Hi everyone! Today I am going to share some pictures on how my mother and I made murukku for this year's Diwali festival. It is a festival of lights where we celebrate the triumph of good over evil. It is in a few days and we are very busy making cookies and cleaning. We won't be able to travel anywhere due to the Covid-19 pandemic but we are going to make the best out of what we have.

Ingredients

  • Murukku flour
  • Ajwain
  • Water

Tools

Dough Preparation

Traditionally, people will mix their own dough using urad dhal flour but now we use ready made murukku flour. By the way, urad dhal is a type of lentil. Different brands result in slightly varying texture of murukkus. We use Alagappas as we like it best and I also find it to be softer compared to the others.

My mom added some ajwain (omam) to the murukku flour. Ajwain is added to aid digestion.

Add some water to mix them and make a dough. You can also add some oil if you would like it to be softer. Make it into a dough like this.

Make them into little parts like this so that they can be conveniently put into the murukku squeezing tools.

Murukku shaping

This is how it is done. All we have to do is put the dough inside the tool and squeeze and shape it into a spiral pattern.

This is how it looks when it is done.

I did most of them while my mom was frying them. I made a little star with the leftover dough.

Murukku Frying

The frying of murukku involves deep frying. Hence, we need plenty of oil. Turn the fire on and let the oil heat.

Then, start frying the murukku shaped doughs. This was the last round of the last round of frying which is why you can see my little star in the wok too.

When the murukkus turn a little brownish and become harder, use a ladle that can strain excessive oil out to get the murukkus out.

The yummy murukkus are ready. It is best to put them on some paper like this so that any leftover oil on the murukkus can be absorbed.

By the way, I made the ones looking round and have a certain pattern. So, once the murukkus have cooled, store them in a airtight container.

This is another star murukku that I made :D

I guess this year's Diwali will be mostly focused on being home and safe so the least we can do is have some yummy food. Thank you for dropping by and have a great day ahead!

I have never had this before, but this looks so delicious! I really need to make this. Thanks for the recipe.

Thank you! I suggest trying to get a ready made powder just like this otherwise you may have to make it yourself =)

Thanks for the tip! I sometimes want to "home make" everything from scratch.

Wow! These look absolutely delicious. Here in Suriname the Indian diaspora and many many Surinamers of no Indian ancestry are gearing up for Diwali too.

Thank you! I never knew that there are communities over there who celebrate Diwali too unless they have Indian ancestry. It is interesting to know how a festival unites us! I will definitely check the links out. Thanks for sharing them.
