A walk among the sugar cane fields to a disused sugar cane factory, Mauritius

In a small town called Fond du Sac, there is the small Tamil temple Raupadee Ammen Kovli. ( I have allready done a post about the temple). Right next to the temple runs a road called Belle Vue Pilot. The road is no more than two wheel tracks through the fields. A couple of weeks ago I took a walk along this road that leads to an old sugar factury, also calles Belle Vue Pilot. The only thing I could see from a distance was the chimney. My plan was to walk up to it and see what was left of it, so I followed the road from the temple.

So how come Mauritius has so many fields of sugar cane? The Dutch introduced the sugar canes. They were the first to start colonizing Mauritius. This happened in the 1600s and for the next 250 to 300 year this was a booming industry. When this industry was at it's hight, there were around 300 facturies spread out on this small island. When the demand for sugar decreased the factories were abandoned. There are still three factories (modern) on the island. When driving around the island you will see lots of old chimneys. Most often it's only the chimneys that are left. Though I have seen some where also the buildings still standing, though as ruins.

Unfortunately, it was not possible to enter. There is a fence all the way around. I went both to the left and tothe right, but it was only possible to enter. All I could see was the chimney. Along one side I could see stone foundations, but because all the trees, it was not possible to form a picture of what it might have looked like.
