Ernest Plays Chess! (Review)

in CineTV2 years ago (edited)
I am totally kidding about that whole title, but it does nicely sum up the post in a strange and satisfying way. I could've just as cheekily called it "Ernest Gets an Amazon Package"... but it just doesn't have the same ring to it. You know?

You may have guessed by now, but I got a few things in the mail recently that make me very happy!

As much as I hate the business wasteland that Amazon is creating... I just can't stop finding things to buy. Obscure things. Nostalgic things. Practical, necessary things. They really do have me by the balls.

Ernest Movies. What?!

Case in point... where else are you going to find an ERNEST MOVIE COLLECTION with three of his top-tier flicks? Seriously. And I already grabbed ERNEST SAVES CHRISTMAS from there late last year... so Amazon is kicking some legitimate ass.

If there is anyone reading this right now who hasn't ever seen an Ernest P. Worrell movie... add it to your to-do list and get it done! Or at least watch one of them and decide if it's something you can appreciate.

The ones I've listed here are the ones I recommend... there were a few that came later which are considered the B-roll. The most popular was probably Ernest Goes to Camp, but my personal favourite is Ernest Scared Stupid (a Halloween movie which retains its quirky production value to this day).

Jim Varney (the actor) was a comic genius, in my opinion, and he gave this character such a warm and affable nature that you can't help but love him... even if he drives you up the wall.

Ernest Goes to the Afterlife. 😞

His death from cancer years ago saddened me deeply. And now his work seems to slowly be getting lost in the (streaming) sands of time. Things are moving and changing too quickly, people's attention drawn in too many directions...

But I have personally been collecting these classics from my childhood to share with my daughter. A few others include the Look Who's Talking trilogy and Honey I Shrunk the Kids (and Ourselves).

Ernest Didn't Play Chess.

As far as I know... it would've made for some curious #cinema. But it was the best way of tying my Amazon purchases together.

I mentioned in my last post that I've been getting into #chess. It's something my daughter-- @sydney.potts-- has wanted to play in the past and I just never had any interest. And then BOOM: it's becoming a part of me, and I can't really tell you why.

We have a chess board which is part of a multi-game box thingy... the pieces are small and the board itself is missing the square notations. So I knew that we would need a better setup for playing.

Decent Chess Board... Check.

I'm getting good at these cheesy puns. 😋

It's nothing too fancy, but the pieces are large and made of real wood. The board is a folding wood-faced deal with elastic straps to hold all the pieces secure on the inside. And it came with two extra queens for pawn promotion.

The price for me was around $50 CAD, and I think it will fit the bill nicely. You can click the picture (or RIGHT HERE) to see it for yourself. It will take you to one of FIVE Amazon sites-- US, Canada, UK, Italy or India... whichever is closest to your location. You may get a better price.

Chess Is Cool, Damn It!

I guess it never occurred to me that there is such a GIGANTIC community of chess players, enthusiasts and groupies all over the world. It reminds me of Star Trek... or darts.

And as I pointed out in my LAST POST, there is already a home for us here on Hive. With almost 650 members to date, THE CHESS COMMUNITY is thriving. Make sure you subscribe if it's your thing, and register for their BLOCKCHAIN CHESS TEAM on Lichess so you can get involved!

I should shut up now though... Sheesh! Give a shout-out in the comments if you're a chess fan, an Ernest fan or a nostalgic film purist. Thanks so much for reading! Peace out for now. ✌️

It's really sweet that you are getting those old classics to share with your daughter, my husband love the honey I shrunk series and I'm sure your daughter will appreciate a lot the movies you are collecting.

I was also surprised to see how popular chess still is, and the queen's gambit sure helped giving a bump in popularity XD

!1UP

Yes indeed! I really enjoyed The Queen's Gambit, and there's another chess-focused movie with Cuba Gooding Jr. that I recently saw. There's something about chess that's almost romantic.

Thank you for taking the time to comment, and for your kind words. Sydney has been loving the old flicks I put on, and I think it's making her a much more interesting and well-rounded person. (One can hope.) lol
