I remember that my mother or my aunts used to take me to a movie theater called Lido, very close to the Chacaito area in the city of Caracas, where I smelled something similar to popcorn with soft drinks and when the movie started there was a smell like plastic.
The particularity of that movie theater was that every weekend at matinee they showed Disney movies, they were re-releases.
When I was about six years old, they took me to see the Dumbo movie, which was a very funny little elephant with a very special feature: his big ears.
At that time I did not really perceive the concepts of cruelty, humiliation, bullying or racism very well. All this happened in the movie, being the trigger of all this situation a difference, an imperfection that the poor little animal possessed. Seeing on screen how the animal was physically and psychologically mistreated caused me much sadness and indignation, the other elephants made fun of him, the clowns mistreated him physically, why did my mother bring me here to see it? I think this was the first approach I had to a terrible behavior that is very current nowadays: bullying.

So far my suffering, the elephant meets a gang of crows which, along with Timoteo are the only ones who help Dumbo throughout the film, they make him understand that he is special precisely because of what makes him different from other elephants: his ears. Dumbo manages to accept himself as he is and to take advantage of that defect: he can fly thanks to his big ears, finally the movie can make me laugh with the change of situations that happen next.

Dumbo didn't speak during the whole movie, but by seeing his face you could already empathize with his emotions, see his purity of heart. It is a movie that only lasts 64 minutes, bittersweet, but it brings as a moral that we must be tolerant with others because, although we are different we deserve a good treatment, it gives us to understand that success depends on each one of us and that many times, that defect that distresses us can be an ally.
Many of these things I learned over time thanks to the values that were instilled in me in my family, adding that the images of the film always haunted my mind.
As an adult, I understood that reading the film has much deeper implications, including Salvador Dalí, and even racism, but I will leave that for a future publication.

Recuerdo que mi madre o mis tías me llevaban a un cine llamado Lido, muy cerca de la zona de Chacaito en la ciudad de Caracas, donde olía algo parecido a palomitas de maíz con refrescos y cuando empezaba la película había un olor como a plástico.
La particularidad de ese cine era que todos los fines de semana en la matiné pasaban películas de Disney, eran reestrenos.
Cuando tenía unos seis años me llevaron a ver la película de Dumbo, que era un elefantito muy gracioso con una característica muy especial: sus grandes orejas.
En aquella época no percibía muy bien los conceptos de crueldad, humillación, acoso o racismo. Todo esto sucedía en la película, siendo el detonante de toda esta situación una diferencia, una imperfección que poseía el pobre animalito. Ver en la pantalla como el animal era maltratado física y psicológicamente me causó mucha tristeza e indignación, los otros elefantes se burlaban de él, los payasos lo maltrataban físicamente, ¿por qué me trajo mi madre a verlo? Creo que este fue el primer acercamiento que tuve a un comportamiento terrible y muy actual hoy en día: el bullying.

Hasta aquí mi sufrimiento, el elefante se encuentra con una pandilla de cuervos que, junto con Timoteo son los únicos que ayudan a Dumbo en toda la película, le hacen entender que es especial precisamente por lo que le hace diferente a los demás elefantes: sus orejas. Dumbo consigue aceptarse como es y sacar provecho de ese defecto: puede volar gracias a sus grandes orejas, finalmente la película consigue hacerme reír con el cambio de situaciones que se producen a continuación.

Dumbo no habló durante toda la película, pero al ver su cara ya podías empatizar con sus emociones, ver su pureza de corazón. Es una película que sólo dura 64 minutos, agridulce, pero que trae como moraleja que debemos ser tolerantes con los demás porque, aunque seamos diferentes merecemos un buen trato, nos da a entender que el éxito depende de cada uno de nosotros y que muchas veces, ese defecto que nos angustia puede ser un aliado.
Muchas de estas cosas las aprendí con el tiempo gracias a los valores que me inculcaron en mi familia, añadiendo que las imágenes de la película siempre rondaron mi mente.
De adulto, comprendí que la lectura de la película tiene implicaciones mucho más profundas, incluyendo a Salvador Dalí, e incluso el racismo, pero eso lo dejaré para una futura publicación.

I tell you that although it seems strange at that age I was already attracted to horror movies, I would sneak into the living room and turn on the black and white TV, until at midnight my mother scolded me and sent me to bed to sleep. Perhaps this fact made me a little immune to the terror so palpable in the scene of the pink elephants. Greetings
Sabes que está película tiene una de las escenas que más me gusta en un film animado con unos grandes personajes, hablo de los cuervos y el tema que cantan cuando Dumbo vuela por segunda vez y que por primera vez podemos verlo, Cuervos que cantan como andaluces y hablan como cubanos, creo que justamente esa versión creo que ha sido censurada y es lamentable, es muy buena canción.
En la version original estos cuervos representan la segregacion racial en los Estados Unidos, y ademas fuman, pienso que los artistas dibujantes en ese momento quisieron mostrar a los cuervos como una parte de la población que era apartada por ser diferente a los ciudadanos blancos. Como dato curiosos te comento que si has visto las caricaturas de Pixie, Dixie y el gato Jinks notaras que la voz del gato es la misma que la del cuervo andaluz en Dumbo!. Es el mismo artista doblador. Gracias por comentar amigo.
