Breaded cauliflower cutlet sandwich B.I.S.S.

This is my entry to B.I.S.S. which is brought to you by @mondoshawan who was once a fierce and dedicated competitor in a sandwich contest given by @jaybird who has since spread his wings and landed on a piano keyboard where he remains.

I was there as an oddball who had nothing but plant based sandwiches. It was a nice get together and I met quite a few friends like @lizelle the master chef that makes everything drool worthy.

Today I come with another plant based sandwich.

I had gone to the supermarket across the street which has a poor selection and overpriced. To my astonishment I saw a bin of cauliflower for a dollar each. I have seen cauliflower for as much as eight dollars before.

Yes you bet I grabbed four heads. I should have grabbed more and put them in the freezer. In these times you never know if you'll need to reach for an emergency supply of cauliflower.

There was no doubt that this would be in my sandwich. But who eats a cauliflower sandwich? I would have to make it fun so I sliced it and made some cutlets out of it.

I used chickpea flour which I ground up from dried chickpeas. I thought I would keep it gluten free. That didn't happen.

I added a dash of salt, pepper, paprika, thyme, cumin, garlic powder and onion powder.

I made a slurry out of soy milk and tapioca starch. I dipped the cauliflower in the chickpea flour, then the slurry then the panko.

At this point it changed from gluten free to not gluten free. This was going to make it more fun.

DSC_2110.jpg

To keep the damage down I browned it in a pan with oil then put it in the oven on 400F to cook completely. It was nice and crispy on the outside.

At the end I decided to go into a direction of sweet and spicy Asian-ish sauce. I chopped up some sweet peppers, jalapeno pepper which is all I had for heat, garlic, onion, and ginger. I added soy sauce, agave nectar, rice vinegar, and a little tapioca starch. I would have used cornstarch but I didn't have any. It worked fine as a thickener.

The bread was slightly redeeming. It was spelt which was low gluten. It was nicely toasted in the oven, because I don't have a toaster.

DSC_2144.jpg

I put the cauliflower on the bread moving it around to make it fit. A bun would have been easier.

DSC_2146.jpg

The sauce and some lettuce would be all that could fit. The sauce did the job of any other ingredients.

DSC_2148.jpg

I had to press it down a bit to manage it.

Don't forget to make your sandwiches and drop them in the post folks. Everyone makes sandwiches. No excuses!

Have a great day!

I needed a good chuckle today and you've brought that on, I can just picture @jaybird stuck to his piano for the rest of his life if he doesn't get up soon and make one of his famous manwiches:)
How about it @jaybird, or are we not shouting loud enough? A man's gotta eat in between making music!!
@carolynstahl, trust you to make a caulifower sandwich and get it to look this delicious!
I just loved your whole blog AND sandwich, brilliantly done my vegan foodie friend!

Thanks so much @lizelle! This has always created a fun atmosphere. Where is that @jaybird? We will have to search for him before the month is over.

I love sandwiches. Every time we bought bread my sister always ask my mom to make sandwiches but I make it. I never try cauliflower sandwiches before. I never heard of cauliflower sandwiches but its sounds good anyway. I would love to try them someday. Have a good day to you @carolynstahl.

Thank you @kidsisters! I guess you can put anything in between two pieces of bread and call it a sandwich haha.

Looks like a mighty tasty sandwich indeed. We used to make a our own version of Bahn Mi back in Cambodia, but we had access to good Vietnamese style baguettes there. Here in Suriname the bread is horrendous, so I don't get much sandwich cravings these days.

However, I am all over this sandwich. !ENGAGE 10

Too bad. I can imagine Vietnamese baguettes would be awesome.

Yes, you are right.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Ooh yum! That's an amazing price for cauliflower! I probably would have grabbed a bunch, too. The cauliflower sounds great on its own, but I bet the sandwich all together was even better!

Thanks @plantstoplanks I think I'll go and see if there is any left. Cauliflower will be shoved into my fridge and freezer haha.

Haha, you can never have too much!

Wow, now that is some real awesomeness... i have to hide this one from my love. She would make me do that for her... hahaha. Thanks a lot for participating Carolyn!

Thanks @mondoshawan I am sure she doesn't need to go further than your monster stacks haha!

Your food always looks delicious !!! I love cauliflowers very much but here not have it now. When I have it I try your recipe but I hungry now.

Thank you @sreypov. @justinparke says the bread in Suriname is not good. I would love to see you post a sandwich. You don't have to use regular bread. You could use something else. You two are very creative.

I know how to make sandwiches style my country but another country I don’t know how to make. Justin he a good chef, he made sandwiches very delicious.

This sounds like such an awesome and yummy sandwich! I love cauliflower and your sauce sounds like a perfect match! Thanks for entering the B.I.S.S. competition! 😋

Stop it girl. You are too good!!!

haha oh please!

@JustinParke here on behalf of NaturalMedicine.io.

You could bread just about anything and I would gladly devour it. If the spice mix was right, you could probably bread and fry/bake a flip-flop and I'd still eat it! However, this recipe is special because far too many cooks refuse to get creative with cauliflower. I especially love pickled cauliflower, both Indian and Israeli style. Oh I forgot to mention that sauce you made too, nom nom nom.

Thanks @carolynstahl for sharing this with us.

Thank you @justinparke and @naturalmedicine! When there is a sale on cauliflower you just have to get creative. I have given cauliflower a second chance in my life haha.
