There's barely any room in that narrow alleyway, as long as the side of a 12th-century church, the tympanum of whose doorway shows the Apostle to whom it is dedicated, Saint James, riding in imitation of the famous charge of the British light cavalry in that place of carnage that history remembers as Balaklava, and a bar, whose small terrace becomes, to the visitor's amazement, an unparalleled viewpoint from which to admire the beauty of a portico, whose profusely illustrated archivolts tell ancient stories from the silence of the centuries.
We are in Betanzos, not too far from the place where the Knights Templar held a small commandery that they exchanged with King Alfonso X the Wise - interestingly, the remains of his rebellious brother, Infante Don Felipe, rest eternally in a magnificent tomb located inside the church of another important Templar commandery, that of Villalcázar de Sirga - for some land in Zamora and here, judging by some details, the Master of Santiago, like the Master of that other church near the ends of the earth and located near Muxía, which pilgrims know well, Saint Julian of Moraime, also left some relevant details in the characters.
It's impossible not to think, with my palate tempered by a good cup of coffee and an unsurpassed glass of orujo cream that replaces the magic of the famous queimadas, how calmly medieval artists exposed, for all to see, secrets that, however, few truly notice, and certainly fewer still those fortunate enough to understand. The time will come, however, when the Truth will no longer be hidden from the Light and, in addition to providing us with wisdom, will also set us truly free.
Apenas hay espacio, en esa bocacalle, estrecha y tan larga como el lateral de una iglesia del siglo XII, el tímpano de cuya portada muestra al Apóstol a quien está dedicada, Santiago, imitando, con su montura, la famosa carga de la caballería ligera británica en ese lugar de carnicería que la Historia recuerda con el nombre de Balaklava, y un bar, cuya pequeña terraza se convierte, para maravilla del visitante, en un espacio inigualable como mirador para admirar la belleza de un pórtico, cuyas arquivoltas, profusamente ilustradas, cuentan antiguas historias desde el silencio de los siglos.
Nos encontramos en Betanzos, no demasiado lejos, además, del lugar en el que los caballeros templarios tuvieron una pequeña encomienda que permutaron con el rey Alfonso X el Sabio -curiosamente, los restos de su levantisco hermano, el Infante Don Felipe, descansan eternamente en un magnífico sepulcro que se localiza en el interior de la iglesia de otra relevante encomienda templaria, la de Villalcázar de Sirga- por unas tierras en Zamora y aquí, a juzgar por algunos detalles, el Maestro de Santiago, como el Maestro de aquella otra iglesia cercana a los confines del mundo y que, situada en las proximidades de Muxía, conocen bien los peregrinos, San Julián de Moraime, también dejó señalados, en los personajes, algunos detalles relevantes.
Imposible no pensar, templado el paladar con un buen café y una insuperable copa de crema de orujo que sustituye la magia de las famosas queimadas, de qué calmada manera los artistas del Medievo exponían, a la vista de todos, unos secretos, que, no obstante, pocos son los que realmente reparan en ellos y desde luego, menos, todavía, aquellos afortunados capaces de comprenderlos. Tiempo llegará, no obstante, en el que la Verdad deje de estar oculta a la Luz y además de proporcionarnos sabiduría, nos haga también realmente libres.
