Believe or not believe? That is the dilemma in which many of us find ourselves. The modern world teaches us to be more independent from any religious sphere, often destroying the beliefs of many with solid arguments, however sometimes there are things that are inexplicable even today, things that get out of hand and that can be taken by many as an inescapable part of the existence of God and his counterpart the devil.
The plot of this film has been explored thousands of times after the release of The Exorcist in the 70s, a success that is unrepeatable and incomparable no matter how many try. In the rite, the formula changes only a little and that is that the one who requires an exorcism is a priest but let's not go that far yet.
¿Creer o no creer? Esa es la disyuntiva en que muchos nos encontramos. El mundo moderno nos enseña a ser más independientes de cualquier ámbito religioso, muchas veces destruyendo con sólidos argumentos las creencias de muchos sin embargo a veces hay cosas que son inexplicables aún hoy en día, cosas que se nos salen de las manos y que pueden ser tomadas por muchos como parte ineludible de la existencia de Dios y de su contraparte el demonio.
El argumento de esta película se ha explorado miles de veces tras la salida de El exorcista en los años 70, un éxito que es irrepetible e incomparable por más que muchos lo intenten. En el rito, la formula cambia solo un poco y es que el que requiere de un exorcismo es un cura pero no vayamos tan lejos todavía.
Mikael Kovac is a young seminarian who is about to decline in terms of his religion, doubts and skepticism invade him but before retiring he is forced to attend a course on exorcisms and demons. In this course he confronts on a couple of occasions with the father who teaches this subject and the discussions between theology and science fight each other.
Mikael Kovac es un joven seminarista que está a punto de declinar en cuanto a su religión, las dudas y el escepticismo lo invaden pero antes de retirarse se ve obligado a asistir a un curso sobre exorcismos y demonios. En este curso se enfrenta en un par de ocasiones con el padre que dicta esta materia y las discusiones entre teología y ciencia luchan entre sí.
Then Kovac meets another father who has experience with many cases of exorcism and this was a good opportunity for him to permanently get rid of any religious traits he may have when facing a fraud face to face. Father Lucas had been handling many exorcisms in his life and at that moment when Kovac came to meet him, one of them was that of a pregnant girl who was raped by her father.
With the psychiatric knowledge we have today it is easier to deduce that the girl has a severe trauma and developed a psychotic disorder but more evidence comes to Kovac, the demonic voice of the girl, the sleight of hand and the expulsion of nails by his mouth are some examples, however Kovac is still not convinced and remains skeptical although impressed.
Luego Kovac conoce a otro padre que tiene una experiencia con muchos casos de exorcismo y esta era una buena oportunidad para el de deshacerse definitivamente de cualquier rasgo religioso que pudiese tener al enfrentar cara a cara a un fraude. El padre Lucas había estado encargándose de muchos exorcismos en su vida y en ese momento cuando Kovac llega a su encuentro, uno de ellos era el de una chica embarazada que fue violada por su padre.
Con el conocimiento psiquiátrico que poseemos hoy en día es más fácil deducir de que la chica tiene un trauma severo y desarrollo un trastorno psicótico pero más pruebas le llegan a Kovac, la voz demoniaca de la chica, la prestidigitación y la expulsión de unos clavos por su boca son algunos ejemplos, sin embargo Kovac aún no termina de convencerse y permanece escéptico aunque impresionado.
Unfortunately, the girl dies from an internal hemorrhage and the depression that Father Lucas has makes it easier for the demon to take care of him. Here begins the true action of this feature film and the true struggle that Kovac has between his skepticism and religion.
This internal struggle is well presented in the film and is one of the most interesting aspects of the film, you can say that the rest of the film is a mere copy of the exorcist formula but Anthony Hopkins did an excellent job as a priest. as a demon which is quite admirable that yes without reaching as much impact as the work of Linda Blair.
La chica lamentablemente muere por una hemorragia interna y la depresión que tiene el padre Lucas hace que el demonio se pueda encargar más fácil de él. Aquí empieza la verdadera acción de este largometraje y la verdadera lucha que tiene Kovac entre su escepticismo y la religión.
Esta lucha interna es bien presentada en la película y es uno de los aspectos más interesantes que tiene el film, puede decir que el resto de la película es una mera copia de la fórmula de El exorcista pero Anthony Hopkins hizo un excelente trabajo tanto como cura como demonio lo que es bastante admirable eso sí sin llegar a impactarme tanto como el trabajo de Linda Blair.
Here, as I said, the interesting thing is skepticism versus faith. Obviously it is more than predictable what happens in the end but I must also clarify that the film is based on certain real events which gives it some extra points.
The story is based on an investigation by journalist Matt Baglio about a priest in California who had several exorcisms to his credit and attends a seminar at the Vatican. The investigation leads Matt Baglio to witness and be a direct witness to events considered paranormal today. Personally, I have not read the book but it would be interesting to read it after finishing the film.
Aquí como dije lo interesante es el escepticismo versus la fe. Obviamente es más que predecible lo que sucede al final pero debo aclarar también que la película está basada en ciertos hechos reales lo que le da unos puntos extra.
La historia está basada en la investigación que hizo el periodista Matt Baglio sobre un sacerdote en California que tenía en su haber varios exorcismos y acude a un seminario en el Vaticano. La investigación lleva a Matt Baglio a presenciar y ser testigo directo de hechos considerados paranormales hoy en día. Personalmente no he leído el libro pero vaya que sería interesante leerlo tras finalizar la película.
The film itself does not contribute anything new, perhaps only that a priest is exorcised but even these scenes many of us have seen repeatedly on the big screen. The fact that it is based on real events gives it some extra points but this is a typical resource of many films like that, such as The Conjuring and even The Exorcist itself, so it is not that it has too much validity.
The film presents this to us with a very serious atmosphere, it does not pretend to be just a film to scare us but to leave a message between the lines about faith but it fails to convey terror or something definitely shocking. It's a good story, with a good message and a more than respected actor that overshadows everything else.
La película en si no aporta nada nuevo, quizás solo que un cura es exorcizado pero incluso estas escenas ya muchos de nosotros las hemos visto repetidas veces en la gran pantalla. El hecho de que esté basada en hechos reales le da unos puntos extras pero este es un recurso típico de muchas películas así, como el Conjuro y hasta el mismo El exorcista así que tampoco es que tenga demasiada validez.
La película nos presenta esto con una atmosfera bastante seria, no pretende ser solo una película para darnos terror sino dejar un mensaje entre líneas acerca de la fe pero no logra transmitirnos un terror o algo definitivamente impactante. Es una buena historia, con un buen mensaje y un más que respetado actor que opaca a todo lo demás.
