Weekend engagement week 22 topic: An eye on your hobby

For most people weekends give the chance to engage in more enjoyable activities than the working week; These activities are called sometimes called hobbies; Drawing, painting, cooking, reading, sewing, woodwork, DIY, sky-diving, hiking, scuba diving, photography, Lego-building, making or listening to music, sex, learning a language, crafts, people-watching, walking, sports, movies and TV series...The list of hobbies is literally endless - Hobbies are pretty much whatever you like doing.

I wrote about one of mine the other day, a failed hobby as it wasn't very successful; You can read about it here if you're interested. It was a new hobby I'd hoped to start and start I did but it ended pretty quickly too - It was a bit of a crash and burn hobby, literally.

This week I thought I'd make the #weekend-engagement topic hobby related in honour of me resurrecting that hobby-fail and having a second crack at it which is probably also going to be a failure, but might provide a few moments of enjoyment.

So this week all you need to do is answer one or both of the following questions as creatively, interestingly or funnily as you wish to.

Weekend-engagement topic week 22

- Answer both or just one -

- - - - - - - - -

- Tell us about your past, existing or favourite hobby and why you like it.

- If you could do any hobby at all which you would choose and why.

It might be cool to show us some pictures if you have any, just to help tell the story and demonstrate your hobby better. Just answer below in the comments of this post.

Don't drop links to external posts as your answer, the idea is to comment below and engage with others who reply to your comment. Feel free to make a hobby/weekend related post in the Engage the weekend Community though - I'll be curating in there all weekend.

Feel free to invite others to this weeks' #weekend-engagement topic, the more the better...It's about engagement and is a great place for people to meet new people. Last week the topic-post generated 816 comments...So there's no shortage of people to engage with!

That's it y'all, a very easy topic this week...Either tell us about your existing hobby or the one you would most like to do if you could. It's easy.

Have a great weekend y'all!

Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default - Tomorrow isn't promised.

Be well

Hello dear friend, good afternoon @galenkp; What a beautiful theme you have chosen for today, and how much acceptance

My favorite hobby is being in the garden on Sundays, I know that people love doing other activities different from this one, many even call it work. It's true, it's work, but when work gives you satisfaction and you love what you do, it is no longer a job, it becomes a hobby.

We love spending time in the garden preparing the ground for plants, cleaning weeds, applying homemade fertilizers that we prepare with our own hands or pesticides made with garlic cloves.

The good thing about our hobby is that we don't use chemical products, we do it like my grandparents did (all by hand) That is healthy for the fruits of the garden and mother earth.

I do it because I have these satisfactions, eating and feeding my family with the fruits of the plants that my hands planted. There is no greater satisfaction.

If I could choose a different hobby, I would undoubtedly be a bird watcher, I love birds, I would like to travel the world to know each and every one of the birds that exist.

I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid weekend

Hey, I also do gardening it's one of the things I'm doing right now, I talked about this today, I did my own homemade fertilizer too, i have my first fruit from my tomato plant ;) Gardening it's just pleasant

IMG_20201107_121208_299.jpg

hello dear friend @josehany good night
How good that you are doing your garden, there is nothing more satisfactory than planting the food that you will take to your table.
how good those tomatoes look that you enjoy it a lot
have a happy start to the week

Yes and I compared my tomato with which I bought in the market and my tomato was more red inside and more juicy, the look was totally different

Those are the things that make me do this type of planting, I really appreciate that you let me know about this experience
happy start of week

Yes - what a delight it is to be in a garden which yields such yummy healthy fresh food - your squashes look amazing!

Living in Thailand gardening is really tough - it's either very hot, or very wet. So gardening best done at 5am with tools down by 9am.

Admire your dedication and your passion.

!ENGAGE 15

hello dear friend @artemislives good night
I heartily appreciate your kind words
If we love the garden, we do things with great affection and that shows in the results
It's a shame that they can't grow their own food there
thank you very much for this pleasant visit
have a wonderful night

Good day my friend. Like everybody knew I would choose motorcycles, I knew you would be in your garden. Every time I see a picture I can see the love and satisfaction just oozing out. It's a special place of yours.

Bird watching? I do a little. Pretty casually. But I have a really pretty woman friend that loves it. So I go with her when I can. Strictly for the bird watching, you know :) Watching something.

yes dear friend @ bigtom13 you are well known for your passion for them. like me in the garden. are the things that identify us.

It's good that you have a friend to share beautiful moments watching birds, without a doubt you should enjoy her company a lot, there is no better fun than being alone in nature with a friend who loves to see birds. Truth?

Thank you very much for this pleasant visit and your kind words
have a wonderful weekend

Oh, it's wonderful to spend a day with her whenever I can. She's bright and witty and attractive and knows all the good places to see birds. It's all good.

We've known each other over 60 years. I love hearing her stories (she's really got some) and enjoy telling my stories. It really is a marvelous thing.

I hope your weekend has been peaceful and tasty!

Gardening organically is a good way to garden and I think the lack of chemicals makes the produce taste better. Providing for oneself is a rewarding experience also, and is a good hobby to have.

how are you dear friend @galenkp
Without a doubt, the natural products that are sown, maintained and harvested naturally are always more exquisite.
I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid night and a happy rest

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

You truly have a green thumb. I'm not much of gardener. If I was, I would have a massive garden like my mom used to have planting tomatoes, peppers, onions, cabbage, greens. The fact that you are growig organically is awesome. I can see where working in your garden could be a hobby. But it also seems like an awful lot of work. But if you love what you do, then no amount of work is. tiresome.

how are you dear friend @justclickindiva good night
You should try with your garden, you would be surprised what people are capable of doing, it begins with green onions and peregil, those are easy-growing plants, there you will have more confidence and you will see that after that you will sow anything. I am learning about the marches, now I plant everything that has seed.
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience
I wish you a happy start to the week

My all-time favorite hobby is basically learning new stuff almost each and every day. But right now, I have been more into chess. Bullet chess in particular. Where players set their clocks at 1 minute and play like machines.

Here is my most recent game in chess.com where you can see some pieces being highlighted as I "pre-move" before my opponent even takes his turn for me to save precious time:
ezgif1d943e42515ef.gif

Before, I only play 3-minute blitz games which give players more time, and essentially, enough time to think. With 1-minute games, each player pretty much does their own prepared moves for each "if then" situation on the board. Kinda like running a program in their own heads, hoping the opponent's brain "crashes" first. 😆

So yeah, I allot quite more time to chess recently than ever. Right now, I'm unofficially fluctuating in the 17-hundred and 18-hundred rating in bullet and stuck at around sub-1800 rating for bullet (unofficial as well). Chess kinda improves my memory and, for sure, my logical thinking. But it takes time to translate the logic from a game to real-life situations. But it can possibly be done. 🙂

Chess is a good hobby and it seems you really love it; It's good to keep the mind sharp and to help problem-solving. I play myself actually, but not well. I know the moves and some basic strategy but am certainly not good at it.

You should do a post or two about your chess playing.

Thanks for joining in this week and I hope you will come back again.

!ENGAGE 50

Yours is better than mine, I'm worse at chess 🤔 but I may be lucky if we both play I may win you😛

Yeah, you'll probably win if you played me at chess; It's not my thing really.

I like chess for maybe one and a half matches then I get bored and give up. Or I get frustrated that I'm not winning and give up sooner lol

In this case then I'll have to play you the second game...That'll give me a better chance to win!

The problem-solving part of it really gets me hooked with chess. I guess I was born to solve puzzles. Hahaha! I also like helping others find solutions to their problems. I find pleasure in such activities. We used to only solve simpler and easier problems in the past. But as we grow, we learn new things along the way and get creative on solving many complicated problems. As Einstein had put it, "we cannot solve a problem in the same thinking that we made it." We can either get help from others or try to think harder. I usually go with the first one. 😄 As a result, I then enjoy watching annotated games and tutorial videos, as well as reading instructional books and reviews, and much more, to learn more and be able to solve more difficult problems in the future. 🙂

Sure, I'd love to share more about chess. Even Netflix has this miniseries named "The Queen's Gambit," most probably to promote awareness of the game of chess. 🙂

Yup! I also find it fun for joining. Thanks for inviting me.

I really think you should do a few posts around chess. I mean it's a game that has been around so long and has a massive following around the world, there must be a few here that are interested; I guess even if they are not, it will be good for you to share your passion and enjoyment; That's what hive is all about after all.

Holy shit, I spend more time than that thinking about a single move in chess! I'm going to have to investigate this bullet chess, it could be interesting. @dandays do you dabble in this too?

I have dude. To each their own, I honestly don't see much skill in bullet games. In my opinion, which matters to me and me only, it has to be at least 5 minutes.

Thanks calling me over here man, Ima drop this player a line.

1800 ain't no joke though, that's some gangster shit! I mighta reached 1800 once or twice, my average is a low 16, somewhere between 1550 and 1650. 1800 is gangster shit.

Damn, I'm unfamiliar with all that, my chess playing was never that organized.

I ain't buying it. I think you're slow playing me.

Nope, I save that for card games.

1800 hundred range?! Got dang! I think I caught 1800 one time, maybe, probably not. A 17-18 average, though, that's impressive. I'm a low 16.

Played plenty of bullet games. I think they ruin my 10 minute games, you agree? Do 1 minute games effect the way you focus on 5 or 10 minute games?

I am down at high 17 as of this moment. I played slowly and had some losing streak. I was actually just high 15 last week. I'm not so sure what happened to my brain to get me to my current rating. 😅

Yes, they kinda actually affect my thinking in longer format games. Though I cannot really tell because I only play 3 minutes, and now bullet. I think getting creative in the bullet games can actually make you more creative in longer games. Bullet also improves your opening repertoire since it's like you're performing the spaced repetition system method in memorizing things. By playing more games in short amounts of time, I think (I'm actually realizing it now), the opening moves you found to fit your style, get more glued to your system. But I guess I should try playing 10-minute games to really know for sure. 🤔

One minute matches? That makes my head hurt. Seriously. I wouldn't know whether to scratch my watch or wind my ass.

That's just amazing to me.

I actually even saw people play under 30 seconds! That is so sick! 😆 What even astound me is that some even "Berserk," which sacrifices half of their time even further to gain more win points in online tournaments. You could watch this YouTuber named Eric Rosen and look for his "Chess. Rain. Relaxation." video where I don't know if it will still hurt your head or help you relax with his choice of background music. 😆

I knew a Vietnamese guy that got here with the boat people. His parents were killed in the war and he was raised in a Buddhist Monastery. Was a prodigy and encouraged by the Monks. I knew him when he was in his 20s and he would play up to 20 people at a time in exhibitions. It was amazing. But I can't even imagine him at 1 minute games.

Oh wow, that was really amazing. On the other hand, I can't imagine myself playing simultaneous games just yet. I could try perhaps, but the outcome might not be the same. But what I can tell based on his story is, by having been raised by the Monks, for sure he has vast wisdom and that may have enhanced his innate chess skills.

Oh chess makes my heart hurt. My father forced my to learn at around age 5 and despite now being a VERY GOOD chess player, I find nothing relaxing about it. I appreciate the strategy I learned through it though.

!ENGAGE 15

In some way, I guess every game (chess or not) could actually be stressful at times. I had this conversation with @nightcorevids last night while she plays Axie Infinity. And she told me the game gets a little bit stressful for her at some point because of the efforts she exerted only to lose in a battle. But it is part of the game. We cannot always win. And what I've learned from playing thousands of chess games is that there is always an opportunity to learn something new, may it be after a win or a lost game. And I'm glad we share a similar appreciation for the strategies we are learning from this game of chess.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I tried playing chess with my friends but they usually win, chess is not my game but i enjoy watching people play

Oh we've got a similarity 🙂 I also tried playing games like the famous Mobile Legends and Among Us, but I am still figuring out how to get through the games. In the end, I just chose to just enjoy watching my friends and brothers play such games. And they are really good. 🙂

Yeah, not sure if you have older brothers or if you're the older brother but the younger brother syndrome is you end up watching your older brother play. That's how it unfortunately works but sometimes it's cool lol

In my case, I watch my two younger brothers play. Hahaha!

Aww, all my brothers really like this game 🙂. I used to play few time when childhood (not as good as my brothers 🤣) but couldnt remember how to play now. You must be smart and have a good memories 🙂. Really impressive hobby :))

Oh, now your brothers and I have a topic to talk about 😊 I remember still playing with my father during the weekends in my childhood days. I usually lose in our games, but after a few games, my father would get tired and lose for me. 😆

At some point in time, we really just forget things when we stopped doing or recalling them. I also used to play other board games like the Game of the Generals, and Monopoly but can't play them anymore. But I guess if we got our memories refreshed, I believe we can get back to playing our forgotten games once again. 😊

I saw you have a lot of hobbies. 🙂 I also really like reading but somehow I can't find time to turn pages now as I got into writing. I have a small library here at home with books, mostly instructional ones and self-help:

img_0.31758160618004094.jpg

Right now, I currently have my favorite book at my friend's but I highly recommend the book Five Love Language by Gary Chapman. 😊

Na you getting smarter so you won over your father haha. Wow you know you have a great library 📚 📖 much better than me. You seem a cool boy
Aww salamat for recommendation, highly appreciated it. I will check it out when I have spare time. Your writing very good, keep up the good work. Hope to see you around
🌺😍

Hopefully, we can play again even just in my dreams. Since it's just the only way we could play together now. :) And oh, thanks. Those are the books I have read when the Internet was still not a thing here at home. 😄
Salamat, as well, for your compliments. Hope to see you around, too. Keep safe! 🙂

Chess is one of those things people expect you to do because allegedlyyou are smart, you try, and fail miserably. One of my daughters, though, learned on her own and was pretty good at it without even trying hard.
I admire people who can play it. I just can't. Too many things to considered in record time.

Perhaps that is the reason, too, why my mom decided to gift me one of those cute magnetic chess sets when I was a kid. My parents might have thought I was really good in the maths so I might as well play games in those lines. 😆 But that is true, there are surprisingly really good players without training or anything. I, on the other hand, took quite a while to consider myself "good" at chess. I still have a lot of room for improvement. But what's important is, as a hobby, I really find this fun and really enjoyable to play. 🙂

Glad you stopped by, I used to play chess as a kid, but then slowly it faded, even had a chess game on my First computer I think it was Battle Chess with dragon and dungeon type pieces as an option.

I also once stopped playing chess, especially when I started learning that there are people who could unscramble the Rubik's cube in less than 20 seconds. So I also got into that. 😆 But anyway, I never had the chance to play Battle Chess. But those pieces/characters sound cool!

On the other hand, I was able to purchase Chessmaster 9000 as a kid, and eventually upgrade to Chessmaster 10th Edition. Those programs helped me understand the essential concepts in chess, like pins, forks, discovered attacks, and much more. But it really takes playing and analyzing (this is important) lots and lots of games to really improve our skills in chess, whether we win or lose. 🙂

I could never quite wrap my playing around the en-passant move for pawns, it just made no since to me even after years of playing.

Man, that's awesome. Chess is a lot of fun but I don't know if I could handle the 3 minute or 1 minute games. I can barely play a game of chess in 30 minutes never mind 1 LOL. That's great though, chess and things like that are excellent for our brains and our thinking. I'm glad that you enjoy it and do it as a hobby, hobbies come in all shapes and sizes so it's important you have them!

Hey, thanks! :) They say our brains are also muscles that need working out. I'm sure you also have your own way(s) of getting yours all pumped up and improving. And I hope to hear about them any time soon. See you around! 🙂

This is impressive! I've been playing chess a few times this year but not enough to do this, this reminds me my obsession with my Rubik's cube! This is definitely a good hobby

Oh my, did you just say Rubik's cube? 'Cause I also get my hands on it every once in a while. Like I actually have it right on my desk - getting scrambled and unscrambled a couple of times a day. 😃

That is an amazing game of chess to have to make your move in 1 minute. So, my understanding is that you're pitted against another chess player online, or against the software?

Yes, I play with other players online. And that also fascinates my mom whenever she sees me play. :)

What I love from chess is the multiple options you have to enjoy your hobby online. It is lovely to be able to play against opponents from all over the world and learn together.

That is exactly true. I used to play with a computer and bots to imitate other player's playing styles. But playing with another actual person online makes the game more enjoyable to play. Funny enough, I also enjoy it when some players send me trash talks during the game. 😂

Well I do have a lot of hobbies, but what fills my soul is adventure, I am a girl who loves to explore a lot and experience sensations. It has been like this since I was very young, one of the things I do constantly is hike to stay connected with nature to breathe and feel free

I have done a few interesting thing, recently I did paragliding ;)

G0010472-01.jpeg

And my recent hobby is MakeUp is what I'm doing for hive now, I try to do something "artistic" with my face ;)

IMG_20201105_135344_035.jpg

Now THAT's a contrast - paragliding and make up. 🤣

How have you managed during the Covid stay at home time? Or is that where the makeup passion grew?

!ENGAGE 15

Exactly makeup grew there with covid! I wasn't much into makeup before it wasn't my thing but look at me now, lol

It looks like you had fun paragliding; I've heard it's enjoyable and by the look of the picture you had some good scenery to look at on the way down too.

It's good to have many interests and as you get older those interests will develop, fall away and new ones will take their place. That's how it should be. Life ebbs and flows and we have to be fluid, to move with it.

Thanks for joining in.

It was nice and amazing, view was stunning, I felt like a bird. I'm doing what I love and I try to be fluid with life no forcing things

Heck of a topic.. check out these comments

I try to come up with things that people can relate to. :)

I like hiking, too. My fair weather (summer) motorcycle boots are also decent hiking boots so I can check stuff out. My foul weather boots are hard to walk in but keep my feeties warm and dry.

I've done a little para sailing on the Columbia River-A friend has a rig and a boat to pull it with. Pretty exciting stuff....

The makeup just astounds me. Just an incredible thing to do...

I used to have an amazing boots and I used my boots all the time, like all the time and were still good but I left them at my mother's house 2 years ago and I know she started using my boots too hahaha!!

Oh, parasailing here it's very far away! mostly on the islands they do these activities, last year I had planned a trip but it was ruined!! But it's on my list !!

Well, at least my mother never stole my boots :) I have a pair of hikers that I wear around here that are pretty darn comfy too.

You have a good mother!! She knows about respect hahahaha oh my!! But yeah boots are comfortable 😍 they can look like so rude but still comfy!

Wow, you have achieved well amazing hikings, love your photos and views. Paragliding seems very cool, the view from above is spectacular huh, the loop awsomee reminds me of Ha Giang loop here in Vietnam

hg10.jpg

Your make so fancy, Great hobbies

Oh looks very similar, so lovely view 😍 God! I'm in love with nature environments! Your photo is spectacular, nature is quite sometime divine!!

Hey @josehany, thanks for engaging. I'm glad you eenjoy my pictures. Yea nature is amazing, If we look for beauty...we can find it in nature 💖

That's right! I would like to have a good camera! Then it would be my camera, me and nature ;)

That looks amazing and fun. I have never done any flying except on planes. I hope to do some paragliding or anything similar before I die. It feels great to see the world from above.
I have climbed some average size hills around my area. Nothing spectacular, but it feels good to be in contact with nature (as long as one has all the supplies and plenty of water).

Oh I did climb too, it's amazing!! All natural environments are so great and refreshing. Haha you have to try paragliding it's amazing, not scary at all

Yours hobbies are amazing, you have gone to some nice places. I would love to visit some places of that nature, it would really be a dream come true

Some day!!! Yes I have gone to some amazing places and others that I don't have photos 😭😭 but I've been seeing the beauty of the world, there's no other place that I would like to be, just with nature

It's really amazing, you are lucky to easily find such places. I just wish I could come over

Not sure if I will ever go paragliding or not, I kind of see that like I do Bridge Bungee Jumping. I'm just not much of a thrill/adrenaline seeker any more. I prefer the more sedate type of hobby lately, but as we age our desires, (or bodies), change a little bit.

Hahaha oh myyy! I was about to do some bridge bungee this week but I couldn't I need to spend my money in another stuff. But ... In my experience paragliding wasn't sooo extreme, it was relaxing, at least for me

!ENGAGE 25

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Tough to pick a favorite. Probably the very first one. Did I see the make-up feature on one of the curators features recently? I'm pretty sure I did.

It's difficult to choose, yeah, favoritism isn't my thing haha. And about the makeup, probably I don't remember very well it could be ;)

Paragliding looks like fun. Do you go by yourself or with a group of friends or a club? I have to admit I have vertigo, so anything rolling around on the ground will be a good hobby for me. Hiking is a nice hobby. I can tell from the photos you are adventerous. Keep having fun, and stay safe.

It was by myself ;) was an special reservation for me, I don't like being around many people specially when I'm trying to relax and connect

I'm jealous, I've always wanted to try paragliding. Love the photos, what mountains are those that you are hiking in?

I don't remember the first one, it's a bit far away and the other Waraira repano in Caracas

I've had to add Waraira Repano to my list of places to visit, it looks and sounds lovely. Do you visit there often?

Veryyyyyy often

IMG_20201106_225555.png

It's amazing! I do have a hiking route, my route at the beginning the first one took me 8 hours, then I followed the same route for some time and started doing it in 6 hours and then in 5 hours with a quick step without making many stops only if a needed, this was just to test the time of arrival but the best thing is when you go for pleasure and you stop to enjoy the view, the best thing is that you can also camp

Btw that building over there was the goal ;)

Damn, that's lovely. I always take forever on trails because I'm stopping to take photos, that's a hell of an improvement on times. I don't see how you could visit a place like that and not camp :)

Hahahaha now I'm just enjoying the view ;) it's lovely yes, at that point I was 3/4 of the goal, I had already walking a lot, and everything was uphill, from this part came the comfort, everything more smoother.

I have been by the lovely @trangbaby she has put me in the spotlight and how could i refuse well here we go , i have never been one to talk about my adventures or hobbies i "Just do it" as the Nike label says i can say i have many hobbies but i regard them as been part of my everyday ritual routines that you don't even realize your doing but one thing i can say i am not a indoor hobby man get me away from computers games and computers i am far from any high tech person just the basics are fine for me get me on the outdoors and i turn into a adventurous machine jogging , hiking , walking , swimming and the list will go on with outdoor activities but apart from all that there is a hobby that i really like doing which is combined with outdoor and indoor and that would be growing and taking care of my herbs and veggies , i just love seeing my own cultivated herbs and veggies growing with a couple of rose flower bushes amongst them just to give the garden a bit more aroma here we have Rosemary , Italian Basil , Mint and Tomatoes and i do have many more herbs and veggies in my garden these are just a few.

weekend_engage..jpg

weekend_engage.jpg

weekend_engage_2_.jpg

And this is the best part of growing my own herbs and veggies it gives me the one indoor hobby that i love doing apart from all my outdoor hobbies this indoor indoor hobby has become a every Sunday ritual , i kick my wife out of the kitchen tell her to go to her painting room and do not disturb me and i get on making Sunday dinner which could be Pizzas , Lasagna or different Pasties with all my fresh veggies and herbs that i nurse daily in my veggie garden that's the advantage of having Italian background my mum taught me well i love my mum dearly ♥️ If anyone needs a yummy Pizza , Lasagna or Pasta made with all my fresh veggies and herbs my wife will hire me out for a small fee but only to cook for you...lol 🤣

weekend_engage_3_.jpg

My mate looking on so he can get some tips on going home to try and impress his wife 🤣
weekend_engage_4_.jpg

Your herbs look sooooo good! Now why do I suddenly want to make PESTO??!! LOL. There is truly nothing better than growing herbs and then adding them fresh to your home-made goodies.

I suddenly inspired to cook!!

!ENGAGE 15

Thank you @artemislives the fresh herbs from my garden always seem to inspire me to cook and pesto sounds good my mum makes a lot of that i always borrow it from mum as it taste better the way she makes it definitely has that Italian taste and smell 👍

It's good to be able to combine one hobby with the other, growing herbs and cooking with them. They then combine with a hobby I find particularly enjoyable...Eating!

That last picture...You mate looks like the pastry is about to jump up and bite him! Lol. What are you making there, ravioli?

Yep i found that very efficient and worked well together like you i love eating especially when you have made it yourself from your own garden....

Haha , a couple times the pastry has split and hit him in the face so he has learnt his lesson and stands back now he doesn't want to become part of the ravioli and you guessed it right ravioli with minced beef and veggies one of my favorites to make.

I love me some rav's man...Home made ones especially!

I have a mate who holds to the old ways and we go over and help do stuff, olives, the pig (sausages), sauce etc...The reward is big cook ups and some raucous gatherings. Italian is my favourite food!

There is a lot of work in preparing the pasta and noddles as you would know but there is nothing more satisfying to see the smiles and expressions on your friends faces as there biting into those pizzas it's just priceless that's what makes me enjoy my hobby more ☺️

I think there's something very enjoyable about preparing food with friends. Every now and then we have a few friends over and we all prepare the food together...We all sort of feel more invested in the meal I think. So much fun.

That is so true us Aussie's know how to enjoy out foods around friends with a few beers and this is some thing we also do a lot sharing ideas makes it all more enjoyable. This was a great topic i enjoyed sharing this with you all have a great week ahead @galenkp 👍

Thank you @kohsamui99, I highly appreciated it..I know exactly why I’d invite you join me. We have many common interests: jogging , hiking , walking , swimming, etc ...hahaaa!!! I am not actually good with computers and technology. I used to work in the office for a couple of years but I just spent maximum 30 mins sitting in front of computer 😁😅. Since I joined Hive , I have found myself more patient to work with a computer few hours, much better 😊😂 Because I’m learning more about writing, and in English it takes me a bit long to finish my post every time 😃. Wow, I know you love veggies & fruit so not so surprised where there many Rosemary , Italian Basil , Mint and Tomatoes and herbs in your garden, I like them all. And I understand how good when your effort paid off by using all your plants for making dinner 🥘....Can’t wait to see your yummy Pizza , Lasagna or Pasta recipes 🤪🤩You are damn good at everything huh, taking photos, cooking, drawing, veggies & fruit ...;)

Awwww... thank you for you kind words you are giving me a head swell now i do try my best at getting it done better 🤓it seems we do have a lot of things in common i like to try different things if you don't succeed first time we try again , you are pretty good at what you do also and with English been your second language you are producing very nice work it can be very challenging but i see you are not one to give up so easily even if it takes you a little longer the outcome of the results will make you stronger.

This is a meter long pizza i made last weekend for our Halloween pizza night party one that was enjoyed by all...

weekend_engage_5_.jpg

Besides selling veggies and fruit, do you think you will opens pizza shop. Your pizza looks delicious and amazing. I'd like to order Hawaian Pizza L size, please

Na i will just stick with my daily job i just love making pizzas for pizza party nights to share with friends when you visit Oz we will invite you over for pizza night i will make you a Hawaiian Pizza at any size you like 👍

Aww you are sweet. Sure, NWS & Queensland will be my pick destinations in Oz. Can't wait to eat your delicious pizza 🍕

Your welcome @trangbaby hopefully you can start your traveling destination again soon we are all missing it at the moment.

Not much gardening for me, the weather just isn't kind to gardens here. I've actually considered one of those indoor herb systems so I'd have fresh basil and cilantro as needed.

That's some fine looking pizza and pasta. Your noodle cutter looks a lot like the one my grandmother had. Woman could make some noodles to die for...

Ahhh...that's a shame maybe you should consider one of them indoor herb systems there is nothing better then fresh herbs from your own garden.

Yep my Italian mum taught me well in growing veggies and herbs and making pizzas and pastas i am glad to have got this knowledge from her , she is the best ☺️

My mom taught all 3 of us boys (and our sisters) how to cook. It's a skill that I have used my whole life and I'm really thankful for it. All three of us took to it and became good cooks in our own right. My kid brother and I have some sort of unofficial cooking competition every summer featuring what we've picked up during the year. His wife ALWAYS likes it :) And for the record, my sisters are no better than adequate in the kitchen...

We got to love our mom's for passing on that talent to us and that we had the patients to sit by and take it all in certainly makes us proud to dish up a great meal for our friends night and ourselves it just makes it interesting and worthwhile all round 👍

Wow! You are a definitely cool person!!! I want that pasta I'm a pasta lover!! So you have such an amazing hobbies, I'm into fardening a bit too, I do have a tomato plant as well, its my precious baby right now

Thanks @josehany nothing better then making your own fresh pasta and topping it up with all them fresh veggies and herbs i really do enjoy doing this treat for myself and my friends 👍 Nice to see you have a passion for tomatoes ☺️

Growing your own herbs and veggies is great. Is your garden large in a greenhouse? And then cooks also with the herbs and veggies you grow. This has to be a passion. Thanks for sharing.

Hi @justclickindiva no i don't grow my herbs and veggie in a greenhouse just out in my backyard under a big old tree it is a passion of my as we use a lot of herbs with our cooking and making pizzas it always handy to have your own fresh herbs at your doorstep ☺️

Me...I'll be pushing the order button tomorrow. I am going to take some time over the winter to semi sort of travel back in time...almost 40 years ago. 1980 or close to that time frame was my introduction to computers, real computers, in the form of a Radio Shack TRS-80 Color Computer. It was basically a really think fat keyboard with about 2 in square half inch thick game/program cartridges. It came with a table top style book with some basic instructions on how to do some simple programming. The disk drive was a regular off the self nothing special cassette recorder player.

TRS-80 Color Computer 1 4x3

So in the morning I will be pushing the button on a Raspberry-Pi keyboard kit. It has been a long time since I did any tinkering with computer stuff, mostly just buying and using and not doing any real learning lately other than how to use a spreadsheet. I have seen a lot of post by people doing things with the Raspberry-Pi's and some of it looked interesting, and this may help me learn a little bit of programming and maybe wean me off of using Microsoft. I really do not want to go the windows 10 route, even though I have with my laptop, but it has not been connected to the internet since it's initial set-up.

If nothing else it will help relieve the winter it's to damn cold outside blues, and maybe prevent blue toe syndrome.

The new Pi400 is a game-changer in personal mini computers. The idea to put everything inside the keyboard is a great one and adding extra processor speed and memory makes the little toy into something quite powerful. I entered this world a few years ago with my first Arduino when I decided to attend a two-hour course, then I got a Pi3B and a kit that I used to play around with some electronic experiments using sensors and relays. I think is a great mini-computer to play around with, as you can learn about a bunch of different things, be it coding, or hacking some projects, but even if you just want an extra computer it's worth the purchase. I am thinking of getting one to create a Bitcoin node and experiment with it.

image.png

I'm not much into computers but I'm into not being cluelesseither so I'll have to do some research and find out what this is all about. Sounds interesting.

And if I run into problems there are a lot of people on Hive that are playing around with the Raspberry-Pi, so un like my first computer I should be able to find help a little bit easier.

That is for sure!

Wow! That will be really great, at least you will put me through. 🙄

Ooooh a tech person - you have my respect! For me it' functional only and the LAST thing I enjoy in my downtime. LOL. Always a chore to manage updates and "stuff".

It's an incredible skill to be good with machines and gadgets though.... Good on you!

!ENGAGE 15

Not really a tech guy, but I am going to try to pretend to be one for a hobby. LoL I've been wanting to build a computer for a while now, but that is expensive to do, so a cheap one to learn some programming on with out having to worry about my big machine.

Pretending is good... fake it till you make it and all that. But actually PLAYING is a serious step towards creating an inventing.

Enjoy the tinkering and make sure you have good light and a good chair. 😊

This seems like a good use of time and certainly something that will keep the old noggin ticking over.

My first computer was an Amiga 500, and nope I couldn't afford the 500Kb RAM upgrade. Lol. I didn't do much with it to be honest as computers weren't that interesting to me then, or really now for that matter.

I've not heard of a Raspberry Pi to be honest, but twiddling around with computers is sure likely to get you through those cold winter days.

I hope you have time to keep us up to date with how you're going.

Legit hobby. Thanks for joining in.

I bought my first computer, an Epson Equity 2 in 1980. I missed the entire Tandy/Radio Shack/Amiga movement. Probably to my detriment, because I didn't learn any programming skills for years and am still miles behind my peers.

I did learn to kick software around, and I'm a filing wizard due to thousands of floppy discs. I learned DOS commands and Basic commands and so MS DOS wasn't a big mystery to me.

But the Raspberry Pi has caught my eye for quite sometime, too. I'll look for your updates and stories in the near future. I don't use Microsoft anymore, I'm all Linux all the time. In fact, my laptop has never had MS on it, I ordered it blank.

If nothing else it will help relieve the winter it's to damn cold outside blues, and maybe prevent blue toe syndrome.

I get it. I'll probably wait until July to seriously consider a Raspberry Pi!

I have been wanting to move away from MS and Google for some time, so I am hoping that I will be able to learn enough with the Rasp-Pi that I can start the move. But it has been a long time since doing any computer config files to get things to work, and it seems that everything boots from the memory cards, so that should make experimenting a lot less risky.

Moved to Linux in 2012. Best move I ever made computer wise.

All 5 of mine are Bill Gates Spyware free... Lmao

Only pewter we have with that virus ridden corrupt code on it is @pooky-jax's laptop. She has to keep that bloatware on hers for her work. And Microsloth Windblows constantly reminds us how much better Linux really is.

I am hoping to use it to try and experiment with a few different systems. I was one of the few people that like OS2 Warp. It is actually still somewhat available.

I started with Linux Lite. It is still my go to. I have different versions of it on my 3 laptops. Cinnamon is the best overall in my opinion. I have messed with 10 or 12 different Linux Distros.

I'm just an Ubuntu guy, have been since '12. I've gotten real used to it and not particularly interested in any other. It's one of those "If it works, don't fix it" situations.

OMG! How I wish I had an idea on this, I think I am really lacking behind. 😞

I’m not good at computer or technology 😊 and don't even understand what Raspberry-Pi is 😃 I think I should learn more about those things...hehee :)) Thank you for sharing something new( for me)

#raspberrypi is the tag a lot of people use, there is even a Raspberry-Pi Community on Hive, so I hope I will be able to get some help if needed learning to use it. A small community but still a small group that will be helpful I am sure.

Thank you :)) I will check it out 🙂

Wow! I don't think at that time my parents had thought of given birth to me. It's a very good idea most expecially now you know how to go about it and what it will help you prevent. 🙄😁

Ohhh I also want to learn a bit about programming and I agree with you about that w10... Personally I don't like it

Who knows one day I may be a python guru, that is one of the languages that Raspberry PI supports, so it could be fun, I guess I will see if my brain has the patient for it in a few months.

It will! Be positive ! I'm going to learn too and then we can share our knowledge together haha

That's one of my aspiration last year but I couldn't follow it up. Go for it

I like w10, its w8 I don't like

Ah I remember the first computer I ever touched, I believe the name of it was Kalekiovision or something of the sort. I could be totally off base on that, I'll have to look it up but my friends dad fixed computers and this was one of his relics that he let us play with and we had such a fun time with it.

Eventually I'll get into the raspberry Pi game, it looks like a lot of people are having some fun with it and they are pretty versatile. Hopefully I can spend some time dedicating to learning how to operate one after the holidays, I might need something fun to do!

It seems every couple of years I need to add something new to do in the winter, and I thought it would be fun.

Wow, Radio Shack. Now that's going back a while to that particular computer. I thought those guys had gone out of business a few years ago?

I had to check, there are still about 400 stores open according to a quick google search, they still have a web page, but I am not sure if they are out of bankruptcy yet.

I think I can add a check to each of those on that extensive list of hobbies you mentioned. Traveling, cycling, German Shepherds, I love GSD's dude, they're my next phase in this life actually--breed my own line.

I also enjoy scuba diving. I had to load this clip to YouTube just now to share it here, #weekend-engagement is a good place to do that. It's a quick 3 minutes with a world of underwater life--enjoy!

(If you listen closely, you can hear my muffled attempt at directing the jelly fish anywhere other than my direction)

Holy Moly! That's like diving in an aquarium. Lots of really interesting fishies.

I dove just a little when I was in and just out of HS. The water where I grew up is pretty uniformly cold, it wasn't as much fun as it could have been.

One of my besties was a hard hat diver in the Navy for over 20 years. He tells some amazing stories of both diving AND liberty call :)

Oh man it's such a comfortable place to be. In Laguna Beach I've been in school of tuna probably 3' long but way to many hundred Ed of them to count. Good times down there, Catalina Island, too, saw a sea turtle down there once, biggest I've ever seen, thing was the size of a tailgate.

Don't you miss that weightlessness feeling? I can't get enough of it.

That clip I shared was a reef in shallow water, not anything big but lots of little guys.

Yeah, I do miss the weightless feeling. I sorta got to a place where I had to choose between diving and riding. I don't regret my choice at all...

My buddy tells lots of 'training dive' stories about Catalina and the piers at San Diego. Langusta. Lots of them :)

I've never scuba dived but have snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef a few times, some 40km off shore. It's amazing...Clear vision for 40-50 metres and so much vibrant colours and animals. It's amazing.

What I like about what I've read so far is that so many people have hobbies that are so vastly different; I mean the individual. Scuba, bikes, dog breeding and travel in your case for instance. It's how I am also.

I had someone on hive sort of pigeon hole me as a gun person a few weeks ago...It's so incorrect though, I'm many different versions of myself and have so many hobbies and interests, to say I'm all about one is the very worst way to describe me. I like that may people are saying similar - It shows a diversity of character in people, which is good.

I've been hearing about the Great Barrier Reef my whole life. One of these days. One of these days.

It's next level...I mean literally off the chain.

My brother is heading to Airlie Beach from Cairns, where he lives, as I type this - He rented a sail boat and is spending the next week sailing the Whitsunday Islands and Barrier Reef. Good work if you can get it.

You need to make the effort and will not regret it.

What's the stay there, wait.. let me rephrase that....

When travel is back to normal, are you aware of the length my passport would be good there? Is it 90 days? And Pura's dual citizen, would her British passport only grant us the same 90?

👍🏿

Oh dayum! This just got interesting. Thanks for that link. I got another one then. Is there a preferred time of year for best visibility at The Reef?

I came over here cuz dudes new and I don't feel like explaining it to him. You're gonna love this.
(that just happened)

Traveling, cycling, dogs, scuba - I love the sound of ACTIVE I'm hearing here!

So what do you do when it's raining? Or when you've been stuck inside with Covid Quarantine?? Curious how the very active handle downtime when travel & outside is limited.

!ENGAGE 15

Not bad hobbies to have right? I'm The Luckiest Guy I Know.

Rain kinda negates everything--dinner date, car ride, etc. especially bicycles. Just gotta wait the rain out, it's a pretty unforgiving nature.

We only had to Quarantine once. When we were in England, we were locked down (they're still locked down). So we left.

Stateside, its business as usual here--pubs, gyms, restaurants, bike trails, gun shows (we went to a gun show and shooting range yesterday) etc. everything is open over here--'quarantine shwarantine'.

Tough to have hobbies and stay active when the powers that be enforce their will on us. Fortunately, we haven't had to deal with any of it since they kicked my American passport tf outta Europe.

What about where you are, they still being weird about Covid in Thailand? Over here in the US, they've reopened NFL stadiums to maximum capacity and musicians have began touring again.

Is Thailand still being weird about Covid? Define weird. 😆 WE have no covid, very few places requiring masks and people getting on with life just fine. Borders remain pretty tightly enclosed unless you have a long term visa, money and are prepared to do the Q. Let's just politely say ain't no broke-ass digital nomads coming to the Land of Smiles anytime soon, and the US passport is at the almost-bottom of every immigration official's list. We've had only 60 deaths total out of 70 million and have first batches of bubble-country tourists starting: China, Finland, New Zealand, Vietnam and South Korea. It's as much about containing the negative western narrative as it is about any virus. Asia is becoming Asian again.

Uhm alright. I'd be lying if I didn't say:
I can feel the tension you have toward someone who has no control over the ground they're birthed on.

One of the sweetest people my wife and I had the pleasure of meeting while being broke-ass digital nomads was a young lady from Thailand. She was touring with another young woman from South Korea--likely another pair of broke-ass digital nomads (probably why we got along so well).

We were at a cooking class in Rome, thankfully.. you know, being so broke and all. She was real sweet, we got along great and exchanged emails and WhatsApp info--we still keep in touch regularly and they're planning on paying us a visit in this negative western narrative as soon as this (whatever 'this' is) goes away but we got along exceptionally well so our door is always open.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend @artemislives.

Let's just politely say ain't no broke-ass digital nomads coming to the Land of Smiles anytime soon, and the US passport is at the almost-bottom of every immigration official's list.

We (the US) notched over 100,000 cases yesterday and for several days in a row now. Our death rate is under 1% but that's still 1000 people that will die in the next three weeks. From yesterday. Sigh. It looks like the Feds are actually looking for herd immunity. It will take a minimum of 200,000 total deaths to get there.

So I understand why the US passport is the bottom. Makes perfect sense to me.

Cardinal Stadium isn't at full capacity. Last week they let 1200 in and this week it's 2500. Over 60,000 short.

We in Arizona casualed the first wave and got hit pretty hard. The state is being WAY more restrictive this time. Masks are required.

I haven't spent a fraction of a second indulging in NFL since the first quarter of the 2016 super bowl.

My buddy here in Tennessee just told me a few weeks ago the Dolphins opened their stadium to full capacity. I didn't think to fact check him.

It's hit and miss here depending which street corner you're facing--mask, no mask. On Halloween here they hosted a country concert at full capacity and the headliner was Trace Adkins.

I have my own opinions on the whole thing but to attempt justifying them would be equal to judging someone else's opinion when, at the end of the day, I'm as much of a scientist as I am a judge. 👍🏿

at the end of the day, I'm as much of a scientist as I am a judge.

Nicely said. I wear a mask when I'm in public. I don't particularly want the virus but even more I don't want to pass it on. It's like holding a door for a stranger for me. Government mandates don't enter in for me.

The Dolphins are going to play in front of a lot less than capacity today :)

We have common hobbies: traveling and scuba diving ( heheee everyone’s hobbies )

Hey wassup @trangbaby? You know what I mean then when I say it's the only way to experience that 'weightlessness' feeling.

Hey wassup wassup man 🤣🤣

Oh god I want to do scuba so bad!! It is on my list of things to do ;)

It's an experience @josehany. And the license is good for life so you can dive anywhere and everywhere. Worth the investment a bajillion times over.

I know I'm going to do that someday, I'm pretty sure ;)

nice clip

Hey thanks @diverrat. I'm glad you liked it.

Pretty cool video, it was a lot more noisy under than what I was expecting, you must have a nice camera to get all the nice pictures and the sound.

GoPro Hero 5 Black. The thing's pretty incredible. If I don't have the camera on an extension from my hand, you can hear me breathing in the regulator.

And it's durable-durable-durable! I can't tell you how many times I've dropped it. Works like a champ!

My wife has been wanting one of those, maybe next year. But then I'd want a drone, and then I would like crash, and then my wife would be rally ticked-off, but what the hell, if she still wants one we may end up getting one.

The scenario you just played out doesn't sound bad at all. And it has a crash landing! ithink you're ready for the big screen.

This is really an interesting hubby I would love to try out one day, I'm only scared of sharks, sea snakes and crocodile. Those are the only thing that can stop me

Crocodiles, yeah I'll steer clear from those. All other sea life, though, you'd be surprised. Something about that regulator in your mouth and the sea life are just interested in you. Nothing to be scared of, it's exciting.

I know its exciting, I will love to try it out

Take pictures when you do, tell us all about it. 👍🏿

Well my long term hobby has been computers/electronics. Here is a picture of a project I am about to start. A robot controlled by a Raspberry Pi (I have 13).
20201106_002200.jpg
I am also getting into a new hobby for me Ham Radio.
20201105_183853.jpg
My elmer ( ham radio mentor) is coming over this afternoon to help with tuning my antenna that I just put up.

Robotics has been one of the things I wished I tried to already start learning. I once had a girlfriend who competes in robotics contests and as far as I can remember, she and her team managed to win some contests before. They used Lego for their robots.

On the other hand, the nearest I made towards robotics was just while playing with K'nex where we can assemble a body of movable parts, and have the parts move using its included machine. It provides 2 axes of rotation that when utilized, could give some action to your "robot." It was a fun experience. I still have my K'nex pieces. But I don't have anything built with them now except for this custom laptop stand I made for my younger brother. 😄

What can be cooler than creating robots. As a kid I also collected action figures and the idea of robbots was still a futuristic, far, far away possibility. Now it is all over and I just envy those who understand enough about electronics and programming as to create their own machines. It's just fantastic

Haha... your name on Hive was a bit of a clue! 🤣 Serious respect to gadget people and tinkerers, for surely you are the inventors, the fixers and the "what if?" people.

!ENGAGE 15

Thanks, most probably do not get the meaning. I had to shorten it as the full length (My Technology Trail) was too long.

Wow. A robotics project with a Pi? That's some cool stuff.

And Ham. I have a couple of good friends that are HAM operators. One is just about completely blind so the radio truly is his friend. His seeing eye dog Lucy is a good friend of my Sam :)

Thanks, I am going to do a series of posts showing the build and the programming of the robot.

I've been looking to getting into radio over the last year or so, from a communications/preparedness aspect mainly, but also for fun. I think it's good to combine enjoyment and practicality ion hobbies when I can. It's a fairly deep hole to delve into I've been told, but it's something I'd like to do. So many things, so little time.

I knew you did robotics stuff...That's cool too. Sometimes I watch a show on TV called Battle Bots which is a whole lot of really smart robotics and engineering people building machines designed to kill each other. Most are sponsored by robotics, engineering, aerospace, computer and associated companies including universities. It's all about showy as far as a TV show, but there's some pretty interesting stuff on the show. I'd like to do that, but I'm not that smart.

Check into whether there are any Ham Radio clubs in your city. When I moved to London, in 2019 I had been thinking of getting into Ham Radio for many years. Years ago you were required to learn morse code and I was not interested in code. Closer to 2019 I heard that code was no longer required and my brother who was a Ham gave me a handheld Ham Radio and I brought it to London, so I was browsing around the web one night and discovered LARC (London Amateur Radio Club) had a club and web site. I then saw they were holding a class for training for the exam a couple months later. I took the plunge and signed up and passed the exam on the last session. After getting my License VE3YRG I was able to join in on the Tuesday night 2M elmer net. A group of us noobs listen to a more experienced Ham talk about a subject Ham related and can ask questions. It is a safe place to chat and learn how to operate on radio without worrying about stumbling over our tougues. I then asked my brother VE6RBN if he had a spare radio that I could get on the HF bands (frequencies not covered on hand held). The hand held operates on VHF bands and are only line of sight (20-50 miles) wereas HF bands can bounce around the world depending on power and sun spot activity.

There is and one of my mates is going through the process you did at the moment. I am pretty keen to do the same but it's a matter of time for me at the moment, lack of it. I've got a long happening over here and with that, other hobbies work and all...Time is very difficult to find. I'm intending to do it though. I'm keen for the HF thing, worldwide.

Yes, we could possible chat then real time while exploring a great hobby.

That's the idea - get connected. I like the idea of having a method of gaining information without relying on the traditional ways.

Plus I am sure that it fits in with you prepper mindset.

There is a club here in Yuma. A lot of retirees bring their radios with them and a lot of retirees want to 'learn the ropes'. They meet for breakfast on Thursday mornings from October through April.

LARC is a great club, and an awesome group. Due to Covid the Saturday get togethers for breakfast have stopped as well as the Tuesday coffee shop gatherings. We do get together on the air, so still some social activity still goes on.

Damn. I got my third class and second class radio engineer ticket punched in 1970. I wonder if it's still good :)

Hammy has always been on my list of want to hobbies. Short wave has always interested me.

It's looking good! I'm always amazed how people can build things, and I love robots 👀

Ah, so if I have questions about my new hobby, I might seek out some advise, I mean thirteen of them? But my first PI is going to be learning some programming and as a future possible desk top replacement. I can hardly wait till the 11th or 12th, but with my luck with Amazon Delivery I'll be lucky to get it before Christmas.

Time for me to start a new list a Rasp-Pi list.

Be happy to help where I can or point you to some great references. Always learning new stuff, it never stops.

I love robotics, it makes me wonder how they are programmed to perform. That alone gives me the desire to want to know more about it but its unfortunate that I wasn't able to push through. Now I can only admire those who can understand robotics

I have always been amazed at things that they do. For me it is mostly about learning and stretching my brain.

That's nice, its good to gain knowledge for no knowledge is a waste

I can see where robotics would be an enjoyable hobby. I don't know much about the inner workings of a computer.

Hi, everybody

Hope you're having a good weekend.
Great topic, as always, one easy to engage with. I have devoted time to several hobbies over the years, most of whih have been outgrown or otherwise involuntarily abandoned. As a child I was pretty frail, so most outdoor activities were banned for me. The first hobbie I remember having was comic books reading and collecting. As I mentioned in a recent post (where I drew my favorite comic book super hero) I collected at least 5 different comics. All that collection (more than 300 issues) got lost by the time I finished elementary school.

I also got into collecting stamps or cards in albums we'd fill to claim prizes (I remember fondly one of Mexican masked wrestlers, soccer, Venezuelan baseball, and cartoons). None of those survived either.

Then I got into collecting coins. I had a pretty good collection of coins from about 50 countries by the time I finished college. I left my collection at my father-in-law's and by the time I came back from grad school the collection did not exist. That made me forget about it. By 2008 Venezuela was way on its way towars international isolation and it was pretty hard to come across anything from other countries.

IMG_20201107_101840.jpg

It was a pitty since I had just completed a collection of state quarters in the States, which is the only thing I have left from my collector's days. I have been this close from selling all the coins (I sold one set already a couple of years ago when people who could afford it still traveled freely in and out), but despite the dollarization of the Venezuelan economy (now dollars circulate freely becoming the de-facto unofficial currency) no one accepts coins, only bills and god forbid your bill looks old or has a scratch.
I also love reading books, but I do not see reading as a hobby. I have not read much for pleasure this year, anyway. Only two books so far (way behind my yearly average, which was 12).

I dream with a big house and a big garden where I can devote my free time to cultivating different plants. That would be very relaxing and rewarding.

I remember as a kid the little tri/quad fold blue coin collector booklets. I had one for pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters, I really have no clue what happened to them, and never did get a single booklet all filled out. but it was fun, I think they were a means of teaching kids about saving.

My Mom had a complete collection of the state quarters. My brother and I were always on the lookout too, and each of us probably gave her a hundred state quarters. I had sort of forgotten that, thank you for reminding me.

My understanding is that, in order for the collection to be actually collectible, it has to be comprised of "uncirculated quarters". Maybe I misunderstood the requirements.

She wasn't interested in the value of the collection, just in the gathering of it. Sort of my mom's style..

Mine too on most all the collectibles I've managed not to throw away. I have over 100 coffee cups, 50 from each state. The rest friends bring back from their vacation trip.

The state quarters in particular I was referring to was the official collection. I have that 2 binder set when it was first issued. That's when I read about the value of the coins in circulation. Another Hive member I responded to yesterday had collected the quarters also.

I started off with the quarters I'd get as change from retailers. I had a small box full of those. Then I heard about the official set, so I gathered up all my loose quarters, chose the ones that didn't have many scratch marks, and made a complete set of those. The rest I redeemed.

I know a few who collect coins although it's not something I've ever done. As a kid I used to collect stamps and my dad had a pretty good stamp collection as well. It's a shame you collection disappeared when you left it at your father-in-laws.

I like your plant-cultivation dreams...I've always been interested in gardening and whilst I don't have the ability to engage in it much these days it will change as time goes by. I did a post yesterday about my own hobbies and what the future holds for them. I think it's important to have interests, and if they turn into hobbies that's even better.

Thanks for joining in this week.

I also remember these while growing up. Seems like almost every ones parents had a coin collection of some sorts.

My wife @pooky-jax has one.

A hobby that moonlights as collections that increase in value. I dig your style.

In deciding which hobby to display here for the weekend engagement, I chose my ceramic figurines. However, I also have this collection of U.S. State Quarters. I started my collection as soon as they were announced. I even have two binders. My binders are the snap ring ones where you place each coin that's in it's plastic holder in the ring. So far, it's the only coin collection I have started. I thought about joining the Silver Stackers Club here on Hive. I want to start collecting more silver and gold.

I also have several comic books for early on. For example, I have Superman and Lois getting married in the comics. That was a fantastic series that year.

Thanks so much for sharing your coin collection.

The obvious answer for me would be motorcycles. But I sometimes wonder if that is even a hobby anymore. I can spend days immersed in the whole culture and the finer points of them.

pato rojo wallpaper.jpg
pato rojo-my onetime Ducati

I work on them, my two current motorcycles have only darkened the service entry of a shop once between them. I had a fairly technical problem, a leaking fork seal and was 1500 miles from home. It was a bad choice (I'm paying for today), I should have bought the tools needed and done it myself.

Lee's ferry.JPG
Lee's Ferry, Arizona. My Suzuki V Strom camping and off highway bike.

I write about motorcycles, I dream about motorcycles and maybe even more specifically about riding them.

So the question I would pose to You All is this: Can an obsession also be a hobby?

If I had a hobby to chose that I've not done it would be flying single engine aircraft. I have hours and hours with other people at the controls and have never done it myself. Specifically, I'd like to fly ultra lights.

So. You ask why I haven't pursued that dream? One obsession in my life is plenty :)

Damn dude, that shot in the Arizona desert is gorgeous. It's just us here, right? So what I'm about to say won't ruffle any biker feathers..

We talked about our bikes before, I've had several ranging from crotch rockets to Harley's. Man, the most comfortable, technologically advanced, and smoothest bike I've ever ridden was the BMW GS1200. And the thing stopped like a champ too!! Damn that thing could stop!

Rode one for about a week out here several years back, touring through Tail Of The Dragon and several other amazing road courses--toured about 5 states that time.

Point is, it sure would be a nice bike to ride alongside that Suzuki through the desert.

Ohhhh. If we are riding paved roads, I have my connie. A Kawasaki Concours 1400. That beast is made for the road, and is sporty enough to handle well, too.

I have a couple of friends that ride the GS. What a great motorcycle. Sporty and fast. I have a better road than the dragon. The 666. 110 miles from Alpine, AZ to Morenci, AZ. It's called the US151 now, but once was a feeder road to Route 66...

666.JPG

This is a bit of it. Light traffic, too. Even on the weekends.

Fuckin dooooppe! Better than the dragon though @bigtom13?! I'll take your word for it. Have you ridden the dragon (I'm sure you have)?

Things like that I respect and don't argue, like saying there's a better MC than Eminem. Or a blonde is better than a brunette. Or a knife is better than a pistol. From the looks of that 666, it's a blondie and a brunette all at the same time!

I have ridden the dragon. It's a really cool road, and the scenery is unmatched. But too much traffic and LEO presence. A lot of the 'best road ever' lists have the South Entrance of Mt. Palomar at or near the top, but there is a pretty unused road that is just as good about 10 miles away.

This section of the 666 and a couple of others I have to remind myself to breathe. It's like a super roller coaster type ride. The 666 is also home to my favorite campsite in the US. An 8 space NFS free campground.

"I'm in!"

I figured you'd cite motorcycles as your hobby, and why wouldn't you? It's been with you for so long and is your passion...Yes, an obsession can be a hobby, for sure. I think things only fail to be hobbies once one is getting paid for it.

I'm a sponsored shooter but I've scaled it back because being paid took away the fun-factor...I had to perform for the sponsors and it turned what was a hobby into more of a job. I am still sponsored but in different ways, less financial, and now enjoy the hobby aspect again.

I know a guy who has an ultra-light...He's a shooter and when he comes to events in our State he often flies in. It's hilarious. (His wife brings his loadout in the truck). He lands, saunters over with a grin and it never fails to give me a laugh. Those who don't know him are like, WTF just happened.

Sounds like my kind of guy! There was a guy up in Washington that won the lottery. He bought a bluebird motorhome and rigged a Mercedes sedan to tow behind it and showed up at every trapshoot in Washington state for several years. It was hilarious, and he had big fun!

I understand about getting paid. There is a really fine line there. When it's a job, it's not as fun. I do have a friend who writes for Rider magazine. They've offered him full time and he won't do it. He writes as a 'stringer' and rides and does what he wants. He has a company writing business reports for his day job.

I'm just sitting here writing a post for later about hobbies and literally just wrote this line...

I'm not sure what exactly defines a hobby however I figure it's simply an activity a person does in one's spare time and for enjoyment. Basically something other than one's job, profession or vocation although I think getting some financial recompense for one's hobby isn't against the rules. Look at us all here hobbying on hive for example.

It sounds like your mate is writing for his hobby, and work. :)

I think he's a writer. It's all he's ever been. His dad started the business and he's quite successful at it. Got his degree at Cambridge and has been writing ever since.

He's a RIDER too. He just happens to share some of his rides and 'things' with the world. I think that's how he has it in his head.

Sounds like an all-round sort of guy.

Hobby, lifestyle, brotherhood. It has been a part of my life since jumping the peddle bikes as a kid on the farm off of a ramp and a cement block for distance. Then two blocks. Then three. Then a broken knee and crooked teeth...

Part Evel Knievel

part dumb ass country boy. Full blooded biker trucker.

Hoooooo. I thought I was the only dumb ass that got hurt way worse jumping a pedal bike as a kid than I ever did as a motorcycle rider!

Brother, I do understand. And we both understand why a dog sticks his head out of the car window.

Yep. Cuz we farted.

Ok... No really, did you fart.?
Lmao

Ahahahahaha. That's a distinct possibility.

Your babies are so gorgeous!! Hell, I would look stunning in a Red Ducati it suits my personality!! Hahaha so your hobbie that is actually an obsession

It's utterly impossible to look anything but good on that Ducati. That color is Ducati Red, known wherever paint is sprayed :)

It is no doubt, the best looking motorcycle I've ever owned. It was a lot of fun to ride, too.

Can an obsession also be a hobby?

I thought that was what made something a hobby. Possession see how closely that looks like obsession? After all we can be possessed by our obsessions.

I think I agree with that. I can be possessed by my obsessions...

!ENGAGE 25

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Cats are my obsession. So yes. Hobby=Obsession

Yes, an obsession can be a hobby. I love genealogy and started as a hobby. It became an obsession. I had to step back from it. When I did a restart, I approached it differently. Now, I don't stay up until 4a.m. searching for something because I can't stop until I find it.

I have a cousin that has the obsession. She and her mom (my mom's sister) bought a motorhome for 'further research'. Seriously, they followed my Great Great's migration west searching old newspapers and libraries.

I get all the research and none of the 0400. Works for me :)

IMG-20201105-WA0054.jpg

Hanging out with your twin, listening to music and dancing, cooking and trying on clothing sounds like a very good way to pass some time on the weekend! It sounds like you have a great time and you two sure look happy in these selfies.

Legit hobby, thanks for joining in.

Saludos!

I have friends that are twins. They used to do everything together and it was really hard to tell them apart. When they were in their 20s they actually won the identical twin competition at the Iowa State Fair.

A few years ago their whole family did the DNA test thing and they found out they are fraternal not identical. Pretty amazing.

They finished each other's sentences and almost always turned at the same time. Do you?

Saludos!

Same as my close friend and I. We been known each other for 10 years and always enjoy being together, having coffee taking selfie chatting bullshit gossip...bla bla. A special hobby yea being with a knit-close friend like twins ❤️

Que genial tener alguien especial con quien compartir esas pequeñas cosas verdad? Gracias por leer y saludos!

De nada. Ten un excelente fin de semana 😍

Wow! You guys are twin? This is indeed awesome, I really love twins.
You guys really share a lot in common; listen to music together, paint your nails together and many more, these are really fun. 😁

Si, así es! somos gemelas! y yo amo a mi hermana jajaja. Gracias por leer, seguiremos haciendo estas cosas mientras estemos juntas. Saludos!

Wow! That's great, it's a pleasure. 🙏

I'll play along with both prompts this time. Since it is so late in the weekend I'd originally intended just to comment but reading everyone else's has made want to play too. I'd have to say that photography is my favorite hobby but that's mainly because I can combine most of my other hobbies with photography. I initially focused on landscape photography as much as an excuse to go hiking and camping as from a fondness for landscapes.

Auto racing would be a hobby I'd pick up if I could do anything. I love fiddling with cars and watching racing, and may or may not have done a little unofficial racing here and there but being able to dedicate time and focus to that would be so much fun. Honestly it wouldn't even matter what I was racing just as long as it wasn't that drag strip style 'racing'...

For someone who like the outdoors photography is a perfect partner-hobby I think; The opportunities available enhances both experiences.

I like racing too. I've done some car stuff, nothing too serious, but raced go-karts for a while which was great fun. Finances got in the way, and time (lack of it), and so I give it away. Oh, I sold my go-kart to help fund the purchase of Faith's engagement ring also...It was a good trade off I think. :)

!ENGAGE 25

Yeah, I couldn't ask for a better one to partner with my other hobbies. Now if only I could figure out how to combine whitewater rafting and photography without destroying a camera or needing expensive waterproofed gear...

I had a go-cart for a while but just drove it on a dirt track at the house, never got to race it. Some of my friends are mechanics, they like to post memes about 'get your kids interested in working on cars, then they will never have the money for drugs' I feel that. I imagine Faith appreciated your decision :D

I enjoy working on cars (at least to some degree) so racing kinda goes hand in hand with that. Do they do demolition derbies there? I don't know if covid put a stop to it but for a long time you could go watch people race old school buses on the weekends around here. Now that was a sight!

We have demolition derbies here, usually in conjunction with Sprint Car events. Kind of fun...There's actually some method to the madness also. :) (Believe it or not.) They race just about everything here...They even have demo derbies with caravans hooked up. Lol.

I loved racing my kart. It was not a dirt cart though, a road-going one. It was capable of about 120kph and was great fun to drive. This was in the days right before it went very technical with MOTEC ECU and dash configurations etc. That's sort of why I had to stop...I just couldn't afford all the latest tech. Faith likes her engagement ring, a 100 year old antique or triple rose cut diamonds, at the time of buying it. There's a good story behind it which I may tell someday.

I feel that, the more tech involved the more I try to avoid it. Most of my tinkering with cars was mainly with old ones that didn't have all the electronics.

Cab't wait to hear the story to go with that ring!

Lol, I'll tell it someday...It's probably only interesting to us, Faith and I, but it's a good story I guess. I'll get to it.

I suppose it should be scuba diving but if I'm being honest wreck diving is really more of an obsession, with dive trips in the UK, Truk Lagoon, Palau, Bikini, and the Red Sea I've seen some of the very best.
108305696_3444572662233941_1807984460334856198_n.jpg

For an out and out hobby it's got to be cycling with just one bike here in the Philippines I'm a bit lost, there are 4 sitting in the garage back in the UK, but I can only get 2 on the car for a weekend away.

Full sus 29er it would be a great bike to have here but sadly it is thousands of miles away.

I love cycling, it's very relaxing, fun and a great exercise too, I used to go out with some friends good memories ;)! You have an amazing hobby here

it has its moments IMG_0354 2.jpeg

Is this your hand? Lol.

Well 🤷🏻‍♀️ No one said this life would be easy

Damn. That looks like there are some springy parts right in the middle of that brace. I'll just be that left a mark.

there was a bit of a gap still I've still got a nice scar to remind me

Cycling and scuba, two legit hobbies for sure. I like the sound of wreck-diving although that sort of falls into a sub-category under Scuba I reckon.

I never got into bike riding, I mean after I grew up from being a kid. I was always on my bike as a kid but it never endured into my adulthood. I'd like to have a go now as a couple of my friends do it but it all seems a bit dangerous around here and they refuse to use bike paths in parklands...So, it's just motorbikes for me, no pushies.

Some people might argue that scuba diving is a subcategory of wreck diving.

I've always enjoyed cycling and can't really remember a time when I didn't own at least one bike. The UK isn't the best place for road cycling so I guess that's why I like the Whyte so much it's great for a day out on Dartmoor even when it's pissing down.

And yet others may argue that scuba and wreck diving are both subcategories of life itself. :)

I imagine Dartmoor would be a good place for bike riding, certainly scenic enough. As long as you weren't run over by a tourist you'd be fine!

Haha, Life don't talk to me about life.

I'm fairly safe most of my cycling on the moor is off-road using the bridleways apart from the odd sheep or pony to run into its OK.

Oh, man. I like that bicycling idea except for one small item. Pedaling. I like some motor on my two wheels :)

My buddy the ex Navy diver tells tales of diving Bikini and other places. He was part of the salvage navy so his diving was trying to make them not be wrecks or make them stop being wrecks. He was attached to Harbor Clearance Unit 1 in Pearl Harbor two different tours. He's seen some wrecks...

Wow you have some interesting friends @bigtom13. Back in the 70s when I was a lad and first learned to dive, my Dad was working at the Dartmouth Royal Naval Officers College. He was a bit suspicious about what I was being taught by BSAC buddies so he enrolled me in the Dartmouth College Scuba Club all the instructors were RN clearance divers. Spent many a happy hour being freezing cold in the mud at the bottom of the River Dart. But I'm still alive

My guy started in the Navy as a Panty Waver (signalman) in '65. He did 13 months as a signalman on a heavy cruiser (his second boat) off shore Vietnam. Before it was over he spent 13 months in the mud of the Mekong River. I think his coldest duty was his twilight tour in Keyport, WA and Nanaimo BC with the torpedo test ranges (Nanaimo had a small NATO base). He was stationed at Pearl twice, ran the diving locker at Guam, Enewetok as part of the clean up team and the rest was on boats or San Diego. I know he's dived at Diego Garcia and in the Persian Gulf plus just a lot in So Cal. He also used to ride a motorcycle. He lost trust in his legs and quit a couple years ago. We've actually known each other over 50 years...

I've lost trust in my legs could be the rum

Crazy. Diving and cycling. We have a lot in common.

But wtf is that thing?

looks like its a giant's donut :)

Your profile pic just got a whole lot cooler.

Good morning @galenkp and all other in this community.

My hobby when I was a child was singing. My Aunt taught me how to sing and I sang a song in every school program. The teachers recognized that I was a gifted child and they told me that I had a good voice. They encouraged me to have a voice lesson to develop it more. My teacher taught me how to play guitar and piano in their home but there was a big hindrance.

My mother avoided my dreams. She didn't allow me to do what I liked to do. She wanted me to help taking care of my siblings since I was the eldest one. I won't forget how she told me that it was wasted time. I had no power to refused the will of my mother until I forgot it.

Just lately, last October someone told me about #starmaker. I felt shy to join because of my confidence in singing was totally gone. But I tried it. Amd I enjoyed listening my song. I wanna share one of my cover song .

Please tey to listen my song. It is timely in favor of what the topic today. I appreciated this.

I published a song on StarMaker, check out my singing now!

Dedicated to you all!

It's a pity your mother prevented you from engaging with your hobby of singing but hopefully you are singing now and enjoying it. Thanks for joining in this week and I hope you have a great weekend.

Thank you and I respect my mother on that time. Now I remember and I have got a lt of followers. I am so happy @galenkp. Then I also earn from this #starmaker. They are monetizing this apps.

I don't really sing well. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a gifted talent from God. I hope you will keep it the good work. Enjoy your weekend

Im ao lucky that I can sing. Thank you fir dropping by.

When I click the link it wants me to download an app. There another way to listen to it?

816.. Wow!!! Thinking of the time I TRIED to knit on my period. It did not end well.

Knitting isn't your thing? I've never tried it to be honest, doesn't look like something I'd want to do really...All that string and those big ass needles...I'd either hang myself or stab myself.. Would not end well either way I guess. 🤣

Exactly. Sooo boring... unless you can combine it with sex or surfing, pffft

Sex-knitting...Hmm, now that may have some merit as a hobby. ✅

I didn't know sex could be a hobby! I may have to rethink my potential entry. Who knew?

Well, yes, for many people "Sex" is a hobby 😃

This comment has so many directions it could go. I'm trying to compare bicycling with diarrhea but I've never tried it.. nor have I ever knitted. Never had a period either!
It's probably best I just take your word for it

Just imagine being really f**ing grumpy, and trying to make thread do stuff on needles.

Got it! Clear as day now.

I've got a pretty good imagination, but that's stretching just a little far for me.

Hello, Mr. KP 😅
How are you and your wife doing? I hope very well!
I think you have pretty original hobbies, I’d like to try shooting once, it sounds fun, haha. It took me some time to think what to comment here because I have a LOT of hobbies, so I made this video down here showing you the main ones:
PS: I meant to say “main” instead of “principal”, but I when I’m nervous I forget everything I know, LOL…

I like to sing, to paint, to play instruments, to listen to music while I do everything (which bother my parents, but I still do it, haha) to write, read, etc.

Singing makes me feel free, serene, happy. I love to sing since I’m a little girl. My mother told me that when I watch “Barnie” I always sang the last song and needed her to come and hug me, otherwise I cried.😀

Painting it’s my way to show the world inside my head, and somehow my way to relax, because I don’t have to think much, just play music and enjoy the painting process. Of course, if I mess it up I get “a bit” stressed, but at the end I always… Well, 95% percent of the time, can fix the mistakes I make (in the other 5% I burn he paper and curse it ).😃

Playing Instruments is just fantastic. I can feel the vibrations of the music nearer me, and if I have a sore throat I know that I’m not alone because my instruments are with me. (They have their fight because they want to be all played at once, but I enjoy them, those fights make me feel loved).😍

Writing helps me to put all my ideas in order and create new characters I can talk to while washing the dishes. (some of my characters frighten me, but they all have a part of me, so…). It also helps me to disconnect from earth and write a world I’d like to live in, where I’m the goddess and I can make people happy and give suffering to those who deserve it.

Reading might be one of my favorites, because it helps me disconnect even more. I can travel everywhere I want, meet great characters, laugh, etc.

I think I have more, but I’m going to leave it until here because… because, hehe.
Have a great weekend!😘
June

What a cool answer! I'd expect no less from you though. 😉

Yeah, I understand how those things really mean something to you and it's so great that you find so much value from things that mostly come from within you. It shows a deep contentment, and a degree of introversion, not a bad thing at all.

I'm going to curangel this if I remember, it's rare that I'd promote a comment but this one deserves it.

Also, I mentioned to my brother @tarazkp that you and @imabby17 are daughter's of @hlezama, he didn't know. We both respect your dad a lot and so I reckon you can expect a little more support. See the power of engagement at work here? Relationships are so important. 😏

Oh, I know what I would have as a hobby if I could. I have too many hobbies, really, but this one is out of the question...yet. It requires both physical and time-related upgrades of my lifestyle.

Rock climbing.

I wonder if I am not too old for that already. Getting in good shape from now on is possible but getting in good enough shape...

I don't know. I have been observing it for about ten years now. And it seems further and further away from me.

You can do it! I know you can.

I have a good friend (mid 50s) that has had to modify his climbing but still climbs routinely. Like golf, it's about challenging yourself not about what you used to do.

It's never too late.

Thanks for the confidence. I shall see to be worthy of it ;)

Rock climbing is very trendy now, honestly, lots of my friends really into it. that's great and I really want to do it as well

Some day I will :) Wishing good luck to you, too.

Obviously my main hobby is this here Hive. Photography to be more specific I suppose, as I mainly post pics only. Then there are other hobbies which I don’t talk much about. Let’s just say @galenkp and me have something in common.

"Pull!" :bang bang:

Could be Lego.

That's what I meant. Build a pigeon thrower out of legos.

Lol...Sounds legit.

Great come back.

.

.

How did you know its firecrackers.

Fingers, pullin fingers.

Photography is a good hobby and these days reasonably cheap once some initial equipment is purchased. It's one that travels with a person to which is very cool.

Funny thing was, I sold me DSLR 6 months before steem came along, and then once again the passion came back for photography and I bought another one.

That happens...Things change...I'm writing a post about hobbies right at this moment and am at that point where I'm thinking about hobbies for the future. It's ok to bring a hobby back. Photography is a good one to bring back.

I'd guess I'd call photography my hobby's hobby :) But I can also take my camera in the car. It's a paradox, I tell you :)

Photography is definitely a popular hobby, especially in the last 5 years.

My first wife was an artist. She tried everything she could think of to get me 'creative'. Her brother was a photographer for the local paper and I got my first camera body in '74. I got to tell you, digital is so much better....

And easier too.

Responding a little late this weekend.

My hobby is mountain biking. One of the things it fascinates me about it is how close you are to nature and how adventurous can be while doing some sport. I have been practicing for several years, and although it gets harder to climb those mountains as I get older, it is wonderful to spend some time in nature exploring new ways on my bike.
There is an additional hobby I would love to do in the future, it adds an extra element of adventure, that is building my own tiny house on wheels, get my bicycle, and tour around with both of them for a whole year.
image.png

Of course, I would need to get help from experts, but I love the idea to spend some months building a place I have designed and then living in it for a several-month adventure!

I expected to see you say biking. But didn't expect the house on wheels thing. That's cool! I know a few who have decked out a bus as a house, pretty amazing job they did too. They travel around from place to place. It's their house. Very cool.

It is as having real freedom. Specially if you have an online job you can do remotely.

Yes, exactly.

Faith and I are planning a year off to travel around Australia...I'm thinking how I may be able to find it maybe with writing which I can do anywhere. We'll see. If hive price was good it work out ok I think. I'd do a travel blog or something, but I think I'd need to augment it with something else.

Freedom...Yeah, that's what I'm seeking...The freedom of choice in life. Someday I hope.

Wow. Like Galen I knew the bike would be the deal, but the tiny house surprised me. I really like the idea of them and would very much like to try that too. Mine would have to have a little garage built in for a motorcycle. Should be easy enough...

It is the idea of building it and then spending a whole year traveling with it that I love.

Cars and photography! I was trying to think of a bunch of things that I like to do and I thought it might be a little challenging to narrow down my interests but once I started typing it ended up being a lot easier! So my two favorite hobbies right now among many things, are probably car stuff and photography.

Ah this here was my love before I met my wife. She's still secretly hiding in my heart though! I'm hoping that one day I'll be able to get another one of these in a salvage yard somewhere and restore it. It's a Chevrolet Cobalt Super Sport Turbocharged model. The Turbo's were a lot more fun than the supercharged brothers were so I got a cooler model. This was the first stick shift I ever owned and man was it a crazy thing to practice drive a few times driving stick then having to drive it home, totally on your own LOL. I had so much fun tinkering with this car, it was awesome to learn on as well. It was really fast but I loved the sound of it more, if you're interested that much look up a YouTube video of them Cobalt SS Turbo Borla Exhaust, thing sounds mean!

A3BF58959FF44CC2A4D9A3B2DAB81E96.jpeg

This was one of my favorite vehicles that I did a lot of fixing to. This was my old reliable Ford Ranger pickup. In this picture here I was replacing the fuel pump on it because I had to replace the rear leafspring suspension so that necessitated lifting the bed off the truck. When you do something like that, it's way better to keep on fixing things, or more fun rather lol, so you don't have to lift it twice! At least to me, that's how it goes. I did the most work to this truck and the awesome part is that she's still running to this day, albeit with another owner. I sold it to a guy at work and he's still driving it around! I bought it at 224,000 miles and sold it to him at 290,000 miles and it just crossed 300k this past summer! That was my goal for the truck, to get it up to 300k and I shed a little tear that I wasn't the one who passed it but that's okay lol

My latest really fun hobby has certainly been my photography. I've been having a lot of fun with the new lens we bought and the ability to take incredibly clear and crisp photos has rekindled my relationship with the hobby. This is one of my recent favorite photos from 7 days ago. Funny thing is, it's now 70 degrees where it was snowing last week lol. I find it fun to be able to spend time trying to put together a good angle, focus and some of the other cool elements to take a nice picture and sometimes it works out pretty well!

By the way, did you ever get your hands on Adobe Lightroom on your phone to try out the free touch-up ability? Just curious

I think cars and photography are a couple of really popular hobbies, for different reasons too, although they both have the potential to leave the person with a sense of satisfaction. It must give you that sense when you see that old Ford drive by, still going, and probably running on those same springs you installed too! :)

Cool car! I love owning a 'rare' beast that not everybody knows about. I put a Borla Exhaust on an MGB I did for a guy once. It made that somewhat under powered MG sound bad ass. I also changed the cam and put Weber carbs on it, so it was only 'somewhat' under powered.

That's a gorgeous photo. Like you, I just love when I get a beauty. The difference between me and a real photographer is the number of 'blows' I get :)

Yeah the Cobalts were sleepers! A couple guys locally were actually racing and beating Vette’s so a lot of people didn’t understand the power those things had stock never mind with a bit of a tune and stuff.
Mine had a nice K&N short ran intake, a catless down pipe and a custom exhaust. I had a friend just tune it a tiny bit to adjust the air fuel ratio to account for the aftermarket intake and that’s about it. With the catless I often woke up the neighbors on a cold morning going to work lol.
What car are you referring to there, Mercedes?

The photography is fun but there are many pictures that don’t make it into my posts lol it’s okay though the memory cards can hold thousands of them so I don’t mind.

MGB a failed English car company. I worked on English Roadsters in my shop for a few years. It was night and weekend stuff, but I did quite a little of it.

That's a Triumph TR-6 in the background. In the early 70s they were Corvette killers, too. I bought and sold a couple of them.

Living in downtown Toronto does not give you the luxury to own a car. So, although I love to rekindle my relationship with her I have not been able to do that. Photography is something I have tried since 2014 with a DSLR I bought - the canon one. I believed that the photography skill means how you manually take great photos. The notion is changing and we consider editing as part of photography. That skill is something I have never considered learning. But, who knows I may try that in the near future.😇

Yeah I just touch them up on colors a bit by using Adobe Lightroom, it’s incredibly software that’s free on mobile phones or tablets so it’s been great! I just use the “auto” feature mostly unless I’m trying to really accentuate an element but that’s like 1 out of every 100 pictures I post lol.

The cameras are great, but one of the best parts is using a solid lens. Our canon 50mm lens has been such an incredible purchase for us!

I had to really think about this. Since I've lived in Asia the last 18 years or so, I'd have to now say the idea of 'hobby" is a very western one. So what's a hobby anyway? Some kind of leisure activity one pursues with some focus, to fill up one's leisure time, I think.

As an entrepreneur of a physical business AND as a solo mom, my leisure hours are few. Sometimes I read, but increasingly rarely - as i grow older, listening to other people's opinions of things floats my boat less and less. Unless it's a SUPERB book, I'd rather not. Happy to report we have an online global social media group called The Wellread Woman which makes sure that little time is spent on undeserving books.

I enjoy to cook and bake, but it's nearly always functional and definitely never in the "hobby" category. I make things for a few shut-in sick & older people around, but it often feels like a "should" instead of idle leisure activity.

Working out? Yup! I love to play sports and work out - am starting Cross Fit this coming week. Does it count as a hobby?/ Heck no. My fitness time is most definitely an essential activity for health & well being. Yes, it's fun, but then most of the things I choose to fill my days with are.

During lockdown I've been knitting hats for our tuberculosis refugee babies.

BabyHats5.jpg

So far I've made 27 of them - I choose to knit in the evenings while I listen to an audiobook, a podcast or some great music. Is knitting a hobby of mine? Nah. It's a soothing mind-numbing activity I do in the evenings so I sleep better. 🤣

Reading back over my response here, I'm feeling my resistance to the work "hobby". I equate it with bored housewives, retirees lacking in purpose or people living/working the 9-5 existence seeking to find some solace in their time off. Me? I choose a life that doesn't require a lot of downtime or 'leisure" per se... even Hive and my blockchain time has focus and purpose.

Intrigued at this quesion this week, and pondering some more. Maybe I NEED a hobby?? I'm gonna be thinking about that in the days to come and might post about that in the next week.

Appreciating the prompt and off to support the other avid hobbyists here!

No hobbies huh? Well, I'm not a bored housewife or retiree lacking in purpose or a person living/working the 9-5 existence seeking to find some solace in their time off...But I have loads of hobbies, let's call them interests, and couldn't imagine my life without interests.

I have LOADS of interests - just never think about them as hobbies. I remember trying to explain to a Thai person once what a hobby is, and the idea left them quite perplexed. Life in Asia is far less delineated - one enjoys one's life mostly and the days are slower but much fuller. Leisure might involve a nap in a hammock under a coconut tree. 😆

But the idea of filling up the spare hours with interests and hobbies is definitely a much more western idea. Was just lending another perspective from over here, where life is full and rich but strangely devoid of hobbies.

!ENGAGE 15

It's interesting to see how other cultures do things. I also think it's an opportunity thing as well. I mean some people simply can't engage in the same things other do through lack of opportunity. Ice fishing for instance, it's not a thing here, but is very common as a hobby/interest in Nordic countries.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I am a retiree, but I do not lack purpose.

I realize this is a bit hard to read, but it's 20 years old. It's been pinned to my wall (wherever the wall is) for the whole time. Not like I would forget, but it's public affirmation of what I do.

I think we have a semantics problem. Particularly since retirement riding (and maintaining) motorcycles is what I do. Even before, it was a focus in my life. What can I say, I think you have things you focus on that are part of your life no matter what they are called.

A rose by any other name...

Wow such a lovely knitting hats. I know, I'm girl and of course I love waering these pretty stuffs especially when the winnter is coming here.

I almost didn't make the weekend commitment.
My weekend was quite hectic, finally an ideal break to participate.
My favorite hobby is cooking, I enjoy it very much and even more I enjoy eating haha, I love to eat as much as I love to see others enjoy my preparations.
Sin títulojknhk.png

Cooking is probably a very popular hobby for many people. I'm glad because I like eating which means I like to surround myself with many people who like to cook...It keeps a constant stream of tasty foods coming my way! :)

When you cook you make relationships with the other people who taste your food. There is an exchange of ideas

Ideas yes, but I like the exchange of food more...Well, less and exchange, and more just it coming to me. Like I said, I'm a good eater which perfectly matches good cooks! :)

I like to read and write. I guess we do not consider them as hobbies as most of us read and write. But, I do not have any other specific interests that linger with me till now.
I started blogging in 2007/2008. It was mostly for myself as no-one would read a random blogger website from a stranger. It was like a personal diary posted online. I was certain that no-one would read and I used to write whatever I like. It was also an experiment for me to know if I can write. It has been 12 years and I write a post per year nowadays. Things have changed a lot. I would rather write in a blogging platform like Hive where I do not need to chase my audience (well relative to my unknown blog).

I also like to read a lot. Lately, it has been about bitcoin and economic freedom. I was always interested in sustainable consumption of resources and the potential economic impact. It sounds like a nerdy topic but I think it is really important for the time we are in. I also prefer to read future predictions and big picture technological advancement.

I agree with you on the reading and writing things and I think they could be classed as hobbies, but also are anpart of the person's make-up.

I write a lot, not just on hive, and I find it provides a lot more than the writing itself. The same with reading. I don't think it matters what we read and write if we enjoy it.

Yeah, I agree. I read, write and research for my job and I count those readings to be my job. Reading and writing as part of my hobby are way different than what I do as my job. But, looking back at what I wrote I came across someone who reads and writes at his job and reads and writes again as his hobby. Well, I need to spend more time in photography to avoid spending time reading and writing 🤠☺️

If we enjoy what we do in our spare time, non-professional life, then I think it's fair to say life is a hobby! What say you? 😃

That's a really nice way to put things into perspective. Yes. Life is a hobby and I enjoy my life 😇

That's nice to hear; We all only get one life so I suppose it makes sense to make the most of it.

Well, another great topic, before putting my answers down, I would love to invite @kohsamui99 and sis @bigsambucca to join me the topic this week 😍

Thanks, I'm looking forward your reply. 🙂

Hahaaaaaaa....you naughty girl you have thrown me in a spot looks like i will have to come up with something let me go think about it "I will be back" as Arnold Schwarzenegger would say 🤣

It's more fun to have you here...lol..just let you know that the deadline is early on Monday morning. I’m also thinking about stuffs haha...a bit busy outside today but will be back here soon. I know your hobbies is to sell veggies & fruits..You will find many potential customers here 🤣

Oh..you are so sweet @trangbaby thanks for letting me know about the deadline i will be posting in the comment section soon and you got it right i will be talking about my veggies and herbs..lol 🤣

How about being with Sam 🤣? Just kidding
Again & again your motorcycles so cool, I guess it will beat all the roads even tough route..
I can see how passionate you are for this motorcycles 😃

Sam isn't a hobby. He's an honest to God part of me and my life. And he has realllllly good co parents when I have to go off on my motorcycle. He loves them and their place as much as me and mine.

I can't agree with you anymore. Sam is amazing friend as well as plays an important part in your life. I meant spending time with him is a wonderful time for you and him too. He seems a very good boy

Ha I can see how different between men & women when it comes to Hobbies. Men seems talk more about machine /technical/ motorcycle 🙂

I guess it comes down to opportunity. Some may like to do a particular hobby but may not have the finances or the location to do it...Living in the middle of the desert isn't conducive to scuba diving for instance. It depends on many things I guess. I don't see hobbies as gender specific though as I know both men and women who do all sorts of things as hobbies. Of course I understand what you're saying...It's not common to see men doing cross-stitch as a hobby and probably more common to see a man doing car racing as a hobby than women; Not exclusively of course though.

I don't have a huge list of people that I'll just get right down and ride with. I mean it's one thing on a freeway and straight roads, but when I'm getting at it, I need to trust who I'm riding with. Probably a quarter of the names on my list are women. Seems to me like there aren't many 'casual' women riders, they are really excellent riders.

I guess that makes sense in a way. It had to be harder to 'get started' for women and those that got there freaking wanted it.

Trusting who you ride with is important. I've stopped riding with people because a lack of trust.

Yeah. Me too.

I've done some casual riding. We had an informal group here that drank coffee and occasionally rode somewhere to breakfast or lunch. I'd ride with them on the Freeway or straight and level 2 lane roads, but I was busy if they were planning something other.

There were 3 guys in that group that I'd ride anyplace with, and sometimes did. One at a time :)

I think groups of riders can sometimes get out of control - Remember I rode sports bikes not cruisers, and some of those dudes used to ride with were mental. I stopped going with them. It became a race rather than an enjoyable ride and so I lost interest.

I've had two guys (in 50 years) that I've trusted with High Speed Riding. One is dead and the other is in serious love and unavailable right now (he'll be back :)).

I don't like race riding. When I am on a real good road I ride "The Pace". Pick a gear and stay in it. Braking is considered bad form as is shifting. Crossing the centerline is forbidden. Then let the big dog eat! I have a few I'll ride like that with (includes 3 women). But not many and never more that 3 or 4 at a time.

Not me, but I'm a guy. So if you think men see all these things you've mentioned as an hobby which is true to some extent then what do you like as a female, I will love to know.😁

Like @dandays said, We like stay with cute stuffs...hahha

Hmmm, yeah! I get you.

And cute they stay. All they gotta do is show up.

Hey @trangbaby. My wife recently said something at random that really made me think. I was talking about how guys always buy the drinks and how we're always going out of our way to impress girls but when girls go out, they don't get all dressed up per se to impress us. Ya'all get all dressed up to stand apart from the other ladies--competition.

She said: "Cuz all we have to do to impress guys is show up." hm.. touché.

Hahaaa..your wife so smart, I love the way she telling about us 🤣🧚🌺She is so cute huh

I was drifting off to sleep one night with my best ex when she got the giggles and then started laughing her ass off.

When I got her to explain she said "If you decided you are in need of some strange stuff you need to go out and get lucky. If I decide I need some I'm going to go get laid."

I didn't think it was near as funny as she did :)

Oh fuck that's funny! Touché @bigtom13 's friend, touché

We like get dirty stuff. Ya'all like stay cute stuff. It's a win-win for everyone.

Heheeeee....Yeah 🤣 Right man

I love it when I'm right. 😉 I hope you're enjoying your weekend @trangbaby.

I do. Thanks 😊 Hope you have a great week ahead 🧚
