How often do we end up throwing away excess food without a thought for those less fortunate?
If only we could learn from the opening song from the musical Oliver and stop and think a little...
Food glorious food Written by Lawrence Jeffcoate
Is it worth the waiting for
If we live 'till eighty-four
All we ever get is
Gruel
Everyday we say our prayer
Will they change the bill of fare
Still we get the same old
Gruel
There's not a crust
Not a crumb
Can we find
Can we beg
Can we borrow or cadge
But there's nothing to stop us from getting a thrill
When we all close our eyes and imagine
Food, glorious food
Hot sausage and mustard
While we're in the mood
Cold jelly and custard....
Just the thought of someone going hungry while I have way too much, makes me bow my head in shame, but what I do now is to dish leftovers into a plastic container and keep it frozen till the garbage collection day!
There actually are people who come scratching in our bins looking for food, so we leave the leftovers in a separate bag for them to take.
Now that the trainees are back in full force in our BnB and we have to provide meals, there is plenty of leftovers as I do provide large portions.
We have never had any leftovers when it's Chocolate Cupcakes, or the mini milk tarts, I wonder why?
Nor any desserts like this delectable double think fruity yogurt served with Tamarillo and Bananas as well as the creamy blancmange.
Walking in our lush garden down to the cottage makes me realise once again just what a wonderful world we live in and it's right here on our doorstep!
But we're here to look at the food I've been serving our young guests, so here is a pictorial menu, hope you enjoy it;)
Shell noodles with Basil, Tomato & Onion sauce for a meatless meal
Pasta Bake with Sweetcorn
A simple Omelette
Sweet & sour Sausages & onions served on creamy mashed Potato & fresh Vegetables
A hearty melt in the mouth Beef & Onion served with rice, Butternut and young green Beans
Peas, pudding and saveloys
What next is the question
Rich gentlemen have it, boys
In-die-gestion!
(Uggh)
Food, glorious food
We're anxious to try it
Three banquets a day
Our favorite diet
Just picture a great big steak
Fried, roasted or stewed
But food
Wonderful food
Marvelous food
Glorious
Food!
And so we come to the end of the song from Oliver, did you take note of the words, especially In-die-gestion!
Hope I didn't give you that!
But always remember to spare some for those who come knocking at your door asking for a scrap of food; something happening more often in our part of the world; or it may just be that they think a BnB will always have scraps to give away?!
