I have always tried to understand life, its paradoxes and even that metaphorical Ace of Spades, which, from my point of view, is always the circumstance, from an eminently romantic vision. Perhaps Romanticism, deep down, is an ally of that dream of Reason, regardless of the fact that, as Francisco de Goya stated, it sometimes produces monsters. Surely, for this reason, I have always tended to compare the figure of the watchmaker with that of the tamer: each one, in their own way and within their sphere of influence, works at the limit of the impossible, a statement that we can better understand if we take into account, which, both one and the other, try to introduce manners into what obeys only their own nature. Much more complicated, still, is the case of the first, because if the tamer has the advantage of being able to influence the instinct of the animal and mold it, more or less at will, the watchmaker, on the contrary, is always at the mercy of the unpredictable.
Possibly for this reason, observing, for days, the hours of dedication and effort put into the Madrid watchmakers in the famous clock at Puerta del Sol - the whole of Spain will be looking out for him tonight, to bid farewell to a year and welcome him to another- with nerves on the surface so that no failure can cloud the emotion of the moment, it seems to me such a heroic act and at the same time, so charged with romantic emotion, that even I am surprised, because the same thing happens to me that to Dante, that more than halfway through my life, I should want time to pass as slowly as possible. And yet I can't wait to hear the twelve chimes, gleefully consume my twelve grapes, and toast the New Year. Can they explain it to you? To me, the truth, only one thing occurs to me: the Magic of Christmas. Happy 2023 to all.
Siempre he intentado entender la vida, sus paradojas e incluso ese metafórico As de Picas, que, bajo mi punto de vista, es siempre la circunstancia, desde una visión, eminentemente romántica. Puede que el Romanticismo, en el fondo, sea aliado de ese sueño de la Razón, independientemente de que, como sentenciara Francisco de Goya, en ocasiones, produzca monstruos. Seguramente, por ello, siempre he tendido a comparar la figura del relojero con la del domador: cada uno, a su manera y en su ámbito de influencia, trabajan en el límite de lo imposible, afirmación que podemos entender mejor, si tenemos en cuenta, que, tanto el uno como el otro, intentan introducir modales en aquello que obedece tan sólo a su propia naturaleza. Mucho más complicado, todavía, es el caso del primero, pues si el domador cuenta con la ventaja de poder influir en el instinto del animal y moldearlo, más o menos a su antojo, el relojero, por el contrario, queda siempre a merced de lo impredecible.
Posiblemente por ello, observar, durante días, las horas de dedicación y el esfuerzo empleado por los relojeros madrileños en el famoso reloj de la Puerta del Sol -España entera, estará esta noche pendiente de él, para despedir a un año y darle la bienvenida a otro- con los nervios a flor de piel para que ningún fallo pueda enturbiar la emoción del momento, me parece un acto tan heroico y a la vez, tan cargado de romántica emotividad, que hasta yo mismo me sorprendo, pues me ocurre lo mismo que a Dante, que más que mediada ya mi vida, debería desear que el tiempo transcurriera lo más lento posible. Y, sin embargo, estoy deseando oír las doce campanadas, consumir con gozo mis doce uvas y brindar por el Año Nuevo. ¿Se lo pueden explicar?. A mí, la verdad, sólo se me ocurre una cosa: la Magia de la Navidad. Feliz 2023 para todos.
