On a trip to Tangse some time ago, an area in the interior of Aceh, I encountered a herd of buffalo looking for food in the rice fields. The water buffaloes move together with the herons from one rice field to another.
In addition to the Sumatran elephant and the tiger, buffalo is a large mammal that we often encounter in this area. The animal is led by an adult male buffalo which has a pair of long horns on its head.
Locals often release their livestock after the rice harvest season is over. The livestock are allowed to roam along the rice fields to look for food independently.
This local wisdom is one way for traditional Acehnese farmers to get natural fertilizer from livestock, which functions to fertilize rice fields.
I took this photo of a herd of buffalo in the residents' rice fields using a Nikon D300s camera.
Damn cool animals!
