Handsome Emu.

Handsome Emu.

I was more than a little wary getting close enough to capture this handsome emu, but I'm glad I risked life and limb to snap this shot.

You're probably laughing at my trepidation as you gaze at those big, brown, innocent eyes. But hey! I've seen how fast these guys run and those beaks are extremely sturdy. Wouldn't you agree?

emu-profile-trudee-hunter-canvas-print.jpg

I'm sure there are some Emu lovers out there in Hiveland, so these images are for you. And in case you are wondering, I applied a little digital editing to my original photograph to achieve the dark green coloured background and soft texture.

As a member of Fine Art America, I get to see my photography and artwork on a variety of products, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to share them with you today.

EMU GREETING CARDS:

Putting my cautiousness aside; these guys are hard to capture because they are not still for more than a few seconds at a time. This one appeared to be very inquisitive and wanted to get to know me more than I wanted to get to know him.

"Keep your distance Em!" I told him as he threatened to eat my camera.

emu-profile cardsjpg.jpg

You can't really you blame me for being on the defensive after allowing this big guy a brief moment to invade my personal space can you? The risks I take in order to get a decent shot!

And to emphasize my point........Emus (Dromaius Novaehollandiae) are the second largest living birds (height wise) after the ostrich.

Perhaps I could overcome my fear if I had one of these cushions? I could lie down with my head on his face and pretend he was a cute koala. Sweet dreams Trudee!

emu-profile-trudee-hunter.jpg

And if I needed more convincing of the docile nature of emus, I could hang
this shower curtain up over my bath and try hard to ignore that penetrating glare whilst taking a shower.

Who am I kidding? That is definitely NOT going to happen. I enjoy my showers too much to invite this peeping Tom into my bathroom.

ROUND BEACH TOWEL:

Well, if he wasn't welcome in my bathroom, then maybe I could take him to the beach with me ? But then again, I don't think I'd be totally relaxed, lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, listening to the surf crash upon the shore whilst obliterating his view completely in the process. That wouldn't be fair would it?

emu-profile- r towel .jpg

TOTE BAG:

A tote bag with his image on it would be a great way for me to become less intimidated by him. And besides, he could help me look for some good savings as I browsed the shops. (As if I needed any help filling a shopping bag.)

emu-profile-tote.jpg

Did you know that Emus are Australia's largest native birds and are characterized by their soft feathers, and long necks and legs. Don't you just love that soft, fuzzy hair adorning his head and neck?

FACE MASK:

He looks alright on this face mask but I'd love him to crack a smile. Anyone know any good emu jokes?

Emus cover great distances when necessary and live off insects and plants, but can survive for lengthy periods without eating. They don't drink often but when they do, they consume water in huge quantities.

METAL PRINT:

My final image features 'my' Emu on a Metal background. When I have finally become very comfortable in his presence I might just purchase one of these prints for my living room.

After all, Emus are considered to be important cultural icons of Australia and feature on our coat of arms and a few different coins. They are also a prominent feature of Indigenous Australian mythology

No ordinary birds, these Emus!

Wow! 😁 It was a fun story and experience that you have. Hahaha! 😁 Yes, good thing that you mustered up the courage to take a snap! And you are right, he is handsome! How do you know its gender?

Thank you for sharing this to us, and for sharing the masterpieces which you can use to have his face on! I love the tote bag most and the face mask! 😉

I'm really blessed to read your comments. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. As for your question about it's gender, I wish you hadn't asked as I have no idea. Maybe I should have called it "Pretty Emu".Lol!

Hahaha! 😂 You made me laugh! 😂 I really thought you knew. 😁 Anyway, whatever he/she is gorgeous! ❤

They look fiercy but surely unique. Thank you for sharing this mighty Australian Icon with us.

Yes they are a little unique. Thanks for your comments and support! Enjoy your week!

You're welcome & Wish you the same :D

The bag looks great! Wonderful and elegant looking emu! He looks a bit like peacock! His expression is so like human, so full of curiosity and childlike wonder!

Nicely captured! I would love that pillow as well!

I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on my Emu and the products!

Oh! So glad to be of some assistance!
Do show more designs!

That's such a great shot and you're right, they are very volatile creatures when they want to be. I used to work in the restaurant at the Hamelin Station just south of Shark Bay/Monkey Mia in 1995 and I used to take all of the food scraps up to the animal sanctuary to feed the animals and was once caught between an Emu and a Camel- The Emu was on the footpath only a couple of feet right behind me and the Camel in front of me over a fence and within a second I had to make a judgment call and I chose to jump the fence in with the camel!
I chose the Camel because as much as they can spit, that is not a painful as a scratch from an Emu's sharp claws or beak.....Plus Camels are not as evil looking as Emus!

I also lived in the Daintreee Rainforest in the early 2000's and had quite a lot of unintentional contact with Cassowaries too. They are such beautiful majestic birds!
I even got to look after one called Bernie at an animal sanctuary in Thailand- (WFFT- Wildlife Friends of Thailand) a few years ago- He had been smuggled over there and when he was found, he was almost dead from lack of oxygen and is now brain damaged. Poor Bernie!

Anyway, I hope that you sell lots of Emu on FAA!
Take care and I look forward to your next one.

Hello @chocolatescorpi
Lovely to meet you. Thanks so much for visiting and taking the time to share such interesting information about your background.

I think you made the right judgement call where the Emu and the Camel were concerned. I'm sure you must have enjoyed your time in the Daintree Rainforest. We are so blessed with the wonderful flora and fauna in this country aren't we?

Hi there Trudy, thanks for your reply.
Yes we are sooo lucky to be in such a large country with such a diverse array of flora and fauna- though really everyone around the world is just as blessed to have such magnificent animals roaming around their countries!
Such a shame that so many people not only take them for granted, but exploit them so!
You have taken a great shot of an animal- a bird that is rarely given such appreciation and put it in the limelight for every one to enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of and learn from so good on you!

Here is a still of a male Cassowary and bub taken from some video footage I was so incredibly lucky to have shot in the Daintree last time I was up there visiting my old home....
I need to find a name for them. What do you think?
CASSOWARY AND KID.jpg

Yes we are very fortunate to live in this country with natures abundant blessings. Thank you for sharing this fabulous photo of the Cassowarys. They are amazing birds aren't they. I'm a bit stumped for names for them at the moment but I am assuming by now you have come up with some yourself.

Hi there Trudy, nice to hear from you on a Friday night n all.

No I haven't had a chance to find names for them, however I do know that there have a been a few lately, including a family of Cassowaries just a couple of days ago that were run over by idiots in cars....😡

They were a protected species until just a few years ago when the QLD govt decided that they weren't....Same govt that decided to let Adani dig up the Great Barrier Reef, so.....
Anyhoooo, yes...It's Friday night, let's not get into that minefield right now...

But yes, great to hear from you.
I hope that you have a wonderful weekend where ever you are and whatever you do.😀

I love the emu, but, equal to that are the one-way conversations that you have while you are justifying him. It really brought a smile to my face, just listening to it.

All I can say is, "Run, Trudi!" I had to defend myself with an umbrella at the German Eifel Zoo when the kids were younger. He wanted to take on one of the girls and scared the bejesus out of her. I was opening up and closing the umbrella. Scared him, but, not before he scared ME. They let their animals wander if they got out of the cages.

Yikes.

I still loved them and your story reminded me of that. I love all your products, especially the tote bag!

Thank you Denise. Glad you enjoyed this post. From now on I'll remember to pack an umbrella as well as my camera when I want to get amongst the wild life. Lol. Thanks also for the kind tip and support.
