My first post, made with the help of my son, the Markdown was difficult for me to learn, but the theme for me was clear:

A few words in Tribute to our cat Floid.

I wrote it in Spanish, today with the help of translator, I leave it in English for more understanding in the Community.

I am very grateful to @jaynie for organizing this wonderful contest , and visualizing in a second post the tribute to my black cat Floyd.

Tribute to Floyd... ¿Would you adopt a black cat?

This is a dedication to a very special cat, which was our pet for a long time. His name was Floyd, he was named after my son because he is a lover of the rock band Pink Floydwhich is named after two blues musicians, one of them called Floyd Council (who was a person of color, usual for blues musicians in the days before the band). He was a very beloved pet, he became a member of the family as usual among cats and dogs and the families that raise them.

But this post is not only dedicated to our old cat Floyd, but also to show that black cats are adorable pets with the same characteristics as any other cat and contribute to reduce the fear, contempt or tendency to be excluded that even today exists in people regarding these domestic animals.

Historical context

Let's look at some history to clarify where the famous "fear" of black cats comes from. In ancient Egypt cats were sacred animals, they were related to the goddess Bastet, lover of cats and protector of homes. She was represented as a woman with a cat's head. In the temples it was customary to raise them, since they were thought to be divine manifestations of this goddess.

We also have the Greek goddess Hecate, it was believed that she could become a black cat, to get out of the underworld and mix with humans.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, the cats that were worshipped until then became pagan symbols, so obviously they were beginning to be associated with the devil and evil things.

In the Nordic mythology, their image was associated to Freyja, the goddess of love, who appeared with a carriage pulled by two huge cats. With the end of the Viking age and the entrance of Christianity in Scandinavia, it is natural that somehow the cat was also related to the pagan.

In the Middle Ages cats began to be associated with witchcraft and it was claimed that black cats were witches in disguise.

With the Inquisition, many people were burned at the stake and their cats too.

With the decline of the cat population in medieval Europe, the population of disease-carrying rats increased and with these the spread of epidemics. In the 18th century, a new way of looking at cats began as they had excellent skills in hunting rats and mice.

Today, cats are seen as pets, even as a family member, but studies show that black and brown cats are less widely adopted (Lepper et al., 2002). And they tend to stay in the shelter longer before someone chooses them (Kogan et al., 2013; Brown and Morgan, 2015).

Apart from superstitions, the color black is also believed to be difficult to photograph. Black cats in shelters are rejected by potential adopters because they do not look good in the selfies. This happened at a cat rescue center in Bishopston, Bristol (England) where in the words of its founder Christine Bayka

It's worse now because black cats don't show up in the selfies. Now everyone wants to take selfies and put them on Facebook. It's a very narcissistic use of social networks. It happens all the time, I'll go through all the questions and say 'are you flexible with regard to color', then they'll say, 'yes, as long as it's not black'.

In several countries they have taken the initiative to create a black cat day, and it is a way to honor this feline, and thus favor its adoption. In Italy it is celebrated every November 17th. The initiative came from AIDAEA, Italian association for animal and environmental protection, to try to reduce the superstitions associated with black cats. In Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is celebrated every 27th of October.

Black cats are cats like everyone else, they are the superstitions of some people who have labeled them as demonic beings.

Floyd, nuestro gato negro

A friend gave it to me, he was already 4 months old so it took him a little while to get used to it and do his needs in the right place. He spent several days in hiding while adjusting and soon after he took over the whole house. When I saw him I loved his black color, his bearing and elegance. His favorite food was pasta with ground meat and my son indulged him by putting mayonnaise on it (sometimes when he could, he would buy his own cat food). Sometimes, he would refuse the pasta with meat if it didn't have mayonnaise or tomato sauce, or even if it was placed on the floor instead of on a plate or napkin. He grew up in better times than he does now, so he became quite picky about food. I can't imagine Floyd being with us today since he would have to settle for things he didn't like to eat.

Young Floyd.

He was affectionate, attentive, curious, and accompanied us for many years. He died of old age. May God rest his soul.

In the sand...

Seven years of bad luck? No. The arrival of this black cat to the house only brought us happiness and growth.

¿Selfie?

This Post was made in memory of Floyd, our cat, to pay tribute to him, and to encourage the adoption of black cats that are simply cats like all the others.
