I was riding along as my wife drove the car. We were following the map and chasing down a good place to put kayaks in the water. Prior to leaving the house, I had been chatting on Discord to help figure out the basics of how to participate in this initiative, and when this song came on while we were driving I thought, I'm going to print this out super early in the morning and record it so I can get my submission in - I’m really glad this first-time-site-read came out as well as it did, and I’m very excited to be joining greats like MobeyDick on the Hive Music Festival circuit!
I chose this song because Anna Kendrick used this song as her audition in that a cappella movie, and hearing it in the car reminded me of my audition here with the Hive Music Festival! I thought her performance in this movie was incredible, and I hope I was able to bring my own authentic enthusiasm to this cover for the Festival!
Last night, as we drove home from the water, I set my intentions that I would wake up an hour earlier than usual to give myself time to print the lyrics and find a well lit but isolated environment that would enable me to play this song super early in the morning without waking people up or disturbing the neighborhood. Honestly, I try to do that quite often, and usually when the alarm goes off at 4:00AM I can’t remember why I set it for so early…so I go back to sleep, only to remember my plans once it’s too late! But today was good, I got right up at 4:00, made lunches for my girls and also for my wife and myself, and was out the door with lyrics in hand and an hour to spare before work.
For those of you who’ve been following my recent work here it will come as no surprise, but for those of you who are just getting to know me, I do a lot of site-reading, which means I print out the chords and lyrics, set up a place to play, and I record the song without practicing or learning it; this works best with songs I’ve heard before, although with songs I haven’t heard before it can be really fun to do this and see the differences between my blind interpretation and the original.
Anyway, thank you so much for checking it out, I am very excited to be a part of the Hive Music Festival!
