The Bistek Tagalog (Filipino Beef Steak) | One of My Favorite Childhood Dish

Eating the Bistek Tagalog or Filipino Beef Steak always reminds me of a wonderful memory in my childhood where my mother cooked it and tasted it the first time. Remembering it brings me a loving and warm feeling. I recall we were all gathered on the table for dinner while getting excited for our mother's cooking. It was a very delicious meal, the meat was very tender and our mother used lots of butter to fry the meat making the meat and the little soy sauce soup taste super great.

Two days ago, she brought beef tenderloin and cooked it last night into Bistek. She often told me that the tenderloin part is the softest meat of a cow and the perfect part to use for the dish Bistek. This meat often gets sold fast so we don't always get the chance to buy it, that is why she is lucky to purchase some this time.

Bistek Tagalog is the Filipino version of the Beef Steak. It is marinated beef meat in soy sauce, spices, mixed with some white onions. A classic Filipino dish which is easy to find as it is also served on canteens/eateries on the streets. I assisted my mother cooking the Bistek last night so I thought I might as well share it with you how it is cooked.


INGREDIENTS
▫️1 Kilo Tenderloin Beef
▫️2 White Onions
▫️10 Pcs. Lime (Calamansi)
▫️1 Tsp. Ground Black Pepper
▫️1 Cup Soy Sauce
▫️1 Tsp Knorr Liquid Seasoning
▫️Coconut Oil




PROCEDURE




#1 Slice the tendorloin beef thinly and chop white onions.


#2 In a bowl, mix the beef with soy sauce, ground black pepper, Knorr liquid seasoning and squeeze in the limes. Put white onions on top. Put it in the refridgerator and have it marinate overnight.

#3 Assuming you have already marinated the meat overnight. Pour enough coconut oil in a pan and fry beef meat. Do not put the onions yet while frying.

#4 When the meat turns slightly brown, put the remaining sauce and onion.

#5 Boil until the sauce thickens and onion becomes tender. Serve with rice and enjoy!

We only cooked half of the meat but you can always cooked the whole kilo of marinated beef meat all at once, of course! We're only three eating it so we didn't cook everything.

As for the soy sauce soup you can see on the photos above, we didn't add water in it, it was purely the soy sauce, the other liquid spices, and the meat juice which emerged when it was fried. However, most of the sauce gets absorbed back by meat as it is continued to be cooked. (See the very first photo of this post.)

The Bistek Tagalog dish taste best when eaten with rice. It has simple ingredients and also very easy to cook.

If there is anything I love in my food, its beef or just beef in it self. I like that y'all use soy sauce in the cooking process. This looks really good.
