Hello everyone , for this week's challenge i thought of cooking some simple but traditional and delicious dish.
Am from Kerala,India. Most of the Malayalies (natives of kerala) are foodies and for us the position of food is much higher than that of other aspects of life.
We have many traditional and famous vegan dishes like Puttu, idli, uppumavu, appam, dosa etc. For this challenge,am gonna share the recipe of the simple and traditional puttu. Every Malayalies love Puttu for their breakfasts. There are more than 50 types of Puttu. In this post am gonna share about the rice puttu.
Inorder to prepare puttu you have to buy the best quality rice like basmati rice.
Like 15 years ago, my grandfather had acres of rice fields and our family never bought any rice from grocery stores at that time . But now all the paddy and rice fields are vanishing from our state because of constructions and other factors.
So much of my story telling .. lets get on to the cooking....
- Inorder to prepare puttu, first we have to rinse the rice for like an hour or two. Then dry it. No problem if it is slightly wet. Then put it in a mixer grinder .
2.Before grinding the rice add some salt
3.Grind the rice for like 5 minutes and then take the freshly prepared rice powder from the grinder.
4 The next thing we need is coconut shavings.
There are 7 coconut trees in my yard so there is no need to buy it from stores.
5.Traditionally puttu was made inside the cocunt shell. But now there are steaming apparatuses which are close adaptation to this traditional coconut shell method. Am using such an apparatus called chiratta puttu maker.
First put the coconut shavings in the bottom of the apparutus and then the rice powder on top of it and again put the coconut shavings on top.
6.Close the chiratta puttu maker and place it on top of the pressure cooker and steam it for like 10 minutes.
voilà ....... our delicious Puttu is ready...
You can add some honey if you want , before placing the apparatus on top of the cooker.
It is the best, when served with kadala curry or cherupayaru curry.

I don't think I've ever heard of puttu before, love the preparation, looks delicious. I think you and I both have Hawkins pressure cookers, but I have never seen the cool contraption used to replace the pressure cooker weight. This is absolutely genius, and now I want to buy one of these to put on top of my pressure cooker.

Its actually is a chirattaputtu maker. Its very cheap but effective. Am so glad that you liked my dish.
Shame cool things like this aren't available here in Suriname because it is a small country with a small population. Although the population is majority ethnic Indian, they don't like traditional Indian foods and flavors, so even things like a idli steamer aren't available.
I may just have to make one out of coconut shell to give this a try.
That would be great. Traditionaly puttu was made in coconut shells.
If I am not wrong puttu is also eaten with banana? I remember once my Keralite friend gave me puttu with banana.
Yeaaa.. it is eaten with banana.. we can also use pappadam as a side dish. And thank you for pointing it out for me.
I don't know the puttu, thanks to you I have discovered it and I would love to prepare something like this, it looks very delicious. The combination of coconut with rice is good, in my country we have a dessert called ''arroz con coco'', but it is nothing like a puttu. That one is sweet and with a lot of cinnamon powder. Besides, I see that it is very easy to prepare puttu, I will try it.
Thank you very much for sharing this recipe. Blessings from Venezuela.
