[ENG-SPN] Medieval apocalypse / Apocalipsis medieval

Many of the marvelous medieval Spanish cathedrals contained apocalyptic references on some of their main portals, which determined a fundamental part of the beliefs and fears of the society of the time, whose people always remained at the mercy of that eternal struggle between two imperiously antagonistic forces: Good and Evil or, if you prefer, Light and Darkness. The result of this antagonistic confrontation was fully manifested in the lurid scenes of the Last Judgment and the resurrection of the dead, which the medieval stonemasons represented with a textuality, whose vision, on many occasions and even today, can reach transcend, causing the viewer to shudder involuntarily.

One of the clearest examples is found in the so-called Canon’s Door or Door of the Apostles, which is none other than one of the four main doors of the magnificent Cathedral of Santa María, in Burgos, which includes scenes, of course, very significant, in this sense, developed in the archivolts and following a pattern somewhat similar to the later idea of the Dantesque circles of the Divine Comedy, next to the Apostles and above all, around the main figure of Christ in Maiestas or in Majesty.

Muchas de las maravillosas catedrales medievales españolas, contenían, en alguna de sus portadas principales, referencias apocalípticas, que determinaban una parte primordial de las creencias y temores de la sociedad de la época, cuyas gentes, permanecían siempre a merced de esa eterna lucha entre dos fuerzas imperiosamente antagónicas: el Bien y el Mal o, si se prefiere, la Luz y las Tinieblas. El resultado de este enfrentamiento antagónico, quedaba, plenamente manifestado, en las escabrosas escenas del Juicio Final y la resurrección de los muertos, que los canteros medievales representaban con una textualidad, cuya visión, en muchas ocasiones e incluso hoy en día, puede llegar a trascender, haciendo que el espectador se estremezca involuntariamente.

Uno de los ejemplos más claros, lo encontramos en la denominada Puerta de los Canónigos o Puerta de los Apóstoles, que no es otra, que una de las cuatro puertas principales con las que cuenta la magnificente catedral de Santa María, de Burgos, que incluye escenas, desde luego, muy significativas, en este sentido, desarrolladas en las arquivoltas y siguiendo un patrón algo parecido a la posterior idea de los círculos dantescos de la Divina Comedia, a la vera de los Apóstoles y sobre todo, alrededor de la figura principal de Cristo in Maiestas o en Majestad.
