Create The Atmosphere
Among so many factors to consider when creating a photo, the most important thing for me is to Create The Atmosphere, because although the subject does not seem the most interesting to us, a good atmosphere in the composition creates that kind of enveloping magic and help us to tell the story in a more authentic way.
I took this photo at the house of my sister and her husband one day when I saw my friend Virginia again after at least 15 years. She is an excellent singer and I became her fan many years ago and even once I broke my ankle I asked to be taken to the shopping center on Sunday afternoons to the place where she sang, good times!
That day Virginia came with her guitar and we decided to remember old times sitting on the living room floor while she sang and we asked her for songs from the 90s.
I decided to take some photos that will take me back to those years when we went without fail on Sundays to see her sing. An intimate photo, a photo where she was the star, in which she is the center as well as when you go to a concert and enjoy the band and the rest does not exist. For me that would be a photo that represents her as an artist.
For this, I first thought about the feeling that this very nice memory generates, then I thought or imagined a telescopic view (if that makes sense), image some lighting elements of a theater such as the rear light and the main light and since I did not have a wide background, the wood-lined wall seemed perfect to me, what is more cozy than a wooden house?, and it was when I applied the fact that what really matters is what is shown within the frame of the photo and that's when I borrowed the lights from my brother-in-law Andy and organized the set. You can take a photo that looks like you are on a bowling alley on top of Everest, just worry about what will be shown in the photo ... and the cold, and the lack of oxygen, etc! LOL
After my set was ready, I asked Virginia to sit in the chair and asked her to sing and I took several photos looking for the special moment when she was smiling and focused on the song.
We also talk about those years when she sang in the shopping center, details and memories of that time and this is very important since for me in 99.9% of cases the last thing is to take the photo, the first thing is to create that atmosphere in our minds, and I say ours because both the subject and the photographer must swim in those memories, stories, feelings, it does not matter if it is a client that you do not know because your job then is to take time to know their history since It will be you who will take the photo and if you are not emotionally involved I do not think you can get great results.
Keep in mind that the atmosphere must be created by the photographer, you must be nourished, intoxicated, imagine your subject’s experiences and this applies to everything because if someone hires you only for a portrait, you must know how to show that person to others through your photo, and that is a great responsibility because otherwise you are going to lie to everyone.

Crear La Atmósfera
Entre tantos factores a considerar al momento de crear una foto, lo más importante para mí es Crear La Atmósfera, porque aunque el sujeto no nos parezca el más interesante, una buena atmósfera en la composición crea esa suerte de magia envolvente y nos ayuda a contar la historia de una manera más auténtica.
Esta foto la tomé en la casa de mi hermana y su esposo un día que volví a ver a mi amiga Virginia después de al menos 15 años. Ella es una excelente cantante y me volví su fan hace muchos años e incluso na vez que me rompí un tobillo pedía que me llevaran cargado al centro comercial los domingos en las tardes al sitio donde ella cantaba, ¡buenos tiempos!
Ese día Virginia vino con su guitarra y decidimos recordar viejos tiempos sentados en el piso de la sala mientras ella cantaba y nosotros le pedíamos canciones de los 90s.
Decidí hacerle unas fotos que me trasladarán a esos años en los que íbamos sin falta los domingo a verla cantar. Una foto íntima, una foto donde ella fuera la estrella, en la que ella sea el centro así como cuando vas a un concierto y disfrutas de la banda y lo demás no existe. Para mi esa sería una foto que la representara como artista.
Para ello primero pensé en el sentimiento que me genera a mi ese recuero an bonito, luego pensé o imaginé una vista telescópica (si eso tiene sentido), imagen algunos elementos de iluminación de un teatro como lo es la luz trasera y la principal y en vista de que no disponía de un fondo amplio me pareció perfecta la pared forrada de madera, ¿qué más acogedor que una casa madera?, y fue cuando apliqué el hecho de que lo que realmente importa es lo que se muestra dentro del encuadre de la foto y fue cuando le pedí las luces prestadas a mi cuñado Andy y organicé el set. Puedes hacer una foto que parezca que estás en una cancha de bolos en la cima del Everest, sólo debes preocuparte de lo que se mostrará en la foto... ¡y del frío, y la falta de oxígeno, etc! ¡JA!
Luego de mi set estaba listo, le pedí a Virginia que se sentara en la silla y le pedí que cantara e hice varias fotos buscando el momento especial en el que ella sonreía y estaba concentrada en la canción.
También hablamos de aquellos años en los que ella cantaba en el centro comercial, de detalles y recuerdos de esa época y esto es importantísimo ya que para mi en el 99,9% de los casos lo último es tomar la foto, lo primero es crear esa atmósfera en nuestras mentes, y digo nuestras porque tanto el sujeto como el fotógrafo deben nadar en esos recuerdos, historias, sentimientos, no importa si es un cliente al que no conoces porque tu trabajo entonces es tomarte un tiempo para conocer su historia ya que serás tú quien tomará la foto y si no estás involucrado emocionalmente no creo que puedas obtener mejores resultados.
Ten en cuenta que la atmósfera debe crearla el fotógrafo, debes nutrirte, intoxicarte, imaginar con el sujeto sus vivencias y esto aplica para todo porque si alguien te contrata solo para un retrato, pues debes saber mostrar a esa persona a los demás a través de tu foto, y esa es una gran responsabilidad porque sino vas a mentirle a todos.
