Unless the scientists deliberately plan for either telescope to take a photograph of the other, there is very little chance for it to happen unintentionally because of the size of the Earth's thermosphere. The chances are astronomically low.

I agree. My suggestion is that it would be done as a non-scientific mission, which tend to happen at the end of the lifetime of a project. Eg. Voyager photographing Earth, New Horizons being part of a stereoscopic photo of Proxima Centauri, Curiosity rover taking a selfie and singing Happy Birthday (though those were not at end of life).
