equity 2 in 1980. I missed the entire Tandy/Radio Shack/Amiga movement. Probably to my detriment, because I didn't learn any programming skills for years and am still miles behind my peers.

I did learn to kick software around, and I'm a filing wizard due to thousands of floppy discs. I learned DOS commands and Basic commands and so MS DOS wasn't a big mystery to me.

But the Raspberry Pi has caught my eye for quite sometime, too. I'll look for your updates and stories in the near future. I don't use Microsoft anymore, I'm all Linux all the time. In fact, my laptop has never had MS on it, I ordered it blank.

If nothing else it will help relieve the winter it's to damn cold outside blues, and maybe prevent blue toe syndrome.

I get it. I'll probably wait until July to seriously consider a Raspberry Pi!

I have been wanting to move away from MS and Google for some time, so I am hoping that I will be able to learn enough with the Rasp-Pi that I can start the move. But it has been a long time since doing any computer config files to get things to work, and it seems that everything boots from the memory cards, so that should make experimenting a lot less risky.

Moved to Linux in 2012. Best move I ever made computer wise.

All 5 of mine are Bill Gates Spyware free... Lmao

Only pewter we have with that virus ridden corrupt code on it is @pooky-jax's laptop. She has to keep that bloatware on hers for her work. And Microsloth Windblows constantly reminds us how much better Linux really is.

I am hoping to use it to try and experiment with a few different systems. I was one of the few people that like OS2 Warp. It is actually still somewhat available.

I started with Linux Lite. It is still my go to. I have different versions of it on my 3 laptops. Cinnamon is the best overall in my opinion. I have messed with 10 or 12 different Linux Distros.

I'm just an Ubuntu guy, have been since '12. I've gotten real used to it and not particularly interested in any other. It's one of those "If it works, don't fix it" situations.

OMG! How I wish I had an idea on this, I think I am really lacking behind. 😞

I’m not good at computer or technology 😊 and don't even understand what Raspberry-Pi is 😃 I think I should learn more about those things...hehee :)) Thank you for sharing something new( for me)

Raspberry-Pi Community on Hive, so I hope I will be able to get some help if needed learning to use it. A small community but still a small group that will be helpful I am sure.#raspberrypi is the tag a lot of people use, there is even a

Thank you :)) I will check it out 🙂

Wow! I don't think at that time my parents had thought of given birth to me. It's a very good idea most expecially now you know how to go about it and what it will help you prevent. 🙄😁

Ohhh I also want to learn a bit about programming and I agree with you about that w10... Personally I don't like it

Who knows one day I may be a python guru, that is one of the languages that Raspberry PI supports, so it could be fun, I guess I will see if my brain has the patient for it in a few months.

It will! Be positive ! I'm going to learn too and then we can share our knowledge together haha

That's one of my aspiration last year but I couldn't follow it up. Go for it

I like w10, its w8 I don't like

Ah I remember the first computer I ever touched, I believe the name of it was Kalekiovision or something of the sort. I could be totally off base on that, I'll have to look it up but my friends dad fixed computers and this was one of his relics that he let us play with and we had such a fun time with it.

Eventually I'll get into the raspberry Pi game, it looks like a lot of people are having some fun with it and they are pretty versatile. Hopefully I can spend some time dedicating to learning how to operate one after the holidays, I might need something fun to do!

It seems every couple of years I need to add something new to do in the winter, and I thought it would be fun.

Wow, Radio Shack. Now that's going back a while to that particular computer. I thought those guys had gone out of business a few years ago?

I had to check, there are still about 400 stores open according to a quick google search, they still have a web page, but I am not sure if they are out of bankruptcy yet.
