Si han leído previamente mi blog, ya sabrán que tengo un trozo de paraíso en mi casa, y este es mi solar, un pedazo de bosque y huerto al mismo tiempo, en donde aprovecho para conectarme a la energía maravillosa del planeta; y es que dudo que yo pueda vivir sin tener aunque sea una pequeña porción de naturaleza a mi lado. En este espacio siembro algunos alimentos para mí y mi familia, y es esto precisamente lo que les he traído hoy, pues la semana pasada fue tiempo de cosechar TOPOCHOS, una musácea o banana, muy rendidora, altamente nutritiva, exquisita y con muchísimas utilidades, además de ser muy resistente al estrés hídrico, situación que mis plantas lastimosamente sufren con frecuencia, ya que en donde vivo no hay suministro de agua, y adquirirla es muy muy costoso; sin embargo, hago mi mejor esfuerzo para aportarle el vital líquido a todos mis vegetales.

In this space I grow some food, for me and my family, and this is precisely what I have brought you today, because last week it was time to harvest TOPOCHOS, a musaceae or banana, very yielding, highly nutritious, exquisite and with many utilities Besides being very resistant to hydric stress, a situation that my plants unfortunately suffer frequently, since where I live there is no water supply, and acquiring it is very very expensive; however, I do my best to add the vital liquid to all my vegetables.
Los topochos, cuyo nombre científico es Musa paradisiaca L., corresponden al grupo Musa ABB. Cada planta produce una sola bellota durante su existencia, aunque en casos excepcionales produce dos. También genera aproximadamente entre 8-10 vástagos. Los hijos comienzan a emerger cuando el topocho tiene unos 4 meses de vida. La bellota surge a los 8 meses, y desde este momento, hasta que pueda ser cosechada, deben transcurrir entre 3½ y 4 meses. Por lo general, si la planta está sana, la bellota puede dar entre 7 y 9 manos de topochos, incluso hasta 11. Generalmente en la punta quedan inflorescencias que quienes cultivan topochos con fines comerciales cercenan, pero en mi caso las dejo, ya que las abejas y colibríes las liban; además, al caer, los morrocoyes las comen. Seguidamente les comparto algunas de mis publicaciones previas, en donde expongo las utilidades del topocho:
The topochos, whose scientific name is Musa paradisiaca L., belong to the Musa ABB group. Each plant produces a single acorn during its existence, although in exceptional cases it produces two. It also spawns approximately 8-10 scions. The scions begin to emerge when the topocho is about 4 months old. The acorn emerges at 8 months, and from this moment, until it can be harvested, between 3½ and 4 months must elapse. In general, if the plant is healthy, the acorn can give between 7 and 9 hands of topochos, even up to 11. Esta planta que ven en la foto, corresponde a una de las seis macoyas de musáceas que tengo en mi solar. Tenía siete, pero una de plátano murió a causa de los ácaros. La bellota de la fotografía emergió a inicios de Octubre 2020, la coseché unos 15 días antes del tiempo ideal, porque como pueden ver la mata está totalmente doblada e inclinada, ya no soportaba el peso. Esta bellota dio un total de 9 manos de topochos, y pueden ver la punta arrastrándose al piso.
This plant that you see in the photo, corresponds to one of the six macoya musaceae that I have on my site. He was seven years old, but a banana died of mites. The acorn in the photograph emerged at the beginning of October 2020, I harvested it about 15 days before the ideal time, because as you can see, the bush is completely bent and tilted, it no longer supported the weight. This acorn gave a total of 9 hands of topocho, and you can see the tip, with the inflorescences, crawling to the ground.
Lo bueno de sembrar en macoyas, (una macoya es un grupo de plantas, generalmente yo dejo cuatro en una misma), es que una planta da sus frutos, se cosecha, y como ya no dará más frutos, es cortada a nivel de un tercio de su extensión, y se dejan dos tercios para que siga aportando humedad a la macoya, pues las musáceas almacenan mucha agua, y esta va escurriendo al suelo. Las plantas compañeras que quedan en la macoya siguen fructificando, como pueden ver en esa hermosa bellota que nació a inicios de Enero 2021; en abril de este año tendré otra cosecha, y también en febrero y marzo, pues solo esta macoya tiene tres racimos en crecimiento.
The good thing about sowing in macoyas, (a macoya is a group of plants, I generally leave four in the same), is that a plant bears its fruits, it is harvested, and since you will no longer bear fruit, it is cut down to the level of a third of its extension, and two thirds are left so that it continues to provide moisture to the macoya, since the musaceae store a lot of water, and this is draining to the ground. The companion plants that remain in the macoya continue to bear fruit, as you can see in that beautiful acorn that was born in early January 2021; in April of this year I will have another harvest, and also in February and March, as only this macoya has three growing bunches.
Mi esposo y yo cosechamos esta enorme bellota, que dio un total de 9 manos de topochos, con un peso total aproximado a los 28 Kg. Con esta cosecha regalé a mis familiares y amigos, y estoy haciendo tajadas fritas, torta, pastel de carne con topocho, tostones, panquecas y cuando están maduros me los como crudos pues su sabor es similar al de un cambur manzano, aunque su textura es distinta, pues la pulpa es más blanda. Las cáscaras sirven para que la tribu de morrocoyes coma y las cocino en la comida de mis perras. También pico otras y las añado a la tierra para que la enriquezcan.
My husband and I harvested this huge acorn, which gave a total of 9 hands of tpocohos, with a total weight of approximately 28 kg. With this harvest I gave one part to my family and friends, the rest I take and I am making fried slices, cake, meatloaf with topocho, tostones, pancakes and when they are mature I eat them raw because their flavor are similar to those of an apple banana, although their texture is different, since the pulp is softer. The shells are used for the Morrocoyes tribe to eat and I cook them in the food of my dogs. I also pick others and add them to the earth to enrich it.
