Dinner with harvest from gardens /

in Foodies Bee Hive2 months ago

Last week I went to do maintenance on the community garden containers for the first time in a while and got some leeks. One had even been pulled out and was lying in the container 😢 Luckily it was still fresh.

I was kind of proud to put the harvest in a box like this and take it home on tram. In addition to the leeks, there were chervil, endive, and lambs lettuce.

I was thinking about what to make, and since it was quite cold today, I decided to make a classic winter dish of leek-potatoes gratin. It's easy to make. I sauteed leek and mushrooms with salt and pepper, and steam cooked them with slices of potatoes. Then topped with white sauce and cheese, it's baked in the oven.

While it was in the oven, I decided to make a salad using the lambs lettuce from the community garden. Lambs lettuce, "Feldsalat" in German, is a winter specialty and is often used in winter salads. Their season will be over soon. It is a valuable leafy vegetable that can survive the cold German winters. I sprinkle the seeds here and there every fall, then they are ready when I forget about them. What a nice plant!

I had some spinach that I had just thinned out, so I decided to put it in a salad as well. The long one in the bowl is the spinach.

I added lettuce, cucumber and kohlrabi that I had in the fridge and made a salad. It's nice to see the spring light green colors.

The gratin is baked and ready to serve.

My partner and my daughter don't seem to like the strong taste of raw onions, so we don't include them in salads. Instead, I add pickled red onions that I've prepared in bulk, like in the initial photo, just for myself.

It feels great to be able to use vegetables that I've grown myself—well, more accurately, vegetables that have mostly grown on their own—for our meals, even if it's just a little amount. I hope to gradually increase the amount of vegetables I grow myself until I become a grandma.

Also, I was really happy when my daughter asked for seconds of the salad, saying, "This salad is delicious! Can I have some more?" Actually she asked third serving too. Haha, I was really really happy.

That's it. I look forward the upcoming gardening season and cooking with the harvest.
