Today I found out that I have to fly to Amsterdam again next week. I was there last week and somehow I have to go back. I've already been there four times this year, which is a new record for me. I've also been to the US three times, for the first time in 30 years, and I think I'll be going there more often in the next few years. Of course, my trips to Japan will be fewer, although I only traveled there once a year. Soon I have to go to China, to Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. But I'll leave my personal cell phone and laptop at home.
In recent years, I have noticed that although it has become easier to travel, conditions have deteriorated. Regular flights are the low-cost version of what they were 20 years ago. Trains, planes, buses, and subways have become significantly dirtier, maintenance has suffered, and everything has become more expensive. And yes, service has deteriorated almost everywhere in the world. Everything has its positive and negative aspects. I am rather conservative in this regard and pay attention to cleanliness, good service, and quality. I can understand the fast-food mentality, but I don't want to adopt it. A good example of why I love old European buildings is the quality, artistry, and aesthetics they offer. The houses from the Wilhelminian era were built to last forever, and aesthetics were not ignored either. Somehow I miss this attitude that you only have one life and you shouldn't treat it cheaply, from the place where you live to the clothes you wear, the food you eat and the way you travel. What do you think?

Heute habe ich erfahren, dass ich nächste Woche wieder nach Amsterdam fliegen soll. Ich war letzte Woche dort und irgendwie muss ich wieder hin. Dieses Jahr war ich schon vier Mal dort, was einen neuen Rekord für mich darstellt. Ich war auch drei Mal in den USA, nach 30 Jahren wieder, und denke, dass es in den nächsten Jahren häufiger werden wird. Klar, meine Reisen nach Japan werden weniger, wobei ich nur einmal im Jahr dorthin gereist bin. Demnächst muss ich nach China, nach Shenzhen, Shanghai und Hongkong. Da werde ich mein persönliches Handy und Laptop aber zu Hause lassen.
In den letzten Jahren ist mir aufgefallen, dass es zwar leichter geworden ist zu reisen, sich die Konditionen aber verschlechtert haben. Normale Flüge sind die billige Version von vor 20 Jahren. Züge, Flugzeuge, Busse und U-Bahnen sind deutlich dreckiger geworden, die Instandhaltung leidet und alles ist teurer geworden. Und ja, der Service ist fast überall auf der Welt schlechter geworden. Alles hat seine positiven und negativen Facetten. Ich bin in dieser Hinsicht eher konservativ und achte auf Sauberkeit, guten Service und Qualität. Die Fast-Food-Mentalität kann ich verstehen, aber ich möchte sie mir nicht aneignen. Ein gutes Beispiel, warum ich den europäischen Altbau liebe, ist die Qualität, die Kunst und die Ästhetik, die er mit sich bringt. Die Häuser aus der Gründerzeit wurden so gebaut, dass sie ewig halten, und man hat auch die Ästhetik nicht ignoriert. Irgendwie vermisse ich diese Einstellung, dass man nur ein Leben hat und man sollte es nicht billig behandeln, von dem Ort, an dem man lebt, bis zur Kleidung, dem Essen und dem Reisen. Wie seht ihr das?
