Recently I set up some t-posts and ran some paracord across them. Now its time to plant the California Wild Grapes in four holes I dug. They will make a good food plot for the deer and will be fun to pick a few as well for whatever use we want. Though I think it may be a few years before they produce.

We were originally going to plant these into the fenced in area, but after reading more about the grape we figured this would be better for the wild life. I will still try them, but maybe a more sweet cultivar is worth growing inside the area where deer cannot get.

Regardless I am excited to grow grapes.. My only experience with grapes are the muscadines that grow wild in the area.

These are small now, but I hope they will be trained on the wire in just a few years.

I dug a good size hole for each.. around the size of a five gallon bucket.. Hopefully that is enough to keep them happy until they can grow strong enough roots to push through the hard clay.

So for now I will keep an eye on them and clear out weeds that try to compete. And maybe in a few years I will have some of these grapes to eat.
Generally, wild grapes are more suited to growing on the exterior walls of wooden sheds, garden houses, or near fruit trees, where they can climb from branch to branch. You have opted for ‘cultivated’ planting, which has the advantage of allowing you to keep the vine better ‘in shape.’ Yes, even wild grape varieties need some care and pruning in winter if you want lots of juicy berries. If you are offered this vine (Isabella), then definitely go for it! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabella_(grape)) It has all the characteristics of a wild vine and produces a bountiful harvest.

I think "California wild grape" is just its name. We have muscadines here which are what we consider more of a "wild grape". I think the kind of got are best cultivated on the wire.
If it is Muscat Bleu, then I agree with you wholeheartedly. It definitely needs to be trained on wires and pruned properly.
Good luck with the grapes! We tried to grow some on our property when I was a kid, but we never had much luck with them. We kind of just planted them and let them go, so it was likely our fault!
Ah well we shall see if mine do anything. I have had plants in the past no matter how happy they did not flower. But I do hope these grape plants produce flowers and fruits one day.
I hope so as well for you!
Good luck
thanks
I wish you success on you new plant. Keep up a good job weldone
thanks much
U are welcome boss
The easiest way to grow grapes is to not want grapes. I've personally tried to grow them twice without success. They need some kind of auto drip watering system. But Arlene hates grapes. Her fence is covered halfway around the yard.
Ah maybe I will need to look into getting a drip system. Hoping the rains we get about weekly help out enough. If not I will need to check on them and water them by buckets until it rains again.
The drip system works great
Keep them consistently moistured.
Good luck with that :)
Indeed, between the rains I need to check on them.
Nice setup, those wild grapes are awesome once they get established. Yeah, you're probably looking at 3, 4 years before good fruit production but totally worth the wait. The deer will probably nibble on them while they're growing too
Cool, sounds like I am on track for some good fruit in a few years.
Hehe yeah I expect them to.
I have just planted grapes at my house this year, actually transplanted a couple one year old seedlings from my other home that I am selling. So far they are growing good, but will take a few years before they produce.
Ah nice, yeah I bet they will vine out a bunch before producing any fruit.
That should be fun to grow. I live in the Finger Lakes region of NY where grape fields are everywhere. It may take a few years but you will certainly enjoy them.
My first time growing these grapes, so hopefully all will go well. Nice, I think we have vineyards around here too.
Yeah I am thinking maybe 3 years before I get fruit.. we shall see.
Woah, this is exciting to wait. I hope this will grew faster and able to produce lots of grapes. It's worth to wait.
Me too, a few years from now should be quite interesting to see.
Nice work, the holes should definitely help with the clay soil. I tried planting in clay once without doing that and learned my lesson the hard way. Hope you get some awesome grapes in a few years. My father laughed at me crazy 🤣
Hah yeah that clay can be really hard on plants, best to dig a hole and use some garden soil.
thanks, I hope they do well too.
thanks a lot man good advice
That clay is good fertile soil, just a challenge for some roots. Once the vines get going mulch it periodically and they should do well there.
Ah yeah, I dug some pretty deep holes for them so hopefully they will handle their new homes well.
Nice, yeah I have added some mulch since writing this.. they seem happy with it.
I hope they do well.
Me too
The grapes are going turn out more healthier than you can ever imagine, you’ve got this!
Nice, I do hope so.. thanks
I planted 2 grape vines in my garden, but they withered due to the extremely hot weather.
Oh.. well I hope mine handle the heat.
I’ve never tried growing grapes before, but it’s awesome that you’re thinking about the deer too. I can’t wait to see how they grow over the years
Yeah should be an interesting experience.. will do another post about them when they grow up a bit.
Good luck for your planting, hope it will grow soon☺️
Ah thanks
I hope you can eat wild grapes in the future. I also planted grapes in a deserted place this year where I can't go very far. It will bear fruit in 3 years, I hope I can eat the grapes too :)
Ah nice, hopefully in three years mine will also fruit.
Good luck! I hope you have a bountiful harvest. I also love growing fruits and vegetables too.
Much appreciated...
Nice, yeah they are fun to grow.
I hope your effort will be compensated by having bountiful harvest of good grapes, 🙏🤗
Me too, a few years from now should be good.
I’ve tried planting grapes before, but it didn’t go so well. Hopefully yours will turn out better, can’t wait to see how it goes!
Ah shucks, well hopefully mine indeed do better.
Great. Grapes are wonderful fruits. I'm sure you can't wait to eat them at the beginning of autumn. In Turkey, they usually ripen at that time of year. What color is this variety? Red or green?
It may be a few years before I get any, but when I do am excited to try them.. Not sure, yet to get any flowers or fruit from them.
My father always wanted to plant grape trees in our backyard, he did try couple of times but failed due to climate and probably the soil in our yard was not really perfect for the condition of growing them.
Well, all the best for your Grape plants!
Ah damn, well hopefully I have better luck than your father did with mine..
thanks, hopefully they will do well.
I hope the plants are big quickly and can flourish
thanks much, I hope so too.

STOPPlanting them in a direct sunlight helps. I hope they grow healthy
Indeed they like lots of light.
Keeping an eye on them and clearing out weeds is a beautiful way to help the grapes grow. I hope they do well so you can reap the fruit of your labour
