Hello everyone

Yesterday morning, at around 7:35 a.m., my husband and I headed to Siriroj Hospital because he had to undergo surgery. He hadn't been feeling well for about a week, and last Saturday, we went to the hospital for a checkup. The doctor diagnosed a hernia and scheduled surgery for Wednesday.

The morning of the surgery arrived, and we left early to make it to the hospital. We got there around 8:10 a.m., feeling a mix of nerves and anticipation. The past week had been tough, knowing surgery was on the horizon.

Upon our arrival at the hospital, our first stop was the registration department. We needed to inform the staff about my husband's scheduled surgery. Once the necessary paperwork was taken care of, the hospital staff guided us to the surgical and orthopedic department located nearby.

After being escorted to the adjacent surgical and orthopedic department by the hospital staff, a nurse promptly arrived with a blood pressure monitor to measure and record vital signs. In addition to this, blood was drawn for necessary testing. Subsequently, a comprehensive physical examination was conducted as a part of the pre-surgery preparations.

As the medical procedures unfolded, a financial aspect came into play. Prior to the surgery, it was mandated that 80 percent of the medical expenses be paid upfront, amounting to approximately 160,000 baht. The overall cost of the surgery was estimated to be around 200,000 baht, marking it as a notably expensive procedure. Despite the substantial financial commitment, our perspective remained unwavering – my husband's life held greater value than any monetary concerns. In the face of a crucial decision, we were prepared to pay this price, recognizing the profound significance of prioritizing his health over financial considerations.

Following the completion of blood tests and a comprehensive physical examination, my husband was escorted for a 20-minute ultrasound session. Once the imaging procedure concluded, a wheelchair attendant kindly guided us to the patient's room where we settled in to await the scheduled surgery. With approximately an hour left before the designated surgery time, the room became a temporary haven for anticipation and reflection.

The patient room proved to be a remarkably spacious and private haven. Dominating the room was a versatile hospital bed that could be reclined for comfort, accompanied by a smaller bed situated nearby. This thoughtful arrangement allowed space for relatives who came to provide care for the patient.

Situated on the 5th floor, the room offered a unique vantage point. On one side, a balcony extended, providing a panoramic view of the road below and the lush garden on the 4th floor. From this elevated perspective, the scenery unfolded in a picturesque manner, transforming the hospital stay into an experience touched by beauty. The outside world, though distant, felt surprisingly close as we gazed out from the balcony, appreciating the tranquil view that offered a brief respite from the medical proceedings unfolding within the hospital walls. The combination of space, comfort, and a pleasing view turned the patient room into a comforting retreat, allowing for moments of reflection and serenity amidst the pre-surgery preparations.

At approximately 11:00 a.m., a nurse, accompanied by a stretcher, arrived at the patient room to transport my husband to the operating room. The mention of laparoscopic surgery brought a sense of relief, knowing that it typically involves smaller incisions and less postoperative pain compared to traditional open abdominal surgery.

The advantages of laparoscopic surgery extended beyond the reduced discomfort. Post-surgery, the recovery period was streamlined, requiring just one night's stay in the hospital before being able to return home. However, the convenience and comfort associated with laparoscopic procedures often come with a higher price tag compared to conventional surgery.

As the medical team prepared to wheel my husband towards the operating room, the prospect of laparoscopic surgery offered reassurance in terms of a quicker recovery and minimized discomfort. It was a choice made not only for the medical benefits but also for the prospect of a swifter return to the familiar comforts of home.

I dropped my husband off in front of the operating room, the nurse kindly informed me that the surgery would take some time. With the assurance that they would check on his condition approximately 3 hours after the procedure, I took advantage of the moment to address my own needs. Since the morning, I hadn't had a chance to eat.

Given the options of a nearby Starbucks and a cafeteria, I opted for the latter on the first floor. The cafeteria offered a diverse array of food choices at affordable prices. I settled on a plate of rice mixed with shrimp paste and accompanied it with a refreshing bottle of water. The combination of delicious food and reasonable prices made the cafeteria an appealing choice.

As I sat down to savor the meal, the flavors provided a brief respite from the anxious waiting period. The bustling atmosphere of the cafeteria became a backdrop to a moment of self-care, a necessary pause in a day dominated by concerns for a loved one's health. In that simple meal, there was a touch of comfort and normalcy amid the hospital's hectic environment.

Having satisfied my hunger at the cafeteria, I made my way back to the patient room. To my surprise, a thoughtful hospital employee soon arrived with a tray containing sandwiches and soup, designating them as snacks. Grateful for the gesture, I chuckled to myself as I embarked on a second round of eating.

The aroma of the sandwiches and the warmth of the soup provided a comforting contrast to the earlier meal. Despite having eaten not long ago, the appetite seemed insatiable in the midst of the waiting period. With a sense of lightheartedness, I managed to finish the entire plate, a small indulgence that momentarily shifted the focus from worry to the simple pleasures of nourishment.

After approximately three hours, the dedicated nurses and stretcher staff returned my husband to the patient room for the recovery phase. It was evident that he was still experiencing a considerable amount of pain. The aftermath of anesthesia often leaves individuals in a state of exhaustion, and for my husband, this translated into a need for rest.

As the anesthesia gradually wore off, sleep became the primary recourse for alleviating discomfort. In the midst of this, a doctor arrived promptly to assess my husband's condition. The medical professional ordered a period of fasting, instructing him not to consume any food and limiting intake to water only. This precautionary measure aimed to ensure a smooth recovery process.

In the subdued atmosphere of the patient room, the focus shifted to providing comfort and support for my husband during this initial phase of recuperation. The pain and post-surgical instructions underscored the delicate nature of the immediate recovery period, highlighting the importance of vigilant care and adherence to medical guidance.

In the rhythm of post-surgery care, a routine was established. Every four hours, a dedicated nurse entered the room to monitor my husband's blood pressure and administer painkillers, ensuring his ongoing comfort and recovery. The regular check-ins and medication became a crucial part of the meticulous care provided by the medical team.

As morning light bathed the room around 7 a.m., the hospital staff arrived with a thoughtful gesture – a serving of chicken porridge and soybean milk. Recognizing that my husband hadn't eaten anything except drinking water since the surgery, the intention was to offer nourishment and aid the recovery process. However, my husband, still in the initial stages of recovery, found himself not yet hungry and insisted that I partake in the porridge instead.

Around 10 a.m., a nurse and a wheelchair attendant arrived to transport my husband for another ultrasound. Following the imaging procedure, we consulted with the doctor, who then scheduled a follow-up appointment to reassess his symptoms the following Wednesday.

With medical matters addressed, the next step involved settling the remaining financial obligations. Once the payment was completed, we returned to the patient's room to await the prescribed medications from the pharmacist.

During the wait, the hospital staff pleasantly surprised us by bringing in lunch. As we savored the meal, the atmosphere shifted from the clinical to the familial, offering a moment of comfort amid the post-surgery formalities.

After the medication was obtained and our meal was finished, we embarked on the journey back home. The hospital stay, marked by a blend of medical care, consultations, and unexpected acts of kindness, concluded as we transitioned from the hospital environment to the familiar comforts of home, carrying with us the promise of healing and recovery.
