Desde pequeña, uno de mis momentos mágicos preferidos era cuando veía a las luciérnagas o cocuyos en la noche, lo cual casi siempre pasaba en el campo cuando iba de vacaciones, pues en ese tiempo yo vivía en una ciudad y era muy raro que en Venezuela existiesen problemas con el suministro de energía eléctrica. El observar esas pequeñas lucecitas danzar en la oscuridad simplemente me embelesaba, y podía pasar largo rato sin moverme para no molestarlas. En un principio solo las veía, sin atreverme a capturarlas, imaginando que eran pequeñas estrellas bailarinas que habían caído del cielo. Luego, un día, papá quien es ingeniero agrónomo y sabe de entomología, tomó una y sujetándola delicadamente con su enorme mano me explicó que eran insectos de la familia de los coleópteros con bioluminiscensia la cual usaban para hablar entre ellas. Escuché atentamente su explicación y la entendí (él explicaba todo muy bien), pero seguí imaginando el largo viaje estelar de las luciérnagas.
Since I was little, one of my favorite magical moments was when I saw fireflies or cocuyos at night, which almost always happened in the countryside when I went on vacation, because at that time I lived in a city and it was very rare that in Venezuela there was problems with the electricity supply. Watching those little lights dance in the dark just made me ecstatic, and I could go a long time without moving so as not to disturb them. At first I only saw them, not daring to capture them, imagining that they were little dancing stars that had fallen from the sky. Then, one day, Dad, who is an agricultural engineer and knows entomology, took one and gently holding it with his huge hand explained to me that they were insects from the bioluminescensial family of beetles, which they used to talk to each other. I listened carefully to his explanation and understood it (he explained everything very well), but I kept imagining the long stellar journey of the fireflies.

Desde ese tiempo a la actualidad han pasado décadas, durante las cuales seguí experimentando el mismo éxtasis cada vez que veía a las luciérnagas brillar, es más, luego me atreví a acercarme a donde ellas volaban y ver cómo se prendían a mi cabello y ropa mientras seguían titilando.
Decades have passed from that time to the present day, during which I continued to experience the same ecstasy every time I saw the fireflies shine, what's more, then I dared to approach where they flew and see them catch on my hair and clothes while they kept blinking.
Ahora, me he dado cuenta que lamentablemente cada vez hay menos luciérnagas, de hecho, las últimas las vi hace aproximadamente 10 años y fue debajo de la planta de trillolit que tengo en el centro de mi casa. En esa oportunidad fueron muy pocas, unas tres, lo que me extrañó. Hace cuatro meses más o menos, estando de noche en la cocina de mi casa, llegó una pequeña luciérnaga y lamentablemente sin darme cuenta la maté, luego no podía con el pesar y la tristeza (aún me siento así), al comprobar que había apagado una pequeña estrella.
Now, I have seen that unfortunately there are less and less fireflies, in fact, the last ones I saw about 10 years ago and it was under the trillolit plant that I have in the center of my house. At that time there were very few, about three which surprised me. Four months or so ago, being at night in the kitchen of my house, a small firefly arrived and unfortunately I killed her, then I could not with regret and sadness (I still feel that way), when I verified that I had turned off a little star.

Este sentimiento me llevó a preguntarme ¿a dónde se fueron las luciérnagas? ¿En dónde están?, y obviamente sé la respuesta: En la nada, en el pasado porque van rumbo a la extinción; y esa certeza me carcome el alma y me entristece, porque también sé que si como especie humana seguimos con la creencia que somos superiores, continuamos siendo irrespetuosos con Madre Tierra y mantenemos esa posición de superioridad, de ser depredadores y amos absolutos de la naturaleza, irremediablemente no sólo nos preguntaremos a dónde se fueron las luciérnagas, sino, a dónde se fueron las abejas, las mariposas, los pájaros, las lombrices, los osos, las nutrias, las plantas, las flores... No permitamos que esas preguntas (de las cuales sabemos las respuestas), nos abrumen algún día en un futuro cercano, y de paso tengamos que acompañar a las luciérnagas en su viaje. Un gran abrazo.
This feeling led me to wonder where did the fireflies go? Where are they ?, and obviously I know the answer: In the nothing, in the past because they are heading towards extinction; and that certainty eats away at my soul and saddens me, because I also know that if as a human species we continue with the belief that we are superior, we continue to be disrespectful towards Mother Earth and maintain that position of superiority, of being predators and absolute masters of nature, Hopelessly we will not only wonder where the fireflies went, but where the bees, butterflies, birds, earthworms, bears, otters, plants, flowers went ... Let's not allow those questions ( of which we know the answers), will overwhelm us someday in the near future, and incidentally we will have to accompany the fireflies on their journey. A big hug.

Las luciérnagas son muy bonitas, aquí donde vivo las hay, últimamente han entrado mucho en el apartamento.

I'm reading more and more of late that insect populations seem to be declining, which is so sad. Even bird populations have declined from what we used to see as children.

Yo también recuerdo verlas en mayor cantidad en mi infancia, y contaban toda clase de historias sobre ellas, que llevaban a tesoros enterrados . Siempre me pareció impresionante que un ser pudiera generar su propia luz, hoy también veo que son menos en el jardín, pero siempre me emociono al verlas.

The fireflies' flickering light is their own language, a way of spreading unique love to the world. They are stars down on the field. We human don't understand that, we just feel happy to chase them.
