Sometimes A Random Act of Kindness Requires Doing Something I Really Hate

in Foodies Bee Hive3 years ago (edited)

I don't bake. I really hate it - I hate following recipes, I hate having to be fairly exact, and I'm not even a huge fan of sugar. I loathe tidying up after myself, especially flour.

So when my son's girlfriend, locked down with him in Melbourne, told me about how her and her friends were sending baked goods to each other through the post last lockdown, I laughed. Actually, I think my exact words were something like: 'Get f**ked, I love you guys, but not so much I'd bake goods for you, let alone send them'.

Then I started thinking. A lot. I thought about how much I DO love them, and how they've been in lockdown longer than me. Making some ginger biscuits and sending then through the post would be a nice thing to do, right? And it WAS raining outside. So... biscuits then.

The recipe I followed was this one mainly as it was the first one that came up when I searched 'chai ginger biscuits'. Go look at the recipe - with their henna style patterns on them, they are UBER cute.

Of course, I had to change things up a bit. I didn't have masala chai, but I did have a whole spice chai mix that I could put through a coffee grinder. I added twice the amount of fresh ginger. I used vegan butter, as that's all I had.

I also used some orange zest as I had a big box of them given to me via community exchange networks.

I folded calendula flowers through the dough when I rolled it out to cut with a glass. I then pressed the flowers into the biscuits for that little cheerful orange pop. Oh, and I used half the amount of sugar, because I never like things that sweet.

I made a dusting for them out of sugar and chai spice, and rough ground dried calendula flowers.

Then off I toddled to the post office and sent a box of biscuits express post - something I have never done before. I'm sure by the time I get around to reading the replies on this post (lockdown can get surprisingly busy) they would have arrived, fingers crossed!

Now, onto making marmalade....

Lol, whenever I ask my mom to cook something for me that takes huge time and energy, she would often say, I won't. You have to eat what's cooked.

And then after a few minutes, she goes on and cook it😂

Moms are amazing that way. And LOL I also find myself doing it. 😆

True😀

Oh, haha that's exactly what's going on! Love it. Your Mum must love you xx

She does😇

Oh my gosh!

These look yummy and crispy.

Shut yer face!

Where's mine?

Hahaha!!! I don't think they let them over the border... 😂😂😂

Gosh - I've been away too long. That's appalling. 😆

Hahahah!!!!!!

🤣🤣🤣 complete with ants??

Brilliant idea. This creates a wonderful way to keep in touch and strengthen bonds over distances.

Last lockdown I ordered them a box of food from the supermarket - dark chocolate, vegan mango icecream, you know the thing. They were thrilled. The best thing is that they NEVER expect it and are ALWAYS suprised.

Wonderful! I sent my parents a box of locally produced meat from their province, and it was like Christmas in the Summer for them.

Making marmalade after word, interesting.

I guess they would live your biscuits because first, it was a surprise package and second, you made it with love.

And when you do it even though you hate it - that's levelling up on the act of kindness ;D

And for someone who hates it, looking good

I think they'll appreciate it all the more - it'll be such a suprise!

This is so nice of you! Sometimes we have to do things not to please ourselves but to please others. It's not easy and we have to step out of our comfort zone but at the same time, it is required to spread kindness and happiness amongst our loved ones. Proud act!

Thankyou - you'll be cooking up storms for your kids over the years, for sure - its' a way of showing LOVE, love, love!

That's a really sweet idea! Should make lockdown a little more enjoyable <3
And those biscuits look great! I think I never had ginger biscuits.

Oh wow you've never had ginger biscuits? They are very addictive!!!

Very cool! Love the flowers on top.

I sprinkle calendula on absolutely everything :P

Oh my Sweet Baking Goddess - really enjoyed that. 😆 I've also never, ever sent baked goods through the post office - suddenly have a vision of a Thai postal worker on a rusty bicycle marauded by an army of ANTS and yelling, "wtf?!"

It IS nice to pause and find new ways to express our love... it matters. x Suddenly I'm itching to make traditional Dutch spice cookies - Spekulaas. YUMMMMM!!! Exploration online required....

Oh yum, I bet your spekulaas are nicer than the Aldi ones (which I love).

Hahah - that image made me laugh! Especially as I was madly cleaning up marmalade from the benches so the ants wouldn't raid me!!!

Ants are the Buddha's gift to teach STILLNESS of mind. I only have to SEE one sitting on the duvet and I IMAGINE then all over my bed, devouring me. LOL... perhaps they're the ultimate manifestation of the monkey mind??

This looks amazing!
Cute story.

I hope you love to hate to bake for me some day ;<)
xx

Guaranteed I won't - I hate baking!

And I 'love' your honesty and still hope to taste your 'cooking' one day ;<)

also, as a fellow ( sensitive ) Libra, I can relate to struggling with the mess that baking usually makes, especially when it involves flour / dough .

Guau they look delicious, you shoud make more cooking.

No, I only bake about twice a year!

What delicious cookies! They look gorgeous with those petals. The mixture of ginger and orange always goes well. They must be very tasty and good to drink with tea or juice. A good version that you offer us of these cookies. Good to see you around Foodies Bee Hive. Greetings.

Well, you did a good job, for someone who doesn't like to do it. And you are even able to make changes to the recommended recipes, so everything is not so bad. For example, the last time I tried to make a cake for my wife, according to a recipe from the Internet, I spent 5 hours on it. There were quite a lot of mistakes on my part, I divided the oil into water and fat several times, when I made the cream, I whipped it too hard...After all, I'm a strong man :) I pretended to believe my wife when she said that it was delicious. She pretended to believe that I believed her...
