Buddy (Jude Hill), the child protagonist, plays in the street as a knight fighting a dragon with a shield that is actually a dumpster lid and a wooden sword. On his way home he finds himself in the middle of a street fight in his neighborhood between Catholics and Protestants. Suddenly, is saved by his mother, Ma (Caitriona Balfe).

The 60's are coming to an end, the arrival of man on the moon is questioned, the community in which he lives is losing its stability, given the social unrest created by a conflict between Catholics and Protestants, and suddenly your neighbors can become your enemies.
This nine-year-old boy tries to understand this chaotic and hysterical situation that threatens to corrupt everything he knows in a confrontation in his own environment.
His mother does her best to cope with the situation while his father works away from home in England. There are city patrols and innocent lives are threatened. Buddy is a fan of westerns like High Noon and The Man Who Killed Liberty Balance. He goes to the movies and is amazed by Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and A Million Years B.C.
Pa (Jamie Dornan), is an absent figure, but at the right time he manages to confront whoever frightens his family and if necessary he will use violence, as seen in the movies that entertain Buddy so much, Despite his absence he is an idol for his son.
Buddy has constant conversations with his grandparents about life, love and his fears. The grandparents of the protagonist of the story are none other than Ciarán Hinds (Rome and Game of Thrones series) and Judi Dench, who play ironic and endearing characters that empathize with the little actor.
The boy must cope with the loss of his grandfather who according to tradition is bid farewell to this world in a festive manner, and at his funeral his son in a key scene of the film sings Everlasting Love.

Ma (Caitriona Balfe), at first refuses to leave her home, but comes to her senses given a serious incident involving Buddy: he, under the influence of his cousin, is part of a looting, stealing a washing soap from a supermarket, the mother realizing the situation, takes the son to return it and they suddenly find themselves immersed in the senseless brutality of this fight that takes place in Belfast.

In this riot Buddy and his mother are threatened by Billy, an old friend of Pa's who is bent on making him part of the Protestant agitators, the father manages to disarm Billy before he is arrested, but the family knows they are no longer safe there and decide to leave for England. Buddy says goodbye to his grandmother and his sweetheart Catherine before joining his family to move.
The film is nominated for seven 2021 Oscars: best picture, best director, best original song, best supporting actor, (Ciaran Hinds), best supporting actress (Judi Dench), best sound, and best original screenplay.
The boy Jude Hill demonstrates a natural talent in front of the cameras, being this the most important character of the film as we are watching it through his eyes, a portentous performance.
Kenneth Branagh, actor and director manages to shoot this film in black and white showing powerful images that contrast with the childish fantasy, reinforced by the excellent soundtrack by Van Morrison. It is like a semi-biography of the actor-filmmaker, narrated with great taste, full of cinematic winks. It is a tribute to home, family and the experiences of a child in a very dangerous area full of religious and social conflicts.

Buddy mantiene constantes conversaciones con sus abuelos sobre la vida, el amor y sus miedos. Los abuelos del protagonista de la historia son nada menos que Ciarán Hinds (Roma y la serie Juego de Tronos) y Judi Dench, que interpretan personajes irónicos y entrañables que empatizan con el pequeño actor.
El niño debe enfrentarse a la pérdida de su abuelo que, según la tradición, se despide de este mundo de forma festiva, y en su funeral su hijo, en una escena clave de la película, canta Everlasting Love.

La película está nominada a siete Oscars 2021: mejor película, mejor director, mejor canción original, mejor actor de reparto (Ciaran Hinds), mejor actriz de reparto (Judi Dench), mejor sonido y mejor guión original.
El niño Jude Hill demuestra un talento natural delante de las cámaras, siendo este el personaje más importante de la película ya que la vemos a través de sus ojos, una actuación portentosa.
Kenneth Branagh, actor y director consigue rodar esta película en blanco y negro mostrando imágenes potentes que contrastan con la fantasía infantil, reforzada por la excelente banda sonora de Van Morrison. Es como una semibiografía del actor-cineasta, narrada con mucho gusto, llena de guiños cinematográficos. Es un homenaje al hogar, a la familia y a las vivencias de un niño en una zona muy peligrosa y llena de conflictos religiosos y sociales.
