Johnny 5 is alive!!
Los Locos kick your ass, los locos kick your face, los locos kick your balls into outer spaaace! I think this was my only takeaway from this film when I was a kid watching this. I mean this was the highlight of the entire movie for me. It was actually that scene that inspired me to write about Johnny 5. I mean, who doesn't remember that scene right? Especially if you're a kid and allowed to watch that part.
Anyway, this is another olden golden ones, although perhaps written for children but can be enjoyed by adults alike for the childlike naivety of the Johnny 5. I mean, essentially he is that since he doesn't know anything about the wide world and has been locked up by his friends away from sight.
To put it into context. Johnny 5, in the first Short Circuit movie was a defective robot created by the military. Essentially, he didn't see the point in why he should do what he was programmed to do and decided to venture off into the wide world. That's where he met his friend Stephanie who helped him turn into Johnny 5.
This film is now set in New York, and Ben is a struggling toy maker. He was kicked out of the robot program after the army took over the project for building Johnny 5 and turned him into an instrument of doom. Sadly, that made him unemployed and now he's making toys for a living, which of course they are small replicas of Johnny 5.
But, Ben's luck is about to change. One of his toys mistakenly runs away from him and trots off into the department store, all the way into a meeting with the department heads. Excited by what he sees, the boss asks one of his assistants to go out and find whoever made this toy and make him an offer, to which Bens friend reluctantly agrees for him, and puts them way over their heads with an order of 20,000.
Just as they are setting up their warehouse a nearby dirty duo are tunneling into the neighbouring bank to get the big diamonds that are stored away in the prize vault for safekeeping. They see the newcomers venture in and get real upset. So they stage a violent protest and smash all of Ben's creations.
That's when he receives an unknown delivery and wahay! It's Johnny 5, in from the town right into the heart of the city and Ben can't be more pleased to see him because he's here to help him with his manufacturing dilemma, which will save him in many ways. Johnny 5 just wants to be treated like a human being.
That's when we start to see the capabalities of Johnny 5, when he assembles the toys in minutes and reads The Hounds of The Baskervilles in less than 30 seconds. Their time (and money) are quite literally saved.
But of course, it all doesn't go smoothly as the team wrestle with some nasty neighbours and Johnny 5 discovers that he's in a city, but I'll let you discover the rest on your own because it really is a diamond watch.
It's a comedy if you didn't know, because it really is quite funny. I need to watch this one again because it's been so long since I've sat down and gave it a play.
A definite good watch. I should start talking about films I didn't like here soon!
