Our backyard baby birds also jumped out of their nest box at a seemingly young age. Turned out one of their siblings died inside and one parent was missing, too. They jumped out not to get infected by the dead body. Luckily two seemed to have survived.

Somehow they prefer crash landing in empty buckets :D
